BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a frequent head and neck cancer in southern China and Southeast Asia. The majority of NPC patients are managed by radiation oncologists, medical oncologists and head and neck surgeons. Actually, neurosurgical interventions are warranted under specific circumstances. In this article, we described our experience as neurosurgeons in the management of NPC patients.
METHODS: Medical records of NPC patients who received neurosurgical procedure at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center were reviewed.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a unique cancer. Refinement of current therapy by discovering potential drugs may be approached by several computational strategies.
METHODS: We collected NPC genes from published microarray data and the literature. The NPC disease network was constructed via a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. The Connectivity Map (CMap) was used to predict potential chemicals, and support vector machines (SVMs) were further utilized to classify the effectiveness of tested drugs against NPC using their gene expression from CMap.

Nasopharyngeal necrosis resulting from narcotic insufflation is a recognized phenomenon, but cocaine use is more commonly associated with this pathology than opioid abuse. Physical exam findings associated with severe tissue destruction are not routinely seen on physical examination or available in the medical literature. BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the clinical features of NPC presenting with headache as the primary or sole symptom.
METHODS: The authors retrospectively identified 14 cases of NPC with headache as the initial presentation between 2003 and 2008. Headache characteristics, tumor staging, and treatment outcomes were assessed.

OBJECTIVE: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma may be successfully resected using endoscopic techniques. However, the use of coblation technology for such resection has not been described. This study aimed to document cases of Fisch class I juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma with limited nasopharyngeal and nasal cavity extension, which were completely resected using an endoscopic coblation technique.

Summary The pneumococcal cell surface protein PavA is a virulence factor associated with adherence and invasion in vitro. In this study we show in vivo that PavA is necessary for Streptococcus pneumoniae D39 colonization of the murine upper respiratory tract in a long-term carriage model, with PavA-deficient pneumococci being quickly cleared from nasopharyngeal tissue.
