Low-dose-rate, low-dose irradiation delays neurodegeneration in a model of retinitis pigmentosa.

The existence of radiation hormesis is controversial. Several stimulatory effects of low-dose (LD) radiation have been reported to date; however, the effects on neural tissue or neurodegeneration remain unknown. Here, we show that LD radiation has a neuroprotective effect in mouse models of retinitis pigmentosa, a hereditary, progressive neurodegenerative disease that leads to blindness. Various LD radiation doses were administered to the eyes in a retinal degeneration mouse model, and their pathological and physiological effects were analyzed. LD gamma radiation in a low-dose-rate (LDR) condi

Mapping patterns of depression-related brain regions with cytochrome oxidase histochemistry: relevance of animal affective systems to human disorders, with a focus on resilience to adverse events.

The search for novel antidepressants may be facilitated by pre-clinical animal models that relay on specific neural circuit and related neurochemical endpoint measures, which are anchored in concrete neuro-anatomical and functional neural-network analyzes. One of the most important initial considerations must be which regions of the brain are candidates for the maladaptive response to depressogenic challenges. Consideration of persistent differences or changes in the activity of cerebral networks can be achieved by mapping oxidative metabolism in ethologically or pathogenetically relevant anim

Retromandibular fossa approach to the high cervical internal carotid artery: an anatomic study.

OBJECTIVE: Access to the high cervical internal carotid artery (ICA) is technically challenging for the treatment of lesions in and around this region. The aims of this study were to analyze the efficacy of approaching the high cervical ICA through the retromandibular fossa and to compare preauricular and postauricular incisions. In addition, the relevant neural and vascular structures of this region are demonstrated in cadaveric dissections. METHODS: The retromandibular fossa approach was performed in four arterial and venous latex-injected cadaveric heads and necks (eight sides) via preauri

Tuberculosis of the spine: a review.

We analyzed 124 papers published in the English language literature to define the indications and timing of surgery in spinal TB and to evaluate the outcome of various surgical procedures for kyphosis and neural outcome. Surgery in spinal tuberculosis is indicated for diagnostic dilemma, neural complications, and prevention of kyphosis progression. Up to 76% canal encroachment is compatible with a normal neurologic state as the spinal cord tolerates gradually developing compression. Patients with relatively preserved cord size, but with edema/myelitis and predominantly fluid compression on MRI

Enhanced temporal non-linearities in human object-related occipito-temporal cortex.

To what extent does neural activation in human visual cortex follow the temporal dynamics of the optical retinal stimulus? Specifically, to what extent does stimulus evoked neural activation persist after stimulus termination? In the present study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore the resulting temporal non-linearities across the entire constellation of human visual areas. Gray-scale images of animals, houses and faces were presented at two different presentation rates - 1 and 4 Hz - and the fMRI signal was analyzed in retinotopic and in high order occipito-tempo

Cardia bifida, defective heart development and abnormal neural crest migration in embryos lacking hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have revealed the essential role of hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1alpha), a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor, in cardiovascular development. We attempted to further characterize the underlying mechanisms resulting in abnormal cardiogenesis and defective angiogenesis in mice deficient for HIF-1alpha (HIF-1alpha(-/-)). METHODS: We analyzed cardiovascular development in HIF-1alpha(-/-) embryos at both the macroscopic and microscopic level. Gene expression was determined by RT-PCR, in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. Embryonic survival w

Organization of the lateral line system in embryonic zebrafish.

We describe the organization of lateral line nerves and ganglia in the embryonic zebrafish, Danio rerio. Two lateral line nerves are found anterior to the otic vesicle: the anterodorsal nerve innervates neuromasts of the supraorbital, infraorbital, and otic lines, whereas the anteroventral nerve innervates the mandibular and opercular lines. An additional two lateral line nerves are found posterior to the otic vesicle: the middle lateral line nerve innervates the middle line, whereas the posterior nerve innervates the occipital dorsal and posterior trunk lines. Preotic nerves converge on a sin

Response time, autonomic mediation, and reversibility of hyperoxic bradycardia in conscious dogs.

Normobaric hyperoxia decreases heart rate (HR) in humans and animals. This study explored the mechanisms of hyperoxic bradycardia by examining its response time, autonomic neural mediation, and reversibility in conscious dogs. Five trained mongrel dogs breathed from a mask as the inspired gas was alternated between air and O2 for multiple cycles, and continuous time series records of HR and oxyhemoglobin saturation were recorded on a digital computer and analyzed by the technique of ensemble averaging. Hyperoxia decreased HR by 9% (P < 0.001), but only gradually, requiring 5 min to reach stead

Histological features of axial structures during embryonic and fetal stages of human craniorachischisis.

Histological characteristics of developing axial structures in human conceptuses with craniorachischisis were investigated during the embryonic and fetal periods and compared with normal samples. The morphological relationship of the notochord to the axial skeleton and neural tube was analyzed along cervical and thoracic vertebral segments using serial paraffin sections. The embryonic stage of malformed conceptuses disclosed a correlated affection of the notochord and vertebral column, as well as the overlying central nervous system. The degree of histological changes within the spinal cord de

Auditory brainstem response (ABR) latency shifts in animal models of various types of conductive and sensori-neural hearing losses.

Clinical ABR studies in patients with peripheral hearing loss have led to conflicting results, some reporting increases in brainstem transmission time (BTT), some decreases, and others no change. In order to study this in a carefully controlled fashion, various types of peripheral hearing losses were induced in experimental animals: conductive hearing loss by occluding auditory meatus (rats) (CHL), noise induced temporary sensori-neural hearing loss (rats) (NI-SNHL), stimulus intensity attenuation (rats), (Atten.), and controlled hypoxemia induced temporary sensori-neural hearing loss (cats) (

Characterization of Low-Frequency Local Field Potential Activity and Functional Network Organization in the Pigeon Nidopallium Caudolaterale Across Entrance-Related Behavioral States.

Goal-directed behavior requires animals to integrate environmental information and select appropriate actions-functions commonly associated with the mammalian prefrontal cortex (PFC). The avian nidopallium caudolaterale (NCL) is functionally analogous to the PFC, but its neural activity across different actions at a decision point remains unclear. At a maze arm entrance, pigeons may enter, hesitate, or leave according to available information. We recorded local field potential (LFP) activity from the NCL in three adult pigeons performing a goal-directed maze task. Direct-enter, hesitation-leav

Ordinal pattern of brain electrical activity as a marker of stroke-induced alterations in motor imagery task.

While the multidimensional features of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals have proven to be a valuable source of information, the development of a comprehensive diagnostic tool remains elusive due to variability of responses as observed within the subjects and epochs. We investigate whether ordinal-pattern-based complexity measures of EEG signals can capture stroke-related alterations in motor imagery (MI) tasks. EEG recordings from 36 stroke patients (acute and minor) and 36 healthy controls were analyzed using permutation entropy (PE), a robust symbolic measure of temporal irregularity. S

Classification of Alzheimer's Disease by Modeling Brain Networks as Signed Networks Under Deep Learning Frameworks.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that remains a global challenge due to its complex pathology and the lack of definitive diagnostic tools. This paper introduces an innovative approach to predicting and analyzing Alzheimer's disease by constructing signed brain network models and leveraging signed graph neural network technologies. By modeling the brain network as a signed graph that incorporates both positive and negative correlations, we capture the nuanced interactions between brain regions more effectively than traditional methods. We utilize graph convol

Cross-region neuron co-firing mediated by ripple oscillations supports distributed working memory representations.

High-frequency (~90-Hz) ripple oscillations may promote integrative processing in mammalian brains. Co-occurrence of ripple oscillations has been associated with enhanced temporal binding of neural activity between nearby human cortical neurons, but whether co-ripple facilitation of neuronal coupling supports cognitive processing or occurs at greater distances remains unclear. Here we analyze intracranial recordings from patients implanted with microwire electrodes in the hippocampus, amygdala, ventromedial prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex and pre-supplementary motor area, bilatera

HGNNv2: Stable Hypergraph Neural Networks.

Hypergraph neural networks (HGNNs) are widely used models for analyzing higher-order relational data. HGNNs suffer from the rapid performance degradation with increasing layers. Hypergraph dynamic system (HDS) is a potential way to deal with this challenge. However, hypergraph dynamic system is confined to a time-continuous isotropic model, lacking positional information in the structural space of the hypergraph. In contrast, anisotropic diffusion can capture structural space differences among vertices, providing a more precise representation of the information propagation process in hypergrap

Visual place recognition with panoramic images using hybrid neural network models.

A mobile robot can localize itself in a mapped area by finding a recorded image of a visited place that is most similar to the current view, a technique known as Visual Place Recognition (VPR). We focus on VPR with panoramic images in indoor environments and on direct VPR methods in contrast to feature-based methods. In this context, a key challenge of VPR are appearance changes in the environment, e.g. due to variations in illumination, camera tilt, and rearrangement of objects. To improve the quality in these situations, we propose a novel combination of convolutional neural networks (CNNs)

Emerging attunement to native phonotactics in French-learning infants: A developmental event-related potential study.

Early sensitivity to phonotactic probabilities and restrictions suggests that infants may also perceptually repair illegal sequences, as do adult speakers, demonstrating attunement to their language-specific speech input. Here, we report, for the first time, neural evidence for phonotactic repair in French-learning 7-, 11-, and 14-month-old infants, investigating the */tl/>/kl/ repair.
