Trans women (TW) have a high prevalence of poor mental health. Gender-affirming treatments could reduce distress regarding their gender incongruity. However, psychiatric comorbidities might complicate the management or even confirmation of being transgender. We reported three TW with complex mental illnesses, including anxiety disorder with cultural explanation, neurodevelopmental disorders with cross-dressing, and severe personality disorder accompanied by major depression. All cases received both psychiatric and gender-affirming treatments, which demonstrated promising outcomes. Along with g

This study examines the respective morbid risk for psychiatric illness determined by the family history method in the first-degree relatives of medical controls and patients with delusional disorder (paranoid psychosis) and schizophrenia. The morbid risk for schizophrenia and schizoid-schizotypal personality disorder was significantly greater in the relatives of the schizophrenic patients than in those of the delusional disorder or medical control patients, but no difference in the risk for affective illness or alcoholism was found in the three groups of relatives. Paranoid personality disorde

Background/Objectives: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease associated with psychiatric burden, but longitudinal data on incident psychiatric outcomes remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate incident psychiatric disorders in adults with HS compared with matched non-HS controls and to assess sex-specific risk. Methods: We conducted a retrospective propensity score-matched cohort study using the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network. Adults with at least two HS diagnoses and no prior psychiatric diagnosis were compared with non-HS controls with repeated genera

A family history of psychiatric diseases was suggested as one risk factor for autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Our aim was to assess the association of paternal and maternal diagnosis of psychiatric disorders with the risk of ASD in offspring in Taiwan. We conducted a population-based case-control study. Using several linked national databases, we obtained 1,000,939 singleton birth records born between 2004 and 2008. We followed these children up to 2015 for cases of ASD, using diagnostic codes in the National Health Insurance databases. There were 8,933 ASD cases and each case was matched to

Cerebellar dysfunction plays a critical role in neurodevelopmental disorders with long-term behavioral and neuropsychiatric symptoms. A 43-year-old woman with a cerebellum arteriovenous malformation and history of behavioral dysregulation since childhood is described. After the rupture of the cerebellar malformation in adulthood, her behavior morphed into specific psychiatric symptoms and cognitive deficits occurred. The neuropsychological assessment evidenced impaired performance in attention, visuospatial, memory, and language domains. Moreover, psychiatric assessment indicated a borderline

Background/Objectives: Psychiatric conditions are highly prevalent and among the leading causes of disability worldwide. Comorbidities are common in psychiatric patients but are not adequately addressed in diagnostic manuals such as the DSM-5. Understanding the impact of comorbidities on patients' symptoms and brain activity could improve the personalization of therapeutic approaches, leading to better outcomes. Given the complexity of this task, a feasible strategy is to examine how comorbidities affect brain activity and a condition commonly observed in psychiatric patients, such as cognitiv

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of self-reported podiatric impairments and their effect on health status in persons with severe mental illness. A sample of psychiatric outpatients (N=309) underwent interviews assessing medical conditions and health status with the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 (SF-36). Podiatric health was assessed using nine items from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). Eighty percent of patients reported at least one podiatric problem. The most common problems were foot pain (48%), nail disorders (35%) and corns/calluses (28%). Pr

Increased levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) is associated with several psychiatric disorders. Demographic factors such as age and gender might affect this association, but the results are conflicting. The aim of this study was to explore a relationship between age, gender and hsCRP in an acute psychiatric inpatient population. We included 484 patients admitted to an acute psychiatric ward. Based on age distribution percentiles (25%, 50% and 75 %), we categorized patients into three age groups; ≦31 years old, 31-47 years old and ≧ 48 years old. Differences in serum levels of

Psychiatric disorders are among the leading contributors to the global burden of disease. Impaired emotion regulation has been hypothesized to be a transdiagnostic feature of psychiatric disorders, but this has not been proven across all classes of psychopathology. We sought to systematically review and meta-analyze emotion regulation impairment across major psychiatric disorders to determine if impairment is truly transdiagnostic. Selected studies compared healthy controls and individuals with a psychiatric disorder. Emotion regulation was assessed by the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Sc

OBJECTIVE: Comorbid psychiatric disorders negatively affect the survival rate of patients with some physical disorders. In liver transplant recipients, various psychiatric disorders have been identified as worsening prognosis. However, little is known about how the presence of any comorbid (overall) disorders affect the survival rate of transplant recipients. In this study, we examined the effect of overall comorbid psychiatric disorders on survival rate in liver transplant recipients.
METHODS: A total of 1006 recipients who underwent liver transplantation between September 1997 and July 2017

The authors examined the case of an adolescent patient with dissociative identity disorder secondary to psychological shock of a transplant rejection response. Psychiatric symptoms consisted of three components: visual hallucinations and delusions as a psychological defense against the anxiety of a transplant rejection; appearance of three personalities including proper self, the dead child (donor), and a prophet with strong predicting power; and a twilight state. These psychiatric symptoms may have been related to two psychological factors: immature personality characteristics formed during h

BACKGROUND: Impairments in social functioning are a common feature of psychiatric disorders. Game paradigms pose a unique way for studying how people make decisions in interpersonal contexts. In the last decade, researchers have started to use these paradigms to study social decision-making in patients with psychiatric disorders.
PURPOSE: The aim of this systematic literature review is to summarise the currently available evidence on the behaviour of patients with psychiatric disorders in the commonly used Ultimatum Game (UG).
METHOD: A systematic literature search including MEDLINE, PsycINF
