Historic contamination alters mercury sources and cycling in temperate estuaries relative to uncontaminated sites.

Mercury (Hg) is a global and persistent pollutant which can be methylated to more toxic forms (methylmercury; MeHg) in natural systems. Both forms pose a health risk to humans and wildlife, and exposure often begins in aquatic environments. Therefore, quantifying aquatic concentrations and identifying source pathways is important for understanding biotic exposure. In this study, data from estuaries in the Northeast United States were combined to evaluate how point source contamination impacts the concentration and source dynamics of water column total and MeHg with an emphasis on sediment vers

PCB52 induces hepatotoxicity in male offspring through aggravating loss of clearance capacity and activating the apoptosis: Sex-biased effects on rats.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a kind of persistent organic pollutant, can induce hepatotoxicity in mammals. However, PCB-induced hepatotoxicity in offspring and the underlying mechanisms have been rarely studied. In the present study, Wistar rats were administered with corn oil or PCB52 (1 mg/kg body weight/day, by gavage) from gestational day 7 to postnatal day 21. In the PCB52-treated group, birth body lengths and weights were significantly decreased compared with the control group, suggesting developmental toxicity. Cytoplasmic injury in hepatocytes was observed in PCB52-treated male of

Suppressive effects of long-term exposure to P-nitrophenol on gonadal development, hormonal profile with disruption of tissue integrity, and activation of caspase-3 in male Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica).

P-Nitrophenol (PNP) is considered to be one of nitrophenol derivatives of diesel exhaust particles. PNP is a major metabolite of some organophosphorus compounds. PNP is a persistent organic pollutant as well as one of endocrine-disrupting compounds. Consequently, bioaccumulation of PNP potentiates toxicity. The objectives of the current study were to assess in vivo adverse effects of long-term low doses of PNP exposure on reproductive system during development stage. Twenty-eight-day-old male Japanese quails were orally administered different doses of PNP (0, 0.01, 0.1, 1 mg/kg body weight) da

Evaluation of the fate and transport of chlorinated ethenes in a complex groundwater system discharging to a stream in Wonju, Korea.

Chlorinated ethenes such as trichloroethylene (TCE) are common and persistent groundwater contaminants. If contaminated groundwater discharges to a stream, then stream water pollution near the contamination site also becomes a problem. In this respect, the fate and transport of chlorinated ethenes around a stream in an industrial complex were evaluated using the concentration of each component, and hydrogeochemical, microbial, and compound-specific carbon isotope data. Temporal and spatial monitoring reveal that a TCE plume originating from main and local source zones continues to be discharge

Concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers, polychlonnated biphenyls, and polychlorobiphenylols in serum from pregnant Faroese women and their children 7 years later.

The objective of this study was to assess blood concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and their polychlorobiphenylol (OH-PCB) metabolites in humans with a high seafood intake. Samples were obtained from pregnant women in the Faroe Islands in 1994-1995 and from their children at 7 years of age to examine maternal transfer of the compounds to their child, age-dependent metabolism, and temporal changes. Maternal serum was dominated by 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47), while 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-153) prevail

DFT-guided mixed-linker UiO-66 MOFs for selective SPE-LC-MS/MS determination of emerging organic pollutants.

BACKGROUND: Emerging organic pollutants (EOPs), such as bisphenol A (BPA), tetracycline (TC), and carbamazepine (CBZ), are widely detected in aquatic environments and pose significant risks due to their persistence and biological activity. Their trace-level occurrence in complex matrices requires highly sensitive and selective analytical methods. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is commonly used for sample preparation; however, conventional polymeric and silica-based sorbents often suffer from limited selectivity and strong matrix interferences. Although metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer tunab

Synergistic bioremediation of metolachlor-contaminated soil by Penicillium oxalicum MetF1 and earthworms: Enhanced degradation, microbial community restructuring, and ring-opening metabolic activation.

The chloroacetamide herbicide metolachlor (MET) is a widespread environmental contaminant posing risks to aquatic and soil ecosystems. Although the fungal strain Penicillium oxalicum MetF1 efficiently degrades MET in liquid culture, its performance in complex soil environments remains unexplored. Recognizing the multifunctional roles of earthworms as soil ecosystem engineers-including their capacity to modulate microbial activity and pollutant bioavailability-we incorporated Eisenia fetida into a synergistic bioremediation system with P. oxalicum MetF1 in MET-contaminated soil. The synergistic

Long-term leaching through clayey till of N,N-dimethylsulfamide, a Persistent and Mobile Organic Compound (PMOC).

Environmental pollution with Persistent and Mobile Organic Compounds (PMOC) from anthropogenic activities is an increasing cause for concern. These compounds are readily leached to groundwater aquifers and are likely to resist degradation, putting pressure on groundwater resources. Pesticides can form PMOCs upon degradation in the environment. The PMOC N,N-dimethylsulfamide (DMS) was the most frequently detected pesticide metabolite in Danish drinking water wells in 2020, although the pesticidal use of the last parent compound (tolylfluanid) ended in 2007. This study aimed to improve the under

Methanotrophs, Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b, sMMO, and their application to bioremediation.

One of the most problematic groups of the USEPA and EU priority pollutants are the halogenated organic compounds. These substances have a wide range of industrial applications, such as solvents and cleaners. Inadequate disposal techniques and accidental spillages have led to their detection in soil, groundwater, and river sediments. Persistence of these compounds in the environment has resulted from low levels of biodegradation due to chemical structural features that preclude or retard biological attack. Research has indicated the idea that treatment systems based on methanotrophic co-metabol

Exposure and effects assessment of persistent organohalogen contaminants in arctic wildlife and fish.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) encompass an array of anthropogenic organic and elemental substances and their degradation and metabolic byproducts that have been found in the tissues of exposed animals, especially POPs categorized as organohalogen contaminants (OHCs). OHCs have been of concern in the circumpolar arctic for decades. For example, as a consequence of bioaccumulation and in some cases biomagnification of legacy (e.g., chlorinated PCBs, DDTs and CHLs) and emerging (e.g., brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and in particular polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and perfluorin…

iTRAQ-based quantitative proteomics analysis of Sprague-Dawley rats liver reveals perfluorooctanoic acid-induced lipid metabolism and urea cycle dysfunction.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a typical C8 representative compound of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) widely used in industrial and domestic products. It is a persistent organic pollutant found in the environment as well as in the tissues of humans and wildlife. Despite emerging scientific and public interest, the precise mechanisms of PFOA toxicity remain unclear. In this study, male rats were exposed to 1.25, 5, and 20 mg PFOA/kg body weight/day for 14 days by gavage; food intake and bodyweight changes were recorded every day. After 14 days, blood was collected for se

Computational toxicology prioritization of CYP3A4 and DPP7 as candidate triclosan-relevant molecular targets in ulcerative colitis.

Triclosan (TCS), a synthetic broad-spectrum antimicrobial and novel persistent organic pollutant, is detected in over 75% of human urine samples, yet its molecular targets in ulcerative colitis (UC) remain unclear. We integrated network toxicology, multi-cohort machine learning, molecular docking, 100-ns all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, and single-cell transcriptomics to address this gap.Intersecting UC differentially expressed genes with database-derived TCS targets yielded 479 shared candidate targets; because these databases include indirect and probabilistic associations, this s

Rayon microfibers exacerbate the toxic effects of polychlorinated biphenyls on foot integrity and byssal performance in the mussel Mytilus coruscus.

Rayon microfibers (RY) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are common emerging contaminants in marine environments, and their ecological impacts have attracted increasing research attention. Although these contaminants frequently coexist and pose potential risks to aquatic organisms, their combined toxicity remains poorly understood. This research examined the effects of PCBs, RY, and their combined exposure on foot structure, byssus thread functionality, and the expression of byssus-related genes in the mussel Mytilus coruscus. Mussels were exposed for 14 days to PCBs at low (100 ng/L) and h

Effects of hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid and dimer acid on acute and chronic toxicity, bioconcentration, and oxidative damage in Oryzias melastigma.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are a persistent global contaminant. As regulations on legacy compounds such as perfluorooctanoic acid tighten, hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid (HFPO-TA) and dimer acid (HFPO-DA) have emerged as primary alternatives. This study comprehensively evaluated the acute toxicity, tissue bioconcentration, and oxidative stress mechanisms of these two emerging alternatives using Oryzias melastigma as a model organism. Acute toxicity assays demonstrated that HFPO-TA is significantly more lethal than HFPO-DA. The 96-hr median lethal concentration for HFPO-TA (130

A novel magnetic AC/bentonite/Fe3O4/CeO2 nanocomposite catalyst for photocatalytic degradation of persistent chlorinated pesticides in water.

Persistent organic pesticides (POPs), particularly chlorinated pesticides, represent a critical environmental threat due to their chemical stability, bioaccumulation potential, and resistance to conventional water-treatment methods. Herein, a rapid and cost-effective photocatalytic strategy is developed for the degradation of seventeen structurally diverse POPs in water under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at ambient temperature. A magnetic heterostructured nanocomposite consisting of activated carbon, derived from sugarcane bagasse, and bentonite, coupled with a magnetite/cerium oxide (Fe3O4/Ce

Combined exposure to nano-TiO₂ and carbamazepine exacerbates reproductive toxicity in mussels Mytilus coruscus by disrupting steroid hormone homeostasis.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-TiO₂) and carbamazepine (CBZ) are both emerging contaminants of concern in coastal environments. Current monitoring data indicate that nano-TiO₂ occur in nearshore seawater affected by land-based inputs, and CBZ is persistently detected in estuarine and nearshore waters; therefore, these contaminants may co-occur at a regional scale. In this study, the thick-shelled mussel (Mytilus coruscus) was used as a model organism. Nominal concentrations of nano-TiO₂ (100 μg/L) and CBZ (10 μg/L) were applied in single and combined exposure experiments over 14 days. Pa

Developmental and lifelong exposure to mercury chloride exacerbates cognitive and motor decline in aged mice.

Aging is a multifactorial biological process characterized by the progressive decline of cellular, tissue, and organ functions, leading to increased vulnerability to neurodegenerative disorders. Among the proposed mechanisms, the oxidative stress theory of aging remains one of the most widely accepted, emphasizing the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, particularly in the central nervous system (CNS). Mercury is a persistent environmental pollutant known to induce oxidative damage, but its contribution to age-related neuronal decline remains poorly understood. Our aim of this
