Automated classification of pollen grains microscopic images using cognitive attention based on human Two Visual Streams Hypothesis.

Aerobiology is a branch of biology that studies microorganisms passively transferred by the air. Bacteria, viruses, fungal spores, tiny insects, and pollen grains are samples of microorganisms. Pollen grains classification is essential in medicine, agronomy, economy, etc. It is performed traditionally (manually) and automatically. The automated approach is faster, more accurate, cost-effective, and with less human intervention than the manual method. In this paper, we introduce a Residual Cognitive Attention Network (RCANet) for the automated classification of pollen grains microscopic images.

Reconstruction residual network with a fused spatial-channel attention mechanism for automatically classifying diabetic foot ulcer.

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a common chronic complication of diabetes. This complication is characterized by the formation of ulcers that are difficult to heal on the skin of the foot. Ulcers can negatively affect patients' quality of life, and improperly treated lesions can result in amputation and even death. Traditionally, the severity and type of foot ulcers are determined by doctors through visual observations and on the basis of their clinical experience; however, this subjective evaluation can lead to misjudgments. In addition, quantitative methods have been developed for classifying a

A CNN and Transformer Hybrid Network for Multi-Class Arrhythmia Detection from Photoplethysmography.

Photoplethysmography (PPG)-based arrhythmia detection methods have gained attention with wearable technology, enabling early detection of undiagnosed arrhythmias. Existing methods excel in single arrhythmia detection but struggle with multiple arrhythmias due to challenges in extracting discriminative features from PPG signals. This study introduces a hybrid convolutional neural network (CNN)-transformer network for multiple arrhythmia detection from PPG signals. The model incorporates convolutional operations and self-attention mechanisms to capture both local features and global temporal dep

Which data subset should be augmented for deep learning? a simulation study using urothelial cell carcinoma histopathology images.

BACKGROUND: Applying deep learning to digital histopathology is hindered by the scarcity of manually annotated datasets. While data augmentation can ameliorate this obstacle, its methods are far from standardized. Our aim was to systematically explore the effects of skipping data augmentation; applying data augmentation to different subsets of the whole dataset (training set, validation set, test set, two of them, or all of them); and applying data augmentation at different time points (before, during, or after dividing the dataset into three subsets). Different combinations of the above possi

Deep learning for report generation on chest X-ray images.

Medical imaging, specifically chest X-ray image analysis, is a crucial component of early disease detection and screening in healthcare. Deep learning techniques, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have emerged as powerful tools for computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) in chest X-ray image analysis. These techniques have shown promising results in automating tasks such as classification, detection, and segmentation of abnormalities in chest X-ray images, with the potential to surpass human radiologists. In this review, we provide an overview of the importance of chest X-ray image analysis

MLMSeg: A multi-view learning model for ultrasound thyroid nodule segmentation.

Accurate segmentation of the thyroid gland in ultrasound images is an essential initial step in distinguishing between benign and malignant nodules, thus facilitating early diagnosis. Most existing deep learning-based methods to segment thyroid nodules are learned from only a single view or two views, which limits the performance of segmenting nodules at different scales in complex ultrasound scanning environments. To address this limitation, this study proposes a multi-view learning model, abbreviated as MLMSeg. First, a deep convolutional neural network is introduced to encode the features o

Lymph node detection in CT scans using modified U-Net with residual learning and 3D deep network.

PURPOSE: Lymph node (LN) detection is a crucial step that complements the diagnosis and treatments involved during cancer investigations. However, the low-contrast structures in the CT scan images and the nodes' varied shapes, sizes, and poses, along with their sparsely distributed locations, make the detection step challenging and lead to many false positives. The manual examination of the CT scan slices could be time-consuming, and false positives could divert the clinician's focus. To overcome these issues, our work aims at providing an automated framework for LNs detection in order to obta

Prediction of model generalizability for unseen data: Methodology and case study in brain metastases detection in T1-Weighted contrast-enhanced 3D MRI.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A medical AI system's generalizability describes the continuity of its performance acquired from varying geographic, historical, and methodologic settings. Previous literature on this topic has mostly focused on "how" to achieve high generalizability (e.g., via larger datasets, transfer learning, data augmentation, model regularization schemes), with limited success. Instead, we aim to understand "when" the generalizability is achieved: Our study presents a medical AI system that could estimate its generalizability status for unseen data on-the-fly. High-precision automatic identification method for dicentric chromosome images using two-stage convolutional neural network.

Dicentric chromosome analysis is the gold standard for biological dose assessment. To enhance the efficiency of biological dose assessment in large-scale radiation catastrophes, automatic identification of dicentric chromosome images is a promising and objective method. In this paper, an automatic identification method for dicentric chromosome images using two-stage convolutional neural network is proposed based on Giemsa-stained automatic microscopic imaging. To automatically segment the adhesive chromosome masses, a k-means based adaptive image segmentation and watershed segmentation algorit

MG-Net: Multi-level global-aware network for thymoma segmentation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Automatic thymoma segmentation in preoperative contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) images makes great sense for diagnosis. Although convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are distinguished in medical image segmentation, they are challenged by thymomas with various shapes, scales and textures, owing to the intrinsic locality of convolution operations. In order to overcome this deficit, we built a deep learning network with enhanced global-awareness for thymoma segmentation. METHODS: We propose a multi-level global-aware network (MG-Net) for thymoma segmentation

COVision: convolutional neural network for the differentiation of COVID-19 from common pulmonary conditions using CT scans.

With the growing amount of COVID-19 cases, especially in developing countries with limited medical resources, it is essential to accurately and efficiently diagnose COVID-19. Due to characteristic ground-glass opacities (GGOs) and other types of lesions being present in both COVID-19 and other acute lung diseases, misdiagnosis occurs often - 26.6% of the time in manual interpretations of CT scans. Current deep-learning models can identify COVID-19 but cannot distinguish it from other common lung diseases like bacterial pneumonia. Concretely, COVision is a deep-learning model that can different

Automated identification of pulmonary arteries and veins depicted in non-contrast chest CT scans.

We present a novel integrative computerized solution to automatically identify and differentiate pulmonary arteries and veins depicted on chest computed tomography (CT) without iodinated contrast agents. We first identified the central extrapulmonary arteries and veins using a convolutional neural network (CNN) model. Then, a computational differential geometry method was used to automatically identify the tubular-like structures in the lungs with high densities, which we believe are the intrapulmonary vessels. Beginning with the extrapulmonary arteries and veins, we progressively traced the i

Synergistically segmenting choroidal layer and vessel using deep learning for choroid structure analysis.

Objective. The choroid is the most vascularized structure in the human eye, whose layer structure and vessel distribution are both critical for the physiology of the retina, and disease pathogenesis of the eye. Although some works have used graph-based methods or convolutional neural networks to separate the choroid layer from the outer-choroid structure, few works focused on further distinguishing the inner-choroid structure, such as the choroid vessel and choroid stroma.Approach.Inspired by the multi-task learning strategy, in this paper, we propose a segmentation pipeline for choroid analys

SMU-Net: Saliency-Guided Morphology-Aware U-Net for Breast Lesion Segmentation in Ultrasound Image.

Deep learning methods, especially convolutional neural networks, have been successfully applied to lesion segmentation in breast ultrasound (BUS) images. However, pattern complexity and intensity similarity between the surrounding tissues (i.e., background) and lesion regions (i.e., foreground) bring challenges for lesion segmentation. Considering that such rich texture information is contained in background, very few methods have tried to explore and exploit background-salient representations for assisting foreground segmentation. Additionally, other characteristics of BUS images, i.e., 1) lo

A single latent channel is sufficient for biomedical glottis segmentation.

Glottis segmentation is a crucial step to quantify endoscopic footage in laryngeal high-speed videoendoscopy. Recent advances in deep neural networks for glottis segmentation allow for a fully automatic workflow. However, exact knowledge of integral parts of these deep segmentation networks remains unknown, and understanding the inner workings is crucial for acceptance in clinical practice. Here, we show that a single latent channel as a bottleneck layer is sufficient for glottal area segmentation using systematic ablations. We further demonstrate that the latent space is an abstraction of the

Robust deep learning-based semantic organ segmentation in hyperspectral images.

Semantic image segmentation is an important prerequisite for context-awareness and autonomous robotics in surgery. The state of the art has focused on conventional RGB video data acquired during minimally invasive surgery, but full-scene semantic segmentation based on spectral imaging data and obtained during open surgery has received almost no attention to date. To address this gap in the literature, we are investigating the following research questions based on hyperspectral imaging (HSI) data of pigs acquired in an open surgery setting: (1) What is an adequate representation of HSI data for

An Efficient Stacked Deep Transfer Learning Model for Automated Diagnosis of Lyme Disease.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Lyme disease is one of the most common vector-borne infections. It typically causes cardiac illnesses, neurologic illnesses, musculoskeletal disorders, and dermatologic conditions. However, most of the time, it is poorly diagnosed due to many similarities with other diseases such as drug rash. Given the potentially serious consequences of unnecessary antimicrobial treatments, it is essential to understand frequent and uncommon diagnoses that explain symptoms in this population. Recently, deep learning models have been used for the diagnosis of various rash-related diseases. However, these mode
