A preliminary report of a disposable electrical non-fiberoptic endoscope in thoracoscopic surgery.

PURPOSE: Conventional thoracoscopic surgery requires a camera connected to optic fibers and rigid rod lens to ensure the provision of adequate light and quality of real-time images in the operative field. However, the camera, the connected optic fibers and rigid rod lens are not disposable due to cost, which is a concern as regards potential contamination of patients. To decrease such contamination, we designed a disposable device of extremely low cost which we tested in thoracoscopic surgery in animals. DESCRIPTION: A complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor is used for obtaining real-time im

Effects of injury and therapy on brain parenchyma pO2, pCO2, pH and ICP following severe closed head injury.

Simultaneous monitoring of brain parenchyma pO2, pCO2, and pH (PbO2, PbCO2 and pHb) has been tested in ICU environments using fiber optic sensors incorporated in probes 0.5 mm in diameter. An Institutionally approved protocol was used to test the concept and technology for monitoring PbO2, PbCO2 and pHb, and to observe the effects of injury and therapy interventions on each of the variables monitored, including ICP, the clinical standard. ICP and fiber optic pO2, pCO2 and pH probes were placed in 10 SCHI patients at bedside in the ICU using sterile technique. The probes remained in place for t

[3-dimensional topographic analysis of the papilla as a component of glaucoma diagnosis].

Three-dimensional topography of the optic nerve head can be objectively described by means of quantitative parameter values. Owing to interindividual variability in the disc configuration, new structural variables, such as the relative height of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer in stereo-videography and height variations in the contour line along the disc border in laser scanning tomography, have been shown to differentiate normal optic discs and optic nerve heads with pathological alterations better than standard volumetric data. Using laser scanning tomography, the effect of age o

Optic nerve in globoid leukodystrophy (Krabbe's disease). Ultrastructural changes.

Globoid leukodystrophy (Krabbe's disease) was diagnosed in an infant in whom a progressive neurological disorder and optic atrophy developed. At autopsy, ultrastructural examination of the optic nerves and cerebral white matter revealed characteristic tubular inclusions in globoid-epithelioid cells. Thinning of the nerve fiber and ganglion cell layers of the retina appeared to be due to retrograde degeneration of the optic nerve related to the abnormal metabolism of myelin. We discuss the pathogenesis of the clinical and pathological ocular findings, with regard to the inherited absence of the

Electrospun protein nanofibers with nanoscale morphological control for dopamine biosensing.

Electrospun protein-based nanofibers offer a renewable and biocompatible alternative to fully synthetic materials, benefiting from the use of naturally derived components and reduced reliance on petrochemical polymers. Despite their promise, the relationship between processing conditions and fiber morphology remains poorly understood. Here, we present a systematic study of bovine serum albumin:polyethylene oxide (BSA : PEO) nanofibers, focusing on controlling morphology and functionalization for biosensing applications. Electrospinning parameters, solution composition, and pretreatment procedu

Hydrogel Fibers-Based Biointerfacing.

The unique 1D structure of fibers offers intriguing attributes, including a high length-to-diameter ratio, miniatured size, light-weight, and flexibility, making them suitable for various biomedical applications, such as health monitoring, disease treatment, and minimally invasive surgeries. However, traditional fiber devices, typically composed of rigid, dry, and non-living materials, are intrinsically different from the soft, wet, and living essence of biological tissues, thereby posing grand challenges for long-term, reliable, and seamless interfacing with biological systems. Hydrogel fiber

Highly Aligned Poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) Nano- and Microscale Fibers and Tubes.

This study reports a facile method for the fabrication of aligned Poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) fibers and tubes based on electrospinning and oxidative chemical polymerization. Discrete PEDOT nano- and microfibers and nano- and microtubes are difficult to fabricate quickly and reproducibly. We employed poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) polymers that were loaded with polymerizable 3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene (EDOT) monomer to create aligned nanofiber assemblies using a rotating glass mandrel during electrospinning. The EDOT monomer/PLGA polymer blends were then polymerized by exposu

Superior segmental optic nerve hypoplasia: A review.

Superior segmental optic nerve hypoplasia (SSONH) is a congenital condition characterized by developmental abnormalities of the superior optic disc and an underappreciated differential diagnosis for glaucoma. The reported prevalence is less than 1%, although likely underestimated due to the difficulties with diagnosis. The exact pathophysiology of SSONH remains elusive, but a mechanism involving developmental attrition of retinal ganglion cells has been proposed, and maternal diabetes is recognized as a major risk factor. SSONH often is observed incidentally, and the patients typically are the

Rapid Characterization of Biomolecules' Thermal Stability in a Segmented Flow-Through Optofluidic Microsystem.

Optofluidic devices combining optics and microfluidics have recently attracted attention for biomolecular analysis due to their high detection sensitivity. Here, we show a silicon chip with tubular microchannels buried inside the substrate featuring temperature gradient (∇T) along the microchannel. We set up an optical fluorescence system consisting of a power-modulated laser light source of 470 nm coupled to the microchannel serving as a light guide via optical fiber. Fluorescence was detected on the other side of the microchannel using a photomultiplier tube connected to an optical fiber via

Evaluation of MidIR fibre optic reflectance: detection limit, reproducibility and binary mixture discrimination.

MidIR fibre optic reflectance (MidIR-FORS) is a promising analytical technique in the field of science conservation, especially because it is non-destructive. Another advantage of MidIR-FORS is that the obtained information is representative, as a large amount of spectral data can be collected. Although the technique has a high potential and is almost routinely applied, its quality parameters have not been thoroughly studied in the specific application of analysis of artistic materials. The objective of this study is to evaluate the instrumental capabilities of MidIR-FORS for the analysis of a

Video endoscopic sympathectomy using a fiberoptic CO2 laser to treat palmar hyperhidrosis.

Palmar hyperhidrosis is a common disorder among orientals. A new therapeutic technique for this disorder has been designed by combining a computer compact disc video endoscopic system with a fiberoptic CO2 surgical laser unit. The operation is performed under general anesthesia with alternating one-lung ventilation. There are three important aids in localizing the correct sympathetic segment: 1) direct visualization of its magnified image on the television monitor; 2) identification with an electrode probe palpation at its presumed location; and 3) monitoring the microvasomotor changes on the

Writing Bragg Gratings in Multicore Fibers.

Fiber Bragg gratings in multicore fibers can be used as compact and robust filters in astronomical and other research and commercial applications. Strong suppression at a single wavelength requires that all cores have matching transmission profiles. These gratings cannot be inscribed using the same method as for single-core fibers because the curved surface of the cladding acts as a lens, focusing the incoming UV laser beam and causing variations in exposure between cores. Therefore we use an additional optical element to ensure that the beam shape does not change while passing through the cro

Sciatic nerve transection decrease substance P immunoreactivity in the lumbosacral spinal cord of the frog (Rana catesbeiana).

Using immunohistochemistry and optical densitometry, substance P (SP) was investigated in the lumbar spinal cord of the frog Rana catesbeiana after sciatic nerve transection. In control animals, there was a high density of SP fibers in the Lissauer's tract and in the mediolateral band of the dorsal gray matter. Other SP immunoreactive fibers were observed in the dorsal part of the lateral funiculus and in the ventral horn. No SP label was found in any cell bodies. After axotomy, SP immunoreactive fibers decreased in the Lissauer's tract on the same side of the lesion. The other regions remaine

Aluminum-induced pulmonary fibrosis: do fibers play a role?

A 50-yr-old man with a history of 19 yr of work in the aluminum smelting industry, including 14 years in the potrooms, was found to have diffuse interstitial fibrosis, slightly more severe in the upper zones. He died of respiratory insufficiency 5 yr after initial presentation. Analysis of lung by electron optical techniques revealed 15,000,000,000 nonfibrous particles and 1,300,000,000 fibrous particles of aluminum oxide/g dry lung, values representing approximately a 1,000-fold increase over background exposure. The nonfibrous particles had a geometric mean diameter of 0.4 mu, and the fibers

Recurrent idiopathic neuroretinitis as a spectrum of atypical optic neuritis: a case report and literature review.

Recurrent idiopathic neuroretinitis is an inflammatory optic neuropathy characterized by optic nerve edema and macular star, associated with painless and recurrent episodes of visual loss, poor visual prognosis, and visual field defects related to nerve fiber layer injury. The disorder is sometimes mistaken for atypical optic neuritis. However, early diagnosis is important for visual recovery. Long-term immunosuppression has been shown to reduce the rate of recurrence and protect against severe and irreversible vision loss.

Nerve Fiber Layer Infarcts in Thiamine Deficiency.

Thiamine deficiency classically manifests as the triad of Wernicke encephalopathy: acute confusional state, ataxic gait, and ocular motor dysfunction. However, most patients do no present with this classic triad. Optic neuropathy in thiamine deficiency is a rare manifestation and is usually associated with fundus appearances of optic disc swelling or optic disc pallor. We present 2 unique cases of thiamine deficiency where the fundus demonstrated peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickening without florid disc swelling or pallor.

Superior segmental optic hypoplasia. A sign of maternal diabetes.

In a review of 10 patients with superior segmental optic nerve hypoplasia, all of whom were the children of diabetic mothers, 17 of 20 eyes had one or more of four characteristic findings in the optic disc: relative superior entrance of the central retinal artery, pallor of the superior disc, superior peripapillary halo, and thinning of the superior peripapillary nerve fiber layer. We believe that the presence of these four signs of superior segmental optic nerve hypoplasia strongly suggests maternal diabetes.
