Evaluating the effect of donor anxiety levels and lifestyle characteristics on the activation of platelet concentrates.

BACKGROUND: Smoking, alcohol use, performing regular physical exercise, dietary habits, and anxiety level may cause platelet activation. We aimed to evaluate the anxiety levels, smoking status, alcohol intake, and sportive habits of donors, and determine their impact on the quality of apheresis-platelets. METHODS: State and Transient Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was used to determine the level of donors' anxiety. STAI has two subscales: S-anxiety scale (STAI-I) and T-anxiety scale (STAI-II), each comprising 20 questions rated on a 4-point Likert scale. Data on smoking, alcohol consumption, and pe

Gone fishin'… for distinct patterns of belief-updating in late-life worry and rumination.

INTRODUCTION: Worry and rumination are two common forms of repetitive negative thinking encountered as core symptoms of anxiety and depression. They are difficult to treat and increase the risk of relapse for remitted depressive and anxiety disorders, especially in late-life. We propose that dysfunctional belief-updating is a fundamental cognitive mechanism underlying repetitive negative thinking and use a Bayesian model to test whether distinct components of belief updating are differentially associated with worry and rumination. METHODS: We recruited 83 older participants (age≥50) dimension

Data mining algorithm predicts a range of adverse outcomes in major depression.

BACKGROUND: Course of illness in major depression (MD) is highly varied, which might lead to both under- and overtreatment if clinicians adhere to a 'one-size-fits-all' approach. Novel opportunities in data mining could lead to prediction models that can assist clinicians in treatment decisions tailored to the individual patient. This study assesses the performance of a previously developed data mining algorithm to predict future episodes of MD based on clinical information in new data. METHODS: We applied a prediction model utilizing baseline clinical characteristics in subjects who reported

The impact of stress on motor performance in skilled musicians suffering from focal dystonia: Physiological and psychological characteristics.

Recent investigations have suggested that stress can modulate motor function. However, the impact of stress on motor performance of musicians suffering from focal dystonia (FDM) remains unknown. The current study assessed motor performance in 20 FDM patients and 16 healthy musicians (HM) before and under stress. Stress was manipulated using the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Motor performance was evaluated based on analysis of electromyographic (EMG) activity and temporal variability, while electrocardiography (ECG) and the level of free cortisol were used to test for objective alterations o

Prevalence of anxiety and depression and diagnostic utility of the CAT scale in spirometry-confirmed COPD patients: Findings from the Chinese Population Health and Multimorbidities Study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) frequently present with psychological comorbidities, including anxiety and depression, which may contribute to poorer clinical outcomes. However, the prevalence and impact of these mental health conditions in COPD patients have long been underrecognized. Leveraging data from the Chinese Population Health and Multimorbidities Study (CPHMS), a large epidemiological survey on chronic respiratory diseases in China, this study aimed to estimate the prevalence of anxiety and depression comorbidities among community-dwelling COPD

Efficacy and Safety of Electroacupuncture Through Nerve Stimulation in Patients With Anxiety Disorders: Protocol for a Randomized, Assessor-Blind, Three-Arm, Parallel-Group Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health disorders, affecting a significant portion of the population. However, conventional treatments, such as pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, often have limited effectiveness and may lead to undesirable side effects. Consequently, there is a growing demand for new alternative treatments for anxiety disorders. Recent studies suggest that electroacupuncture may demonstrate therapeutic effects in managing anxiety by mediating nerve stimulation. OBJECTIVE: This study is designed to assess the efficacy and safety of electroacupunct

Assessment of anxiety risk association with PAHs and aluminum co-exposure in an aluminum production facility.

BACKGROUND: Workers in aluminum production plants are occupationally exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including the neurotoxicant benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), as well as to aluminum dust and fumes. While the physical health effects are established, the psychological impact, particularly on anxiety, remains less explored. This study investigated the associations of urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP), a biomarker of PAHs exposure, and urinary aluminum levels with anxiety symptoms in aluminum workers. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 260 participants (130 exposed workers and 130

Detecting depressive and anxiety disorders in distressed patients in primary care; comparative diagnostic accuracy of the Four-Dimensional Symptom Questionnaire (4DSQ) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS).

BACKGROUND: Depressive and anxiety disorders often go unrecognized in distressed primary care patients, despite the overtly psychosocial nature of their demand for help. This is especially problematic in more severe disorders needing specific treatment (e.g. antidepressant pharmacotherapy or specialized cognitive behavioural therapy). The use of a screening tool to detect (more severe) depressive and anxiety disorders may be useful not to overlook such disorders. We examined the accuracy with which the Four-Dimensional Symptom Questionnaire (4DSQ) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale

The validity of the symptom checklist depression and anxiety subscales: A general population study in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: The Symptom Checklist (SCL) is used as a screening tool in patient settings, but is also used as a diagnostic proxy for depression and anxiety in public health surveys. However, there are few validation studies based on general population samples. This study aims to validate the SCL subscales for depression and anxiety in a general population sample in Stockholm, Sweden. METHODS: We used a stratified random sample answering first a postal questionnaire covering SCL (n=8613) and then a semi-structured psychiatric interview based using Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsych

Psychosocial and socioeconomic factors are most predictive of health status in patients with claudication.

BACKGROUND: As a key treatment goal for patients with symptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD), improving health status has also become an important end point for clinical trials and performance-based care. An understanding of patient factors associated with 1-year PAD health status is lacking in patients with PAD. METHODS: The health status of 1073 consecutive patients with symptomatic PAD in the international multicenter PORTRAIT (Patient-Centered Outcomes Related to Treatment Practices in Peripheral Arterial Disease: Investigating Trajectories) registry was measured at baseline and 1 ye
