Olfactory bulbectomy and play fighting in juvenile rats.

To determine the influence on play fighting of inputs to the brain that arise in or course through the olfactory bulbs juvenile male and female rats were bilaterally bulbectomized at 23 or 24 days of age. The frequency of play fighting and play initiation was observed in tests conducted in the home cage. Bulbectomy did not affect the frequency of play fighting or play initiation by males, but slightly increased the frequency of play fighting without altering play initiation in females. Since peripheral anosmia has only modest effects on play fighting, neither the chemosensory nor the modulator…

[Congenital anosmia].

A 72-year-old woman with congenital familiar lack of smell is described. General ENT and otoneurological examination were normal. The ability to smell was totally absent. By MR scan normal conditions were found in the nose, paranasal sinuses, the cribriform plate in the anterior cranial fossa and in the brain especially in the olfactory bulbs. Microscopic examinations of biopsy specimens from the olfactory region showed no signs of olfactory epithelium.

Mechanisms and functions of respiration-driven gamma oscillations in the primary olfactory cortex.

Gamma oscillations are believed to underlie cognitive processes by shaping the formation of transient neuronal partnerships on a millisecond … respiration-driven gamma oscillations are triggered by the activation of mitral/tufted cells in the olfactory bulb and are abolished during ketamine/xylazine anesthesia. Functionally, we demonstrate that they locally segregate neuronal assemblies through a winner-take-all computation leading to sparse odor coding during each breathing cycle. Our results shed new …

Comparative growth in the olfactory system of the developing chick with considerations for evolutionary studies.

Despite the long-held assumption that olfaction plays a relatively minor role in the behavioral ecology of birds, crown-group avians exhibit marked phylogenetic variation in the size and form of the olfactory apparatus. As part of a larger effort to better understand the role of olfaction and olfactory tissues in the evolution and development of the avian skull, we present the first quantitative analysis of ontogenetic scaling between olfactory features [olfactory bulbs (OBs) and olfactory turbinates] and neighboring structures (cerebrum, total brain, respiratory turbinates) based on the model…

Numbers of olfactory receptor cells and fine structure of olfactory nerves in various birds.

The numbers of olfactory receptor cells from electron micrographs in various species of birds were counted and the fine structure of their olfactory nerves was observed using electron micrographs. The birds were domestic ducks, a slay-backed gull, quails, budgerigars and bengalees. Data from pigeons obtained from a previous study were also included for comparison. The approximate numbers of olfactory cells on each side were 5,800,000 in the duck, 2,700,000 in the gull, 570,000 in the quail, 130,000 in the budgerigar, and 110,000 in the bengalee. From a cross section of an olfactory nerve, the

Embryonic and neonatal development of the vomeronasal and olfactory systems in garter snakes (Thamnophis spp.).

Newborn, unfed garter snakes (Thamnophis spp.) respond preferentially to aqueous extracts of natural prey items, and these responses are mediated by the vomeronasal system (VNS). Since the VNS, and possibly the olfactory system (OS), are functional at birth, we examined the ontogeny of VNS and OS structures in four embryonic stages and two postnatal ages in garter snakes. The results of this study show 1) significant changes in thickness of the receptor epithelia for both systems; 2) temporal differences in the innervation of the telencephalon for each system; and 3) concurrent development of

Single intranasal administration of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine in C57BL/6 mice models early preclinical phase of Parkinson's disease.

Many studies have shown that deficits in olfactory and cognitive functions precede the classical motor symptoms seen in Parkinson's disease … jor motor impairments. Such infusion decreased the levels of the enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase in the olfactory bulb, striatum, and substantia nigra by means of apoptotic mechanisms, reducing dopamine concentration in different brain structures such as olfactory bulb, striatum, and prefrontal cortex, but not in the hippocampus. These findings reinforce the notion …

The olfactory nerve has a role in the body temperature and brain cytokine responses to influenza virus.

Mouse-adapted human influenza virus is detectable in the olfactory bulbs of mice within hours after intranasal challenge and is associated with enhanced local cytokine mRNA and protein levels. To determine whether signals from the olfactory nerve influence the unfolding of the acute phase response (APR), we surgically transected the olfactory nerve in mice prior to influenza infection. We then compared the responses of olfactory-nerve-transected (ONT) mice to those recorded in sham-operated control mice using measurements of body temperature, food intake, body weight, locomotor activity and im…

Afferent and efferent connections of the nucleus sphericus in the snake Thamnophis sirtalis: convergence of olfactory and vomeronasal information in the lateral cortex and the amygdala.

This paper is an account of the afferent and efferent projections of the nucleus sphericus (NS), which is the major secondary vomeronasal structure in the brain of the snake Thamnophis sirtalis. There are four major efferent pathways from the NS: 1) a bilateral projection that courses, surrounding the accessory olfactory tract, and innervates several amygdaloid nuclei (nucleus of the accessory olfactory tract, dorsolateral amygdala, external amygdala, and ventral anterior amygdala), the rostral parts of the dorsal and lateral cortices, and the accessory olfactory bulb; 2) a bilateral projectio…

Developmental expression of reactivity to monoclonal antibodies generated against olfactory epithelia.

The developmental expression of immunocytochemical reactivity to 3 monoclonal antibodies (Mabs Neu 4, Neu 5, and Neu 9) that were generated against adult rat olfactory epithelium was examined in olfactory tissues of embryonic rats. Tissues examined included the nasal olfactory epithelium, nerve, and olfactory bulb, as well as vomeronasal epithelium and nerve. Reactivity patterns of these Mabs in adult rats have been described previously (Hempstead and Morgan, 1985a). All 3 Mabs show reactivity on the cell surfaces of neurons, axons, and dendrites of the olfactory epithelium proper. Neu 5 alone…

Sexual behavior and aggression in male mice: involvement of the vomeronasal system.

Recent observations have implicated the vomeronasal (accessory olfactory) system in the chemosensory control of rodent social behaviors. Chlamydia pneumoniae can infect the central nervous system via the olfactory and trigeminal nerves and contributes to Alzheimer's disease risk.

Chlamydia pneumoniae is a respiratory tract pathogen but can also infect the central nervous system (CNS). Recently, the link between C. pneumoniae CNS infection and late-onset dementia has become increasingly evident. In mice, CNS infection has been shown to occur weeks to months after intranasal inoculation. By isolating live C. pneumoniae from tissues and using immunohistochemistry, we show that C. pneumoniae can infect the olfactory and trigeminal nerves, olfactory bulb and brain within 72 h in mice. C. pneumoniae infection also resulted in dysregulation of key pathways involved in Alzheim…

Levels of Polonium-210 in brain and pulmonary tissues: Preliminary study in autopsies conducted in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The accumulation of detectable amounts of radon progeny in human tissues may be a risk factor for development and progression of chronic diseases. In this preliminary study, we analyzed the levels of alpha-emitting radon progeny Polonium-210 (210Po) in the olfactory epithelium, olfactory bulb, frontal lobe, and lung tissues in cadavers from the city of Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil. We also assessed the association between 210Po levels and exposure parameters for urban air pollution using linear regression models adjusted for age, sex, smoke, time living in Sao Paulo, daily commuting, socioeconomic in…

Prenatal development of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone-containing systems in rat brain.

Pre-embedding immunofluorescence was used to study the development of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-containing neuronal systems in the brain of fetal and newborn rats. Immunoreactive cell bodies are first seen in association with the ventral olfactory bulb at the fetal embryonic (E) day 15. At day E 17, single GnRH-containing neurons are found in the nasal system, along the olfactory nerve, in the ganglion terminale, olfactory bulb, septum-diagonal band complex, olfactory tubercle and in the ventrolateral hypothalamus. A major spurt in the development of the brain GnRH-containing s…
