A retrospective study in tumour characteristics and clinical outcomes of overweight and obese women with breast cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity and breast cancer are two major pathologies closely associated with increasing incidence and mortality rates, especially amongst women. The association between both diseases have been thoroughly discussed but much is still to uncover. AIM: The aim of this study is to analyse tumour characteristics and clinical outcomes of overweight and obese women to disclosure potential associations and better understand the impact of obesity in breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinicopathological information of 2246 women were extracted from the institutional database of compreh…

Childhood sexual abuse and food addiction severity in a clinical sample of individuals with overweight or obesity.

PURPOSE: A higher risk of food addiction (FA) in individuals reporting childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has been well demonstrated with community samples, but studies including clinical samples failed to replicate this relation. This study examined, among individuals presenting eating and weight disorders, the risk of FA for those reporting CSA while considering the severity of CSA and other types of traumas. METHODS: Participants (N = 187) completed a DSM-5 diagnosis assessment and questionnaires on LimeSurvey evaluating FA, interpersonal traumas, depressive level, body esteem, dieting/weight pr

Influence of prenatal exercise on the relationship between maternal overweight and obesity and select delivery outcomes.

Women with overweight or obesity (OWOB) have an increased risk of cesarean birth, preterm birth (PTB), and high birth weight infants. Although regular exercise decreases this risk in healthy weight women, these associations have not been explored in OWOB. Women were randomized at 13-16 weeks' gestation to 150-min of moderate-intensity exercise (n = 131) or non-exercising control (n = 61). Delivery mode, gestational age (GA), and birth weight (BW) were obtained via electronic health records. Pregnant exercisers had no differences in risk of cesarean birth, PTB, or BW compared to control partici…

Relationship between the double burden of malnutrition and mental health in overweight and obese adult women.

The co-existence of overweight or obesity with concurrent deficiency of one or more nutrients is referred to as double burden of malnutrition (DBM), and numerous mental health impairments have been associated with a variety of nutrient deficiencies. Although DBM is relevant for several health outcomes, the ubiquitous involvement of vitamin D across multiple systems and tissues suggests D insufficiency as a viable target for nutritional modification. The present study aimed to evaluate the contribution of DBM and mental health among adult women. Study participants included 300 women, aged 18-59…

The association between vitamin D deficiency and metabolic syndrome in Ukrainian adolescents with overweight and obesity.

PURPOSE: This work aims to determine the association between vitamin D deficiency and metabolic syndrome in overweight and obese adolescents from Ukraine. METHODS: Anthropometric measurements were taken and general and biochemical examinations were performed on 136 obese and overweight adolescents and 60 adolescents with normal body weight. The vitamin D status was determined using 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) (calcidiol) levels in blood serum. To establish the factors influencing vitamin D status, the subjects were asked to answer a questionnaire and 2007 International Diabetes Federation d…

Prevention of overweight and obesity in a Norwegian public health care context: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Greater understanding about the prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity in preschool children within public health care is needed. This study assessed the impact of The First Steps module in routine primary health care including mapping of height/weight and diet followed by parental counselling of healthy habits on overweight and obesity in children aged 2 to 7 years. Further, we explored the experiences of public health nurses (PHNs) with the module. METHODS: Body weight and height obtained in 2014 and 2016 were extracted retrospectively for 676 children from the healt…

Autonomic nervous system activity changes in patients with hypertension and overweight: role and therapeutic implications.

The incidence and prevalence of hypertension is increasing worldwide, with approximately 1.13 billion of people currently affected by the disease, often in association with other diseases such as diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, dyslipidemia/hypercholesterolemia, and obesity. The autonomic nervous system has been implicated in the pathophysiology of hypertension, and treatments targeting the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), a key component of the autonomic nervous system, have been developed; however, current recommendations provide little guidance on their use. This review discusse

Childhood DNA methylation as a marker of early life rapid weight gain and subsequent overweight.

BACKGROUND: High early postnatal weight gain has been associated with childhood adiposity; however, the mechanism remains unknown. DNA methylation is a hypothesised mechanism linking early life exposures and subsequent disease. However, epigenetic changes associated with high early weight gain have not previously been investigated. Our aim was to investigate the associations between early weight gain, peripheral blood DNA methylation, and subsequent overweight/obese. Data from the UK Avon Longitudinal study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) cohort were used to estimate associations between earl…

The effects of exercise training on vascular function among overweight adults with obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity due, in part, to impaired vascular function. Exercise confers cardioprotection by improving vascular health. Yet, whether OSA severity affects the vascular improvements conferred with exercise training is not known. Overweight (body mass index (BMI) >27 kg/m2) adults were evaluated for OSA and enrolled in a six-week exercise intervention. Baseline assessments of brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (BAFMD), central augmentation index (AIx) and pulse wave velocity (PWV) were repeated post training. Fifty-one p…

A randomized trial of exercise and diet on body composition in survivors of breast cancer with overweight or obesity.

PURPOSE: Obesity increases the risk of cancer recurrence and death in survivors of breast cancer. This study tested the hypothesis that exercise alone, diet alone, and the combination of exercise plus diet reduce body weight and improve body composition in survivors of breast cancer. METHODS: In this 2 × 2 factorial trial, 351 survivors of breast cancer with overweight or obesity were randomized to one of four treatment groups for 52 weeks: control, exercise alone, diet alone, or exercise plus diet. Endpoints included body weight and body composition measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiomet…

The relationship between cortisol and IGF-I influences metabolic alteration in pediatric overweight and obesity.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Data on metabolic impairments in Cushing's syndrome and GH deficiency all suggest that the relationship between cortisol and GH/IGF-I axis in obesity may have a role in the related diseases. However, studies focusing only on one of these hormones are often controversial in paediatrics. We aimed to explore the simultaneous relationship between cortisol and IGF-I with the metabolic alterations in paediatric obesity. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional study in a tertiary care center. We recruited 876 (441 males and 435 females) overweight and obese children and…

The use of Broca index to assess cut- off points for overweight in adults: A short review.

The Broca formula was developed in 1871 by Pierre Paul Broca (a French Army Doctor) to help establish ideal body weight or normal body weight. Initially, the Broca Index (BI) was used to work out the normal weight but was later expanded to ideal Body Weight. Ideal Body weight (kg) = [Height (cm)-100]. The common methods used to explore the levels of adiposity include body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, skinfolds, bioelectrical impedance analysis, dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Even though there have been sever

Performance of mid-upper arm circumference as a screening tool for identifying adolescents with overweight and obesity.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent overweight and obesity is a global public health problem, associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome. Recently, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) has been suggested as a screening tool to identify overweight and obesity among school-age children and early adolescents (5-14 years). However, little is known about the potential use of MUAC in the late adolescence period (15-19 years). Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the performance of MUAC to identify overweight (including obesity) in the late adolescence period in Ethiopia. METHODS: We conduct…

Greenspace with overweight and obesity: A systematic review and meta-analysis of epidemiological studies up to 2020.

Several reviews have been conducted to assess the association between greenspace and overweight or obesity, but the conclusions were inconsistent. However, an updated comprehensive review and meta-analysis is warranted, because several high-quality papers have been published more recently. The objectives of this study are to systematically and quantitatively assess the evidence for a link between greenspace with overweight/obesity and to make specific recommendations for further research. We searched three English language databases, four Chinese language databases and the reference lists of p…

Weight Loss and Serum Lipids in Overweight and Obese Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Excess adipose tissue is associated with an abnormal lipid profile that may improve with weight reduction. In this meta-analysis, we aimed to estimate the magnitude of change in lipid parameters associated with weight loss in adults who are overweight or obese. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and Scopus from 2013 to September, 2018. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated interventions to treat adult obesity (lifestyle, pharmacologic and surgical) with follow-up of 6 months or more. RESULTS: We included 73 RCTs…
