Organ-specific Sympathetic Innervation Defines Visceral Functions.

The autonomic nervous system orchestrates the brain and body functions through the sympathetic and parasympathetic pathways. However, our understanding of the autonomic system, especially the sympathetic system, at the cellular and molecular levels is severely limited. Here, we show unique topological representations of individual visceral organs in the major abdominal sympathetic ganglion complex. Using multi-modal transcriptomic analyses, we identified distinct sympathetic populations that are both molecularly and spatially separable in the celiac-superior mesenteric ganglia (CG-SMG). Notabl

Influence of experimental oesophageal acidification on masseter muscle activity, cervicofacial behaviour and autonomic nervous activity in wakefulness.

Recent studies have been revealing the relationship between the stomatognathic system and the gastrointestinal tract. However, the effect of … altered ANS activity; a significant correlation was observed between masticatory muscle changes and parasympathetic nervous system activity. These findings suggest that oesophageal-derived ANS modulation induces masseter muscle activity, irrespective of the presence or absence of subjective gastrointestinal symptoms.

Peptidic regulation of heart rate and interactions with the autonomic nervous system.

Autonomic influences on the heart rate have been the subject of intense research for many decades and are classically devoted to the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. However, developments over the past few years in our knowledge of the organization of the autonomic nervous system have led to the conclusion that in addition to the classical transmitters, peptidic transmitters are clearly present and have direct or indirect actions on cardiac conduction. Neuropeptides have been found to collocate with each other or with classical transmitters, thereby increasing the variety of chemical s

Insights from the study of heart rate variability.

Indices of heart rate variability (HRV) provide a window onto autonomic modulation of the heart. HRV indices, determined in either the time or frequency domain, are closely related and reflect parasympathetic, mixed sympathetic, and parasympathetic and circadian rhythms. In population studies, decreased HRV has had predictive value for mortality among healthy adults. It is a well-established risk factor for arrhythmic events and mortality among post-myocardial-infarction patients but has only moderate sensitivity and specificity. Decreased HRV has had mixed predictive success in congestive hea

Sex difference of LiCl-induced feeding suppression and, autonomic and HPA axis responses in crows.

Visceral sensation is crucial for feeding, emotion, and decision making in humans and non-human animals. Visceral discomforting stimulation activates stress-coping systems, such as the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, with varied responses and thresholds between sexes. Despite these systems working together during visceral discomfort, ANS and HPA have been separately investigated with few studies examining the co-occurrence of the ANS and HPA responses to visceral stimulations. The basic profiles of the ANS and HPA responses to visceral discomfort a

The Relevance of Heart Rate Variability for Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy.

This review examines what constitutes heart rate variability (HRV), the relationship between HRV and the autonomic nervous system, and the physiology driving HRV. HRV is correlated with vagal nerve activity and parasympathetic nervous activation. Higher HRV is correlated with youth, active lifestyle, adaptive capacity, and good health. Next, the review examines the medical significance of HRV, especially the correlation between lower HRV and the presence of medical and psychological disorders. In general, HRV serves as a biomarker for health and disease, an index of autonomic nervous system dy

A neurologic basis for the overactive bladder.

OBJECTIVES: The functions of the lower urinary tract (LUT) to store and periodically release urine are dependent on neural circuits in the brain and spinal cord. This paper reviews the central neural control of micturition and how disruption of this control can lead to bladder overactivity and incontinence. METHODS: Neuroanatomic, electrophysiologic, and pharmacologic techniques have provided information about the neural circuitry and the neurotransmitters involved in the central nervous control of voiding. Experimental models of neural injury, including spinal cord transection, cerebral infa

Screening Female Patients With Autonomic Nervous System Imbalance Using the Toho Medical Index Before Tooth Extraction.

OBJECTIVE: Imbalanced autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity raises concerns about the development of systemic complications during dental treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a psychological test (Toho Medical Index (TMI)) prior to the impacted mandibular third molar extraction can identify patients with potentially imbalanced autonomic function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective study, 34 healthy adult patients with no history of systemic disease were assigned to either the autonomic imbalance group (type II, III, IV) or the control group (type I) based on

ATP as a cotransmitter in sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves - another Burnstock legacy.

Geoff Burnstock created an outstanding scientific legacy that includes identification of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the gut, the discovery and characterisation of a large family of purine and uridine nucleotide-sensitive ionotropic P2X and metabotropic P2Y receptors and the demonstration that ATP is as an excitatory cotransmitter in autonomic nerves. The evidence for cotransmission includes that: 1) ATP is costored with noradrenaline in synaptic vesicles in postganglionic sympathetic nerves innervating smooth muscle tissues, including the vas deferens

Heart rate variability in patients with somatic symptom disorders and functional somatic syndromes: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

This research is aimed to systematically review heart rate variability (HRV) findings of functional somatic syndromes (FSSs) and somatic symptom disorders (SSDs), and to compare the HRV values between FSSs/SSDs patients and healthy individuals. We included clinical studies assessing HRV (including baseline HRV and HRV reactivity) in FSSs/SSDs and healthy participants. We searched PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, MEDLINE, and Web of Science databases from the earliest available date to June 2019. Eighty-five studies comprising 3242 FSSs/SSDs patients and 2321 controls were included in the main meta-an

Early and late postictal cardiac electrophysiological changes associated with low, moderate, and high dose electroconvulsive shocks.

BACKGROUND: Studies have examined the effects of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) on human cardiac electrophysiology. However, no study has so far examined whether these effects vary with the magnitude of the electrical dose used to elicit the seizure. Because the benefits and adverse effects of the ECT seizure are dose-dependent, we examined the effects of different electrical doses of electroconvulsive shocks (ECS) on cardiac electrophysiology in an animal model with a view to determine whether cardiac electrophysiology could be a useful proxy to evaluate the quality of the ECT seizure. Anatomical basis for impotence following haemorrhoid sclerotherapy.

Impotence has been reported as a rare but important complication of sclerotherapy for haemorrhoids. The relationship between the anterior wall of the rectum and the periprostatic parasympathetic nerves responsible for penile erection was studied to investigate a potential anatomical explanation for this therapeutic complication. A tissue block containing the anal canal, rectum and prostate was removed from each of six male cadaveric subjects. The dimensions of the components of the rectal wall and the distance between the rectal lumen and parasympathetic nerves in the periprostatic plexus were

Cholinergic innervation and function in the mammalian pineal gland.

Besides the noradrenergic sympathetic system originating from the superior cervical ganglion, a cholinergic innervation of the mammalian pineal gland has been studied over the past three decades. In 1961, it was shown that lesion of the parasympathetic greater superficial petrosal nerve of the monkey resulted in degeneration of nerve fibers in the pineal gland. This was supported by ultrastructural studies of nerve terminals within the pineal gland, demonstrating the presence of cholinergic terminals containing small clear transmitter vesicles. Biochemical studies further showed the presence o

Cholinergic nerve-mediated excitation in the guinea pig choledochoduodenal junction activated by distension.

The electrical basis of propulsive contractions in the guinea pig choledochoduodenal junction (CDJ), which are triggered by distension, was investigated using intracellular microelectrode recording techniques. The isolated CDJ was placed in a continuously perfused tissue chamber at 37 degrees C. Membrane potential was recorded from smooth muscle cells in either the ampulla or in the upper CDJ (upper junction) regions, which were immobilized by pinning. Distension of the upper junction (20-30 s) by increasing intraductal hydrostatic pressure (mean elevation: 2.0 +/- 0.3 kPa, n = 13) triggered "

Hypothalamic cholinergic systems in mercuric chloride-induced hyperglycemia.

The roles of hypothalamic neuron mechanisms in regulation of blood glucose were studied in rats. Microinjection of HgCl2 and neostigmine into the third ventricle under anesthesia caused marked hyperglycemia. To characterize the effective neurons in the hypothalamus, tissue contents of neurotransmitters and extracellular levels of metabolites in the ventromedial part of the hypothalamus were measured by microwave irradiation and in vivo brain microdialysis. HgCl2 increased both the content and the extracellular levels of choline. Neostigmine increased the acetylcholine content. In both instance

Atropine-resistant submandibular responses to stimulation of the parasympathetic innervation in the anaesthetized ferret.

1. Submandibular salivary and vascular responses to stimulation of the peripheral end of the chorda-lingual nerve at 20 Hz continuously for 60 min were investigated in anaesthetized ferrets, in which the sympathetic innervation to the gland was cut, in the presence and absence of atropine (2.0 mg kg-1). 2. Both the increase in submandibular salivary flow and protein output, which occurred in response to nerve stimulation, were substantially reduced following the administration of atropine, the latency was greatly increased thereby, and both responses were more transient but neither was abolish

Acetylcholine and muscarinic agonists increase synaptic ribbon numbers in the rat pineal.

Mammalian pinealocytes possess synaptic ribbons (SR) which are commonly present in photoreceptor cells at synaptic junctions. Pineal SR numbers undergo a diurnal rhythm parallel to that of pineal N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity and melatonin levels. Recent findings suggest that SR numbers, unlike NAT activity and melatonin synthesis and release, do not seem to be regulated by adrenergic mechanisms or neuropeptides in adult rats. Since the pineal gland also receives cholinergic nerve fibres, we have investigated in vitro effects of acetylcholine (ACh) and carbamyl-beta-methylcholine (CBMC; a

A monoclonal antibody raised against plasma membrane of cholinergic nerve terminals of the Torpedo inhibits choline acetyltransferase activity and acetylcholine release.

Monoclonal antibodies were raised against the synaptosomal plasma membranes (SPMs) purified from the electric organ of the Torpedo. One antibody that reacts preferentially with SPMs rather than with other membrane fractions isolated from this tissue was previously found to inhibit hydrophilic and amphiphilic choline-O-acetyltransferase (ChAT) activity. On immunoblots of SPMs, this antibody recognizes two polypeptides of 135 and 66 kilodaltons that are related; the 66-kilodalton polypeptide appears to exist as a monomer and as a dimer in SPMs. The antibody was also able to inhibit the calcium-d
