The multiple cancers (MC) phenotype represents an intriguing entity from both the clinical and the biomolecular points of view. Multiple cancers can arise in a patient either synchronously or metachronously and are frequently detected in hereditary disorders. Here we report the clinical and cytogenetic characterization of 48 patients developing at least three malignancies outside the context of a known genetic condition and 30 control individuals. Medical and pathology reports were registered, blood was collected for cytogenetic studies, and the standard G-banding technique was used for chromo

Primary tumors of the spine are relatively infrequent lesions compared with metastatic disease, multiple myeloma, and lymphoma which are the more frequent neoplasms of the spine and usually manifest with multifocal lesions and thus pose little diagnostic dilemma. However, in the presence of a solitary spinal lesion, the more uncommon primary tumors of the spine represent an important group of entities for diagnostic consideration. The most common benign and malignant primary tumors of the spine are enostosis, osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma, giant cell tumor, aneurysmal bone cyst, osteochondrom

BACKGROUND: Multiple myeloma is a plasmatic cell neoplasm that is characterized by skeletal destruction, renal failure, anemia and hypercalcemia. The skull plasmacytomas represent less than 1% of the head and neck tumors, they can be the primary lesion or occur as a secondary manifestation of multiple myeloma in 20-30% of the patients, or they can even manifest several years later after the diagnosis of plasmacytoma. Although some of the lesions may be surgically accessible, the aggressive natural behavior will complicate the evolution of the patients. We present two cases of Mexican women wit

A 62-year-old Japanese man who presented with penile carcinoma is reported. The initial exophytic neoplasm excised from the coronal sulcus and prepuce on the abdominal side of the penis was diagnosed histologically as verrucous carcinoma. Twenty-six months after the primary operation, an epithelial neoplasm recurred within the scar of the primary operation. The neoplasm histologically showed verrucous carcinoma and multiple invasive foci of conventional squamous cell carcinoma in the advancing edge of the tumor, as such representing a hybrid verrucous-squamous carcinoma. A lymph node metastasi

BACKGROUND: This study attempted to reveal the incidence and risk of synchronous and metachronous esophageal cancer in subjects with oral, oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer based on a population-wide database in Taiwan.
METHODS: We retrieved data for this cross-sectional study from the Taiwanese Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000. The study group included 2,965 subjects who had received their first-time diagnosis of oral/oropharyngeal/hypopharyngeal cancer in 2002∼2009. We assigned the date of their first diagnosis of oral/oropharyngeal/hypopharyngeal cancer as the index date.

BACKGROUND: New treatment strategies for prostate cancer have recently been developed, but multiple malignancies remain a major concern. The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of multiple malignancies and to analyze the risk of secondary malignancies after radiotherapy for prostate cancer.
METHODS: From 2000 to 2011, 150 patients with prostate cancer were treated with curative radiotherapy in our department. Patient age range was 54-92 years (median, 70 years), and the follow-up period was 4-142 months (median, 48 months). The incidence of multiple primary cancers was compa

We reviewed 82 patients with 83 upper urinary tract tumors and investigated those who had associated bladder tumors. Of these patients, 7 (9%) had previous bladder tumors, 14 (17%) had concurrent bladder tumors, and 18 (22%) subsequently developed bladder tumors. As 1 patient subsequently developed a bladder and a upper urinary tract tumor at different times, 38 patients (46%) had associated bladder tumors. The time interval between the occurrence of a previous bladder tumor and the subsequent upper urinary tract tumor was 11 to 144 months (mean: 41 months), while that between an upper urinary

AIM OF THE STUDY: Multiple ring-enhancing lesions are commonly experienced group of brain pathologies which we come across in day-to-day practice. Clinical symptoms in these lesions are quite non-specific, and hence, it is difficult to reach a final diagnosis. However, these lesions have a varied group of differential diagnosis and it is sometimes difficult to have an accurate diagnosis on conventional MRI. This article was written with the objective of discussing the demographical study and etiology, clinical diagnosis and management for these patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: It is a prospec

Secondary neoplastic localisations observed in oesophageal epidermoid carcinoma are essentially in the upper oesophagogastric tract, in particular the hypopharynx, the oropharynx and the buccal cavity. The associated morbidity of the mucous membrane of the upper oesophagogastric tract and that of the oesophagus, with regard to the risk of developing epidermoid carcinoma, is linked to a common risk factor, simultaneous alcohol and tobacco intoxication. The high frequency of these secondary localisations, which can be synchronous or metachronous, suggests they should be routinely sought during p

BACKGROUND: The incidence of multiple ipsilateral breast cancers (MIBC), which includes multifocal and multicentric tumors, is increasing. Despite breast conserving surgery (BCS) being the mainstay of treatment in early breast cancer, it is considered controversial for MIBC due to oncological safety concerns. The aim was to compare oncological outcomes of BCS compared with mastectomy for patients with MIBC.
METHODS: A systematic literature search of relevant databases for comparative studies was conducted. A meta-analysis using the Mantel-Haenszel method was performed to calculate risk ratios

We present the case of a 75-year-old woman with a vulvar collision tumor consisting of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and primary extramammary Paget disease (EMPD). The patient presented for evaluation of a pigmented nodule on the right labium majus identified 1 year ago. The nodule was excised, and histopathology revealed nests of basaloid cells with nuclear palisading surrounded by myxoid stroma, consistent with nodular BCC. In addition, scattered intraepidermal cells with clear amphophilic cytoplasm at the periphery of the specimen raised suspicion for EMPD coexistence. Further visual inspectio

RATIONALE: Appendiceal goblet cell adenocarcinoma (AGCA) synchronous with colorectal cancer (CRC) is extremely rare, with only a few cases reported in the literature. The oncogenic mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment of the coexistence of AGCA and CRC face significant challenges. This case report describes a patient diagnosed with ascending colon adenocarcinoma and severe anemia. Pathological examination after radical right hemicolectomy revealed goblet cell adenocarcinoma in the appendix. The patient subsequently received postoperative chemotherapy, and the prognosis was favorable.

A 65-year-old man was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer during a medical checkup that revealed liver dysfunction. He was referred to our hospital seeking bloodless treatment due to religious beliefs. Blood tests revealed elevated hepatobiliary enzyme levels, and abdominal echocardiography revealed a broad nodular protuberant lesion in the body of the gallbladder and marked dilatation of the common bile duct. PET revealed marked abnormal accumulation of FDG in the gallbladder mass and duodenal papilla. Based on the imaging findings, double cancers of the gallbladder and duodenal papilla were di

Ileal (I) and pancreatic (Pan) neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are among the most common digestive neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs). Coexisting NETs at both sites are rare, and establishing the primary or metastatic nature of the two lesions may be crucial for the appropriate treatment. We reviewed all the clinical reports of patients with INETs or PanNETs, diagnosed and treated in our ENETS Center of Excellence between 2012 and 2022. We selected patients with a history of synchronous or metachronous neuroendocrine (NE) lesions at the ileum and pancreas. For those with available histological sampl

The patient was a 72-year-old woman with a history of surgery for uterine, bladder, left breast, and rectal cancers. The patient was admitted to the emergency department due to abdominal pain and vomiting. Abdominal and pelvic computed tomography showed a mass lesion and bowel obstruction at the end of the ileum, and positron emission tomography showed a mass lesion with accumulation in the same area of the pelvis. The patient was referred to our department for surgical treatment. The tumor at the end of the ileum invaded the ileal conduit, abdominal wall, right-sided colon, and mouth of the i

Background: We describe a patient with sinonasal mucosal melanoma (SNMM) and an inverted papilloma, which existed independently in both nasal cavities. Case presentation: We describe an unusual case of a 74-year-old male patient with SNMM and an inverted papilloma. He presented with symptoms of coughing up blood and pain in the left forehead. The patient underwent surgical resection of the lesion, and the SNMM and inverted papilloma were confirmed by histopathology. The patient refused further treatment after surgery, but was re-admitted 7 months later with local recurrence of the left tumor a

Liposarcoma is a malignant adipose tissue tumor which mainly originates from the extremities and retroperitoneum. Primary pleural liposarcoma is very rare. Spindle cell lipoma is a rare benign adipose tissue tumor. A 66-year-old male was referred to our hospital for the evaluation of a mass-like opacity visible on chest X-ray. Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a well-defined soft tissue mass with internal low attenuations and adjacent multiple nodules in the upper lobe of the left lung, and surgical excision was subsequently performed. Histopathological findings revealed adipose tissue wi

Neurofibromatosis type I (NF1) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder associated with characteristic skin findings, as well as a fourfold increase in risk of malignancy. NF1 patient malignancies commonly include the central and peripheral nervous system, but these patients are also at high risk of developing gastrointestinal (GI) tumors. While most often these GI tumors are benign upper GI neurofibromas; clinicians should have a high suspicion for malignant tumors, degeneration into a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor or less common associated malignancies such as well-differentiated
