Area 3a: topographic organization and cortical connections in marmoset monkeys.

The functional organization of area 3a, a cortical field proposed to be involved in somato-motor-vestibular integration, has never been described for any primate. In the present investigation, the topographic organization and connections of area 3a were examined in marmosets using electrophysiological recording and anatomical tracing techniques. Multi-unit neuronal activity was recorded at a number of closely spaced sites; receptive fields (RFs) for neurons were determined, and the optimal stimulus was identified. In all cases, neurons in area 3a responded to the stimulation of deep receptors

Neural connections in and around the cavernous sinus in rat, with special reference to cerebrovascular innervation.

There is a confluence in and around the cavernous sinus of neural pathways innervating the intracranial structures. To determine the patterns of innervation, particularly of the cerebral arteries, we stained whole-mount preparations of the cavernous sinus and adjacent regions of the rat for acetylcholinesterase. The cavernous nerve plexus, with several small ganglia, mainly occupied the lateral wall of the sinus and extended laterally above the ophthalmic and maxillary divisions of the trigeminal nerve, in relation to the oculomotor and trochlear nerves. The cavernous plexus was connected to t…

How lesioning the nucleus praeeminentialis affects electrolocation behavior in the weakly electric fish, Apteronotus leptorhynchus.

The ability to orient to and track moving electrolocation targets was assessed in normal Apteronotus leptorhynchus and in those with unilateral lesions of the nucleus praeeminentialis dorsalis. 1. Each fish was trained to hover between two vertical metal rods and track their movement. Two aspects of this behavior were measured: a) the hovering position of the fish relative to stationary rods; b) the latency between the onset of rod motion and the fish's tracking response. Control fish hovered midway between stationary rods, while lesioned fish hovered closer to the rod ipsilateral to the lesio

Localization of trigeminal sensory innervation to the tongue and pharynx of the cat using horseradish peroxidase as tracer.

Trigeminal sensory innervation to the tongue and pharynx was investigated in the cat, using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) as a retrograde tracer. Following HRP application to the tongue, cells were labeled primarily in the posterolateral portion of the trigeminal ganglion. The pharynx was divided according to classical methodology into three regions: the epipharynx (nasopharynx), mesopharynx (oropharynx), and hypopharynx. When HRP was applied to the epipharynx and mesopharynx, HRP-labeled cells were found in the anteromedial and posterolateral portions of the trigeminal nerve, respectively. Whe

Isolated eyelid-opening apraxia: report of a new levodopa-responsive syndrome.

Eyelid-opening apraxia (or involuntary levator inhibition) has been described chiefly in the context of basal ganglia disease. We present two novel cases in which apraxia of eyelid opening developed in the absence of any other CNS signs, and which resolved following treatment with levodopa. We suggest that when inability to open the eyes occurs without associated motor impairment, "apraxia" is the correct descriptive term, and a trial of levodopa should be considered.

The origin of the luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) neurons in newts (Cynops pyrrhogaster): the effect of olfactory placode ablation.

Neurons containing luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) are first detected in newt embryos (Cynops pyrrhogaster) in the olfactory epithelium and ventromedial portion of the olfactory nerve, after which they sequentially appear in the intracerebral course of the terminal nerve at prometamorphosis, and in the septo-preoptic area at postmetamorphosis. In adults, however, LHRH-immunoreactive cells are rarely seen in the nasal region, and their distribution shifts into the brain, suggesting their migration. In order to ascertain the origin and possible migration route of these neurons in ne

Spontaneous neuronal unit activity in the primate basal ganglia and the effects of precentral cerebral cortical ablations.

The discharge properties of single neuronal units in the putamen, caudate nucleus, and globus pallidus were studied in awake primates. The effects of restricted deafferentation of the striatum were determined by recording single unit activity in animals with unilateral ablation of areas 4 and 6 of Brodmann. The most striking change was on the regularity of unit firing in the putamen. Units in the normal putamen exhibited a wide range of firing rates and variability. In many units discharge rate was very slow. After the lesion, putaminal units discharged in steady spike trains with highly regul

Origin, course, and endings of abnormal enteric nerve fibres in Hirschsprung's disease defined by whole-mount immunohistochemistry.

Accurate delineation of the intramural pathway of abnormal enteric nerve fibres in Hirschsprung's disease has previously proved impossible because the neural network is invariably transected in conventional histological sections. With the technique of wholemount immunohistochemistry (WI), the bowel segment is converted into a rectangular sheet and the serosa, long muscle (LM), circular muscle (CM), submucosa, and mucosa are separated into layers to allow each nerve plexus to be examined intact and neural pathways traced. The entire resected bowel specimens of nine HD infants and five infants s…

Studies on the rectoanal reflex in children and in experimental animals: an evaluation of neuronal control of the rectoanal reflex.

A single-chamber pressure probe for rectal electromanometry was developed which seems to be superior to the complicated multichamber systems not only for clinical but also for experimental purposes. Measurements of rectoanal reflex were carried out in 268 cases with abnormal bowel function, in 103 cases following operation for Hirschsprung's disease, and in 61 cases of imperforate anus to assess postoperative continence. Experimental studies were performed in 36 dogs, 27 of which were used for short-term and 9 for long-term studies. The results of clinical and experimental studies are describe

Increased ponto-geniculo-occipital (PGO) wave frequency following central administration of neostigmine.

In all mammals so far investigated the occurrence of ponto-geniculo-occipital (PGO) waves precedes the onset and maintenance of desynchronized (D) sleep. As unitary electrographic events, PGO waves provide an index for quantitative evaluation of physiological D sleep or the D sleep-like state evoked by centrally administered acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. The present study characterized PGO wave frequency and time course following central administration of neostigmine bromide (Neo). The results show that Neo produced a dose-dependent increase in PGO wave frequency and time course when inject

Simulation of 'stationary' SAP and SEP phenomena by 2-dimensional potential field modelling.

In order to model the distribution of potentials in the hand due to antidromic SAP propagation and in the body due to afferent conduction of the median nerve volley, 2-dimensional matrices of the appropriate shape were constructed, each containing a 'generator' consisting of up to 3 'source' and 3 'sink' points. The value of the field potential at other sites was calculated using a finite difference method. It was shown that the potential gradient is virtually zero in matrix zones which are separated from the region containing the generator by a constriction in the boundary of the conductor. P

Regional topography of spinal cord neurons innervating pelvic floor muscles and bladder neck in the dog: a study by combined horseradish peroxidase histochemistry and autoradiography.

To identify the spinal origin of the innervation of the bladder neck and pelvic floor muscles retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase and tritiated horseradish peroxidase was used in a technique combining histochemistry and autoradiography. This technique proved to be suitable for differential labeling of spinal cord neurons innervating two different targets, thus extension as well as overlap of different nuclei could be judged. The parasympathetic outflow was concentrated in the intermediolateral and intermediomedial gray matter of S2, the somatic innervation was derived mostly

Cerebellar corticonuclear fibers of the paramedian lobule of tree shrew (Tupaia glis) with comments on zones.

Following a series of lesions in dorsal (DPML) and ventral (VPML) divisions of tree shrew (Tupaia) paramedian lobule (PML), the distribution of degenerated axons within the deep cerebellar nuclei was determined using the Fink and Heimer ('67) method. Damage to PML produced axonal degeneration in lateral (NL), anterior interposed (NIA), and posterior interposed (NIP) cerebellar nuclei. No degenerated fibers could be traced to either the medial cerebellar nucleus or vestibular complex, via juxtarestiform body, from lesions in PML. Corticonuclear fibers to NL, NIA, and NIP from PML cortex are top

A re-examination of the cerebellar projections from the gracile, main and external cuneate nuclei in the cat.

Cerebellar projections from the dorsal column and external cuneate nuclei in the cat have been studied by means of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase. Localized injections covering the entire cerebellar cortex and nuclei show that the gracile nucleus has a weak projection only to the cortex of the anterior lobe, but that there is a conspicuous projection from the main cuneate nucleus to the cerebellum. Most of these fibres reach lobule V and the adjacent parts of lobules IV and VI, and there is also a heavy projection to the paramedian lobule. Some fibres reach lobule IX and

The connections of the septal region in the rat.

The efferent, afferent and intrinsic connections of the septal region have been analyzed in the rat with the autoradiographic method. The lateral septal nucleus, which can be divided into dorsal, intermediate and ventral parts, receives its major input from the hippocampal formation and projects to the medial septal-diagonal band complex. The ventral part of the nucleus also sends fibers through the medial forebrain bundle to the medial preoptic and anterior hypothalamic areas, to the lateral hypothalamic area and the dorsomedial nucleus, to the mammillary body (including the supramammillary r

Distribution of thalamic input to different dendrites of a spiny stellate cell in mouse sensorimotor cortex.

A Golgi impregnated, gold-toned [2] spiney stellate cell from layer IV of mouse SmI cortex was reconstructed in three dimensions from serial thin sections to assess the apatial relationships of the synapses onto its dendrites. The distribution of thalamocortical (TC) synapses with the reconstructed dendrites is presented in this report. Thalamocortical axon terminals were labeled by lesion induced degeneration which, in mouse SmI cortex, may reliably indicate the numbers of thalamocortical axon terminals. Results indicate that thalamocortical synapses, which are distributed over most regions o

The vestibular nuclei in the domestic hen (Gallus domesticus). IV. The projection to the spinal cord.

Horseradish peroxidase was injected at various levels of the spinal cord of the hen and the cells in the brain stem, labeled due to retrograde transport of the tracer enzyme, were mapped with particular reference to the vestibular nuclear complex. The Deiters' nuclei project ipsilaterally to the spinal cord. The projection from the nucleus Deiters ventralis reaches down to the lumbosacral spinal cord. The spinal projection from the nucleus Deiters dorsalis is somatotopically organized. Cells localized rostrally within the nucleus project to upper parts of the spinal cord cells localized caudal
