Simultanagnosia is a neuropsychological disorder characterized by a restriction of visuospatial attention. In addition, patients are able to identify local elements of a scene, but not the global whole. This may be due to a failure to scan and assemble local elements into a global whole (i.e. connect-the-dots). We monitored the eye movements of a simultanagnosic patient while she identified local and global elements of hierarchical letters. Scanning each local element was not necessary, nor sufficient, for successful global level identification. Our results argue against a connect-the-dots str

BACKGROUND: Perimetry remains one of the main diagnostic tools in glaucoma, and it is usually used in conjunction with evaluation of the optic nerve. This study assesses the capability of automatic pattern recognition methods, and in particular the support vector machines (SVM), to provide a valid clinical diagnosis classification of glaucoma based solely upon perimetry data.
METHODS: Over 2,200 patient records were reviewed to produce an annotated database of 2,017 eyes. Visual field (VF) data were obtained with HFA II perimeter using the 24-2 algorithm. Ancillary information included treate

Neuroborreliosis is a form of borreliosis that affects the central and/or peripheral nervous system. Although it can mimic neurologic and ophthalmologic disorders such as multiple sclerosis and optic neuritis, visual evoked potential (VEP) examination is usually not used in neuroborreliosis diagnostics. Combined VEP testing (pattern-reversal VEPs and VEPs produced in response to linear and radial motion) was performed in 81 patients with neuroborreliosis verified by laboratory results (positive polymerase chain reaction or intrathecal antibodies production). Thirty-four patients reported diplo

Visual search is a cognitive function of high ecological relevance. It involves rapid alternations between allocating and shifting attention. In patients with Alzheimer's disease, the duration of fixations during visual search increases already in the early stage of the illness. Subcortical vascular dementia (SVD), a newly defined subgroup of vascular dementia, has not yet been examined in this respect. SVD affects patients with a history of lacunar infarctions and/or transient ischemic attacks, focal neurological signs and evidence of subcortical white matter lesions as well as lacunes in the

This study examined the effect of color and form as support for picture recognition measured immediately and after a period of 20 minutes in two groups: a random sample of 80-year-old men and women, with a Mini-Mental-State-Examination (MMSE) score of >26 points (N=142), and individuals with confirmed diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) with a MMSE score ranging from 7-26 points (N=50). The result showed that individuals with AD could make use of spatial support for recognition at a significantly lower level than among the cognitively intact 80-year olds, but most interestingly with a simila

OBJECTIVE: To examine the neuroanatomic correlates of visual agnosia in AD.
METHODS: The authors performed an anterograde clinicopathologic study of 23 patients with clinically and neuropathologically confirmed AD in a 305-bed acute care geriatric hospital and a 165-bed acute care psychiatric hospital. The presence of apperceptive visual agnosia was assessed using the Ghent's overlapping figure test and the Gottschaldt's hidden figure test. Associative visual agnosia was examined using the conceptual items of the Columbia Mental Maturity Test. Correlations between neurofibrillary tangle (NFT)

Color vision (desaturated D-15), contrast sensitivity (Vistech 6500) and pattern electroretinograms (transient and steady state) were measured in nine patients with diagnosed normotensive glaucoma. Results were compared to those from visually normal controls subjects (n = 73) and patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (n = 51). Patients with normotensive glaucoma exhibited significant contrast sensitivity and pattern electroretinogram deficits similar to those evident in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. However, patients with normotensive glaucoma exhibited significantly better co

We report a 2-year prospective study of the electroretinographic response to reversal of checkerboard patterns (P-ERG) obtained in 63 eyes with acute optic nerve lesions. The aim of the study was to document the value of P-ERG regarding diagnosis and prognosis of four types of optic neuropathy: optic neuritis, compressive or hereditary optic atrophy, and traumatic optic neuropathy. We documented visual loss by neuro-ophthalmologic examination and recorded pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials (P-VEP). The initial P-ERG was normal to large- and medium-sized checks in 89% and the P-VEP abnor

A large group of individuals with retinal disease were tested prospectively for contrast sensitivity by means of Arden gratings. A subgroup of 19 were also tested with the Nicolet automated television system. Individuals with macular or peripheral dystrophy showed a general reduction in contrast sensitivity as visual acuity decreased. The loss of contrast sensitivity was more prominent for high spatial frequencies (6.4 cycles per degree) than for low ones (0.2 cycles per degree). Similar results were obtained for patients with achromatopsia and congenital stationary night blindness. Patients w

Recognition of faces and facial expression is an important component of non-verbal human social behaviour. It is believed to be older phylogenetically than verbal communication in man. Presumably we share basic brain mechanisms of face and mimic recognition with other primates. While palaeoanthropological artifacts indicate the existence of artistic creation in the sculptures and paintings of humans since the upper palaeolithic age (about 30,000 years ago), artistic interest in individual human faces is a rather recent development of mankind, which appeared about 4,500 years ago. Human face an

In Calliphora erythrocephala the visual fixation behaviour in one-eyed flies and partial blinded flies has been investigated. One-eyed flies show approximately the same stripe and edge fixation response as intact flies. Elimination of the frontal eye parts including the binocular field of vision does not effect the visual stripe fixation. On the other hand, if only the frontal areas of both eyes including the binocular field of vision are left open, no preferential direction can be observed (Fig. 1--3). The results imply the existence of a fixation-sensitive area of the eye located outside the

Two patients with visual agnosia underwent visual recognition and neuropsychological tests to characterize their perceptual functioning. Both had an initial "apperceptive profile" and evolved from cortical blindness. One had carbon monoxide intoxication and incidental agenesis of the splenium of the corpus callosum; the other had the clinical features of MELAS (mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like syndrome). The agnosia profile showed impaired object recognition but adequate visual matching and copying of unrecognized items. The patients were successful on form discri

In present high density electroencephalogram (EEG) study, we examined steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) correlates of object recognition. In SSVEP tasks a visual stimulus is presented repetitively at a specific flickering rate and typically elicits a continuous oscillatory brain response. This response is characterized by the same fundamental frequency as the initiating stimulus. The stimulus material consisted of a series of pictures depicting familiar and unfamiliar objects which have been successfully applied in previous EEG studies on object recognition. In particular, we presen

RATIONAL AND OBJECTIVES: Computer-aided detection (CAD) systems are intended to improve performance. This study investigates how CAD might actually interfere with a visual search task. This is a laboratory study with implications for clinical use of CAD.
METHODS: Forty-seven naive observers in two studies were asked to search for a target, embedded in 1/f(2.4) noise while we monitored their eye movements. For some observers, a CAD system marked 75% of targets and 10% of distractors, whereas other observers completed the study without CAD. In experiment 1, the CAD system's primary function was

Pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were recorded from 38 patients with lesions affecting the chiasmal area. Lesions were confirmed by computer tomography and all patients had ophthalmologic examination. VEPs to full-field stimulation (0-16 degrees r) were compared with those obtained with half-field stimulation. Changes in VEPs were seen as a nonrecordable or attenuated P 100 (abnormal amplitude ratio) or as a prolonged P 100. Analysis of the records showed that temporal half-field stimulation (crossed fibers) yielded a higher rate of abnormal responses (80%) than full-field stim

Previous studies indicate that the dual formats of templates recursively operate in tandem during visual search tasks. The guiding template with coarse features supports target localization, whereas the target template with precise features supports target identification. However, whether a sound that provides target-consistent identity information would flexibly interact with these two templates to optimize search behavior remains unclear. Across two experiments, event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while participants searched for and identified a visual target letter ("V" or "K"). I

Humans are extremely adept at categorizing complex visual environments, an ability supported by a network of scene-selective cortical areas in occipitotemporal cortex (OTC), primarily parahippocampal- and occipital-place area (PPA, OPA, respectively). Despite increasing knowledge on the development of the scene-selective network, it is still not well-understood how experience impacts scene-related activity in the adult brain. A key question is how activity in scene-selective cortex changes as people gain experience in categorizing scenes. To address this question, we conducted an fMRI training

The amblyopic deficit in letter acuity is often more severe than that predicted using periodic grating stimuli. One proposed explanation for this is spatial scrambling of the input received from the amblyopic eye. In this study, we generated letter stimuli simulating either: i) "cortical scrambling" at the output of oriented model "simple cells", or ii) "subcortical scrambling" of isotropic subunits forming the input to those simple cells. We used these stimuli to investigate whether amblyopic participants might be particularly vulnerable, or particularly resilient, to spatial scrambling. In t

The perirhinal cortex (PRC) and parahippocampal cortex (PHC) are core regions along the visual dual-stream. The specific functional roles of the PRC and PHC and their interactions with the downstream hippocampus cortex (HPC) are crucial for understanding visual memory. Our research used human intracranial EEGs to study the neural mechanism of the PRC, PHC, and HPC in visual object encoding. Single-regional function analyses found evidence that the PRC, PHC, and HPC are activated ∼100 ms within the broad-gamma band and that the PRC was more strongly activated than either the PHC or the HPC afte
