Measurement of bone degradation products in serum using antibodies reactive with an isomerized form of an 8 amino acid sequence of the C-telopeptide of type I collagen.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for measuring type I collagen degradation products in serum (S-ELISA) was developed. The assay uses a high affinity polyclonal antibody which reacts with an isomerized form of an 8 amino acid sequence of the C-telopeptides of type I collagen (EKAHD-beta-GGR). Cross-reactivity to a nonisomerized synthetic peptide form of the 8 amino acid sequence is less than 0.2%. Values obtained in a group of premenopausal women (age, 33.3 +/- 3.11 years) were 69 +/- 24 ng/ml(n = 22). In a group of early postmenopausal women (age, 51.8 +/- 1.88 years) values obtained were

[Hyperostosis triangularis ilii -- a sacro-iliac stress phenomenon Part. 2 (Incidence, prognosis, pathogenesis, aetiology, tracer studies, differential diagnosis) (author's transl)].

The anterior iliac margin adjacent to the sacro-iliac joint contains a physiological zone of hyperostosis. Its shape is that of a triangular pyramid. Because of its small size, it is radiological invisible, but is nevertheless an indication of the presence of normal stresses passing from the mass of the trunk to the lower extremities. If for any reason, such as is described in this paper, the stresses on the hyperostosis zone are increased, the latter becomes enlarged, while still keeping its shape. It then appears on the radiograph as hyperostosis triangularis ilii. In approximately 50% of ca

Bone scanning.

Scanning is based on the uptake of a nuclide by the crystal lattice of bone and is related to bone blood flow. Cancer cells do not take up the tracer. Normally, the scan visualizes the highly vascular bones. Scans are useful and are indicated in metastatic bone disease, primary bone tumors, hematologic malignancies and some non-neoplastic diseases. The scan is more sensitive than x-ray in the detection of malignant diseases of the skeleton.

Clinical characteristics and prognoses of six patients with multicentric giant cell tumor of the bone.

In a randomized, double-blind study, 202 healthy adults were randomized to receive a live, attenuated Japanese encephalitis chimeric virus vaccine (JE-CV) and placebo 28 days apart in a cross-over design. A subgroup of 98 volunteers received a JE-CV booster at month 6. Safety, immunogenicity, and persistence of antibodies to month 60 were evaluated. There were no unexpected adverse events (AEs) and the incidence of AEs between JE-CV and placebo were similar. There were three serious adverse events (SAE) and no deaths. A moderately severe case of acute viral illness commencing 39 days after pla

Hearing loss in Paget's disease: a temporal bone histopathology study.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss in Paget's disease of bone (PDB) is typically mixed and bilateral. Although different mechanisms have been proposed, the pathophysiology of hearing impairment remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to describe the histopathologic findings of temporal bones in patients with PDB and elucidate possible pathologic mechanisms related to hearing impairment. METHODS: This is an archival human temporal bone study of 8 subjects diagnosed with Paget's disease from the temporal bone collection of the UCL Ear Institute. RESULTS: A fractured stapes footplate wa

Paget's disease of bone: analysis of 134 cases from an island in Southern Brazil: another cluster of Paget's disease of bone in South America.

Paget's disease of bone (PDB) exhibits a marked geographic variation. In Brazil, the prevalence of PDB is unknown and only a few clinical data are available. The aim is to determine clinical, laboratory, imaging and response to treatment data in a large PDB case series in the city of Florianopolis, Brazil. We have performed a retrospective study based on charts reviews of all patients with PDB followed at the University Hospital of the Federal University of Santa Catarina and at five different private rheumatology outpatient offices in Florianopolis, between 1995 and 2009. One hundred and thir

Radionuclide bone scanning in diseases of the spine.

Radionuclide bone scans provide a sensitive, no-risk diagnostic technique for the detection and evaluation of a wide variety of diseases of the spine. Scans and radiographs provide complementary diagnostic information, and should both be considered in the medical imaging portion of the diagnostic plan.

TIA1 variant drives myodegeneration in multisystem proteinopathy with SQSTM1 mutations.

Multisystem proteinopathy (MSP) involves disturbances of stress granule (SG) dynamics and autophagic protein degradation that underlie the pathogenesis of a spectrum of degenerative diseases that affect muscle, brain, and bone. Specifically, identical mutations in the autophagic adaptor SQSTM1 can cause varied penetrance of 4 distinct phenotypes: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), frontotemporal dementia, Paget's disease of the bone, and distal myopathy. It has been hypothesized that clinical pleiotropy relates to additional genetic determinants, but thus far, evidence has been lacking. Here

Diagnosis of Paget's disease of the pelvis using F-18 FDG PET/CT.

Sclerotic lesions of the right iliac bone were discovered incidentally in a 52-year-old Korean woman. In this case, imaging of the right iliac bone showed intense osteoblastic activity on the bone scan and very mild F-18-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG) uptake on positron emission tomography (PET). Since Paget's disease is rare in Koreans, we aimed to rule out other bone diseases such as osteoblastic metastasis or osteomyelitis. These results allowed us to exclude chronic osteomyelitis or malignancy and clarify the diagnosis of Paget's disease of the iliac bone. This case illustrates how F-18 FDG P

The 'mouse face' appearance of the vertebrae in Paget's disease.

Paget's disease is occasionally found as an incidental finding on bone scans performed for the evaluation of metastatic disease, which causes a diagnostic and a subsequent therapeutic dilemma. We have previously described the "Mouse Face" appearance of vertebrae on bone scans (increased uptake in the vertebral body, posterior elements, and the spinous process), which was fairly specific for Paget's disease in a small series. This retrospective study was undertaken to determine if this observation holds true in a larger series. Bone scans performed in 2,881 patients were randomly selected, and

Computed tomography of Paget disease of the skull versus fibrous dysplasia.

OBJECTIVE: Radiologists are often challenged to review CT examinations of the skull without pertinent clinical information or plain radiographs. Skull lesions of fibrous dysplasia (FD) may often be confused with Paget disease (PD). The purpose of this article is to evaluate radiographic similarities and to find the signs that can differentiate PD from FD of the skull on head CT and to describe the CT imaging features of PD and FD. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: CT scans of the skull in eight cases of PD, 18 cases of FD (13 cases of skull and facial bones, five cases of only facial bones) and 10 normals

Radioactive tracers in peripheral vascular disease.

The use of radioactive tracers in the diagnostic and therapeutic evaluation of the patient with peripheral arterial or venous disease has proven to be clinically useful. Their application has provided a means by which the regional distribution of perfusion at the level of the microcirculation, at rest and under various stresses, can be assessed. Graft patency can be determined simply and repeatedly, and the relative perfusion of "ischemic" ulcers can be used to assess their healing potential. The presence of arteriovenous shunts can be verified, localized, and quantified. Venous thrombi can be
