Primary irritant dermatitis from topical clioquinol.

During the 2-year period 1976--1977, seven patients were studied with primary irritant dermatitis from topical preparations containing clioquinol. During the same period contact hypersensitivity to the compound was recorded in 35 eczema patients. Six of the seven patients with clioquinol irritancy had used creams containing 3% large crystal clioquinol and fluorinated steroids. One patient had used 6% small crystal clioquinol cream. Challenge tests with 3% small crystal and large crystal clioquinol creams showed that crystal size did not affect the appearance of irritant dermatitis.

Comparative effectiveness of topical drugs in dermatologic priority diseases: geometry of randomized trial networks.

Among the 100 initial priority topics for comparative effectiveness research, three concern topical drugs in the following dermatologic diseases: psoriasis, chronic lower-extremity wounds (CLEWs), and acne vulgaris (AV). Our objective was to explore the geometry of the corresponding networks of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We performed a review of RCTs on topical drugs in psoriasis, CLEWs, and AV. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL for published trials from 2007 to 2012 and ClinicalTrials.gov for unpublished trials registered since 2011. RCTs comparing at least one topical treatm

Topical mitomycin C can effectively alleviate dysphagia in children with long-segment caustic esophageal strictures.

Caustic ingestion in children and the resulting long esophageal strictures are usually difficult to be managed, and eventually, esophageal replacement was required for cases refractory to frequent dilatation sessions. Topical mitomycin C (MMC) application has been used recently to improve the results of endoscopic dilatation for short esophageal strictures. The study aims to assess the role of MMC application in management of long-segment caustic esophageal strictures. From January 2009 to June December 2013, patients presented with long caustic esophageal stricture (>3 cm in length) were incl

Open trial of topical tacalcitol [1 alpha 24(OH)2D3] and solar irradiation for vitiligo vulgaris: upregulation of c-Kit mRNA by cultured melanocytes.

Vitiligo vulgaris is a common skin disease, however some cases show poor clinical responses to topical steroid ointment or PUVA therapy. Such regimens are generally avoided in the treatment of facial lesions or in pediatric cases because of the undesirable side effects. To confirm the excellent response to combination therapy with topical vitamin D3 ointment and solar irradiation for vitiligo achieved in the initial patients, we conducted an open trial on other patients, most of whom had poor clinical responses to the prior therapies. Fifteen patients (9 men and 6 women) with vitiligo vulgaris
