Comparison of endoscope-assisted versus conventional resection of parotid tumors.

Endoscopically-assisted partial parotidectomy for benign tumours has been reported, but we have evaluated its feasibility through different concealed incisions compared with conventional parotidectomy. A total of 124 patients with parotid tumours were enrolled in this retrospective study: an endoscopically-assisted group (n=37) compared with a group operated on conventionally (n=87). The incision for endoscopically-assisted partial, total parotidectomy and selective neck dissection was based on location and pathological characters of the parotid tumour. The sex and age of the patients, diamete

[Hodgkin's lymphoma of salivary gland: a case report].

Hodgkins lymphoma (HL) of salivary gland is extremely rare. We reported a bilateral HL in a female of 58 years old, whose main clinical complaint was bilateral enlargement of parotid gland and cervical lymph nodes. The clinical symptoms were relieved after intermittent treatment by anti-inflammatory drugs and traditional Chinese herbs resulted in misdiagnosis of chronic lymphadnitis. The postoperative pathological diagnosis was HL of parotid gland, submandibular gland and cervical lymph nodes. It implies that lymphoma shall also be take into consideration even if anti-inflammatory drugs and Ch

Monoclonal origin of primary unilateral multifocal pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland.

Primary multiple pleomorphic adenomas in a unilateral parotid gland in previously untreated patients is a rare finding, and little is known about the etiology and pathogenesis. Here, a highly unusual case of a primary multifocal pleomorphic adenoma consisting of 15 individual nodules is presented. It is shown that all nodes are clonally related and thus share a common cell of origin excluding an independent multifocal pathogenesis. Most likely, multifocal pleomorphic adenoma represents parasitic nodules that have been detached from a main nodule, which may have been the result of undisclosed t

[Cystadenolymphoma of the salivary glands: is there a familial role?].

The authors present two patients (mother and son) affected by cystadenolymphoma (Warthin's tumor) of the salivary glands, both surgically treated. A thorough review of the literature is conducted and the authors suggest that echographic screening of these neoplasia in first-degree relatives could be of value.

Expression of cytokeratins in Warthin's tumour (adenolymphoma) of parotid glands: specific detection of individual cytokeratin types by monoclonal antibodies.

This study evaluated the distribution of cytokeratins detected by monoclonal antibodies directed against individual keratin proteins in normal human salivary glands and epithelial tumour cells of Warthin's tumour arising in parotid glands to determine a more precise mapping of their cellular distribution. The normal salivary ducts showed the presence of cytokeratin 7, 8, 18 and 19 in the intercalated, striated and excretory ducts, the primary keratins of stratified and simple epithelia with a profile very similar to the non-cornified epithelium of the oral mucosa. The basally located cells of

Parotid Gland Lesions: Multiparametric Ultrasound and MRI Features.

High-resolution ultrasound (US), as a readily available, cost-effective and harmless imaging technique, is appropriately the initial imaging modality for salivary gland lesions. Benign tumors are reported to present with regular and well-defined margins, a homogeneous hypoechoic structure and demarcated vessel distribution, whereas malignant lesions are irregular, heterogeneous and diffusely perfused. Ultrasound and color Doppler features of benign and malignant salivary gland lesions overlap, and many benign tumors, particularly pleomorphic adenomas, may appear irregularly shaped, with a hete

The incidence and management of siaolocele after parotidectomy.

OBJECTIVES: (1) To determine if a postparotidectomy sialocele occurs at a higher incidence with a partial superficial parotidectomy compared with a near-complete parotidectomy and (2) to determine if needle aspiration versus observation yield more persistent sialoceles beyond 1 month. STUDY DESIGN: A single-surgeon, single-institution case series with a chart review. METHODS: Comparing 100 consecutive partial superficial parotidectomy procedures and 20 consecutive near-total parotidectomy procedures for formation of a postoperative sialocele. Patients were evaluated at 1 week and 1 month pos

[Cystic lymphoepithelial lesions in the head and neck area in HIV-infected patients].

Benign lymphoepithelial cysts (BLC) are rare disorders of salivary glands (0.6%). In patients infected by HIV, they are seen more often. In comparison to sporadic BLC, the patients are younger, the diameter of the cysts is up to 5 cm and they are often located bilaterally. At the Department of ENT, Head and Neck Surgery of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich, ten HIV-infected patients (two females) showed lymphoepithelial cysts (six times bilaterally). One of these revealed a metastasis of a small cell neoplasma near the cysts, another patient showed a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of low grade

Metastatic parotid gland malignancy: A preliminary study in an eastern Chinese population.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the incidence and clinicopathological patterns of metastatic carcinoma of the parotid gland. METHOD: Ninety patients with parotid gland metastases admitted to our hospital between January 2003 and December 2018 were included in this study. Clinical and pathological data were obtained from the medical records and follow-ups. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to assess overall survival of patients. RESULTS: Among the 90 patients, parotid gland metastases originated from the head and neck in 86 (95.6%), from non-head and neck in 4 (4.4%), from the oral cavi

A case report of metastasizing myoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gland arising in a recurrent pleomorphic adenoma.

Myoepithelial carcinoma, arising in a recurrent or in a pre-existing pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland is an extremely rare cancer. We herein report the case of myoepithelial carcinoma occurring in a recurrent pleomorphic adenoma, which showed a high metastatic potential. A 53-year-old male, who had undergone a superficial parotidectomy of the pleomorphic adenoma 2 years previously, presented with recurrent parotid swelling and with multiple coin lesions in the lung. A total parotidectomy and a thoracoscopic biopsy of the lung lesion revealed both lesions to be myoepithelial carcinoma.

An unusual Case of p63/p40 Negative Myoepithelial cell-Rich Parotid Pleomorphic Adenoma.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign salivary gland neoplasm; however, myoepithelial-rich variants with unusual immunophenotypes are rare and pose diagnostic challenges. We report a myoepithelial-rich pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland in a 23-year-old male presenting with a slowly enlarging, painless infraauricular swelling. Grossly, the lesion was well-circumscribed and encapsulated. Histopathology revealed predominantly spindle, oval, and plasmacytoid myoepithelial cells embedded in densely hyalinized fibromyxoid stroma, with sparse ductal structures. The paucity of ducts and

Clinicopathologic and molecular characterization of a series of sporadic trichoblastic neoplasms.

Trichoblastoma (TB) is a benign primitive follicular neoplasm that can occur in the setting of Brooke-Spiegler syndrome (CYLD mutations), in association with nevus sebaceous (mosaic HRAS mutations), or sporadically. We studied the histopathologic and molecular features of 16 sporadic trichoblastic neoplasms, including a case of trichogerminoma and a case of trichoblastic carcinoma arising within a TB. Sixteen tumors were identified in nine males and seven females (median age 64 years, range 33-97 years) involving the scalp (4), back (2), nasolabial fold (1), cheek (1), skin overlying the parot

Adenoid cystic carcinoma involving the external auditory canal. A clinicopathologic study of 16 cases.

Sixteen patients with a rare tumor, adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) involving the external auditory canal, have been studied. Clinically, most patients complained of ear pain, often of several years duration. On physical examination, a mass or a nodule usually was identified in the ear canal. In most cases, treatment consisted of a wide surgical resection of the auditory canal and adjacent structures. Histologically, these neoplasms had the same appearance as ACC originating in salivary glands. In eight cases, the tumor was confined to the ear canal wall and unquestionably arose in this area, p
