Synergistic effect of phytic acid and eggshell bio-fillers on the dual-phase fire-retardancy of intumescent coatings applied on cellulosic substrates.

Cellulosic substrates, including wood and thatch, have become icons for sustainable architecture and construction, however, they suffer from high flammability because of their inherent cellulosic composition. Current control measures for such hazards include applying intumescent fire-retardant (IFR) coatings that swell and form a char layer upon ignition, protecting the underlying substrate from burning. Typically, conventional IFR coatings are opaque and are made of halogenated compounds that release toxic fumes when ignited, compromising the roofing's aesthetic value and sustainability. In t

Optimizing nitrogen fertilization in maize: the impact of nitrification inhibitors, phosphorus application, and microbial interactions on enhancing nutrient efficiency and crop performance.

Despite the essential role of nitrogen fertilizers in achieving high crop yields, current application practices often exhibit low efficiency. Optimizing nitrogen (N) fertilization in agriculture is, therefore, critical for enhancing crop productivity while ensuring sustainable food production. This study investigates the effects of nitrification inhibitors (Nis) such as Dimethyl Pyrazole Phosphate (DMPP) and Dimethyl Pyrazole Fulvic Acid (DMPFA), plant growth-promoting bacteria inoculation, and phosphorus (P) application on the soil-plant-microbe system in maize. DMPFA is an organic nitrificat

Ursolic Acid Prevents Retinoic Acid-Induced Bone Loss in Rats.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of ursolic acid (UA) on mitigating retinoic acid (RA)-induced osteoporosis in rats. METHODS: Fifty female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into the control group (n=10) and the osteoporosis group (n=40). The 40 osteoporosis rats were induced by 75 mg/(kg•d) RA once daily for 2 weeks, and then were randomly assigned to vehicle control (model), low-, middle-, and high-dose UA [(UA-L, UA-M, UA-H; 30, 60, 120 mg/(kg•d), respectively] groups (10 rats each). UA were administered once daily to the rats from the 3rd weeks for up to 4 weeks by gavage. Bone tu

Histological and elemental analyses of impaired bone mineralization in klotho-deficient mice.

The klotho gene-deficient mouse is known as an animal model for an accelerated gerontic state, mimicking osteoporosis, skin atrophy, ectopic calcification, and gonadal dysplasia. To elucidate the influence of klotho deficiency on bone mineralization, we examined the ultrastructures of osteoblasts and bone matrices in addition to performing the elemental mapping of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium in the bone. Under anesthesia, 4- and 5-week-old klotho-deficient mice (klotho(-/-)mice) and their wild-type littermates were perfused with either 4% paraformaldehyde for light microscopic observati

A novel approach using protein-rich biomass as co-fermentation substrates to enhance phosphorus recovery from FePs-bearing sludge.

A novel approach for the enhancement of phosphorus (P) recovery from Fe bound P compounds (FePs)-bearing sludge by co-fermentation with protein-rich biomass (PRB) is reported. Four PRBs (silkworm chrysalis meal, fish meal, corn gluten meal, and soya bean meal) were used for co-fermentation. The results revealed that PRBs with strong surface hydrophobicity and loose structure favored the hydrolysis and acidogenesis processes. Sulfide produced by PRB could react with FePs to form FeS and promote P release. Due to the neutralization of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) by a relatively high concentratio

Phosphorus fertilization regimes and rates alter Cd extractability in rhizospheric soils and uptake in maize (Zea mays L.).

Understanding cadmium (Cd) extractability and transfer in soil-plant system is crucial for the evaluation of the remediation effect of Cd-contaminated soils. However, knowledge on the effects of different phosphorus (P) fertilizers on Cd uptake in plants, root morphology, and Cd extractability in rhizosphere soils remains very limited. In this study, a five-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the impacts of four P fertilizers (i.e. calcium superphosphate, calcium magnesium phosphate, monopotassium phosphate, and compound fertilizer) on Cd uptake in maize (Zea mays L.), root morphol

Determination of in situ ruminal degradation of phytate phosphorus from single and compound feeds in dairy cows using chemical analysis and near-infrared spectroscopy.

The ruminal degradation of P bound in phytate (InsP6) can vary between feeds, but data on ruminal degradation of InsP6 from different feedstuffs for cattle are rare. One objective of this study was to increase the data base on ruminal effective degradation of InsP6 (InsP6ED) and to assess if InsP6ED of compound feeds (CF) can be calculated from comprising single feeds. As a second objective, use of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to predict InsP6 concentrations was tested. Nine single feeds (maize, wheat, barley, faba beans, soybeans, soybean meal (SBM), rapeseed meal (RSM), sunflower meal (

New insights into globoids of protein storage vacuoles in wheat aleurone using synchrotron soft X-ray microscopy.

Mature developed seeds are physiologically and biochemically committed to store nutrients, principally as starch, protein, oils, and minerals. The composition and distribution of elements inside the aleurone cell layer reflect their biogenesis, structural characteristics, and physiological functions. It is therefore of primary importance to understand the mechanisms underlying metal ion accumulation, distribution, storage, and bioavailability in aleurone subcellular organelles for seed fortification purposes. Synchrotron radiation soft X-ray full-field imaging mode (FFIM) and low-energy X-ray

Efficient synthesis of sterically crowded biaryls by palladium-phosphinous acid-catalyzed cross-coupling of aryl halides and aryl grignards.

A series of sterically hindered biaryls have been obtained by palladium- and nickel-phosphinous acid-catalyzed Kumada-Corriu cross-coupling of ortho-substituted aryl halides and Grignard reagents. This method allows formation of di- and tri-ortho-substituted biaryls in 87-98% yield under mild reaction conditions even when electron-rich aryl chlorides are used. The reaction also proceeds with aryl iodides at -20 degrees C, and under these conditions, functional groups that are generally not compatible with Grignard reagents are tolerated.

Using solid-state 31P{19F} REDOR NMR to measure distances between a trifluoromethyl group and a phosphodiester in nucleic acids.

REDOR is a solid-state NMR technique frequently applied to biological structure problems. Through incorporation of phosphorothioate groups in the nucleic acid backbone and mono-fluorinated nucleotides, 31P{19F} REDOR has been used to study the binding of DNA to drugs and RNA to proteins through the detection of internuclear distances as large as 13-14 A. In this work, 31P{19F} REDOR is further refined for use in nucleic acids by the combined use of selective placement of phosphorothioate groups and the introduction of nucleotides containing trifluoromethyl (-CF3) groups. To ascertain the REDOR

Correlation of phosphorus-31 magnetic resonance spectroscopy and morphologic findings in Alzheimer's disease.

Senile plaques (SPs), especially, and neurofibrillary tangles are important pathologic markers for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but neither is pathognomonic for AD. We hypothesize that elevations in levels of phosphomonoesters, precursors of membrane phospholipids, occur early in the pathogenesis of AD and precede the appearance of SPs. In contrast, elevations in levels of phosphodiesters, breakdown products of phospholipids, reflect degeneration of neural membranes and will correlate with the appearance of SPs. Correlative phosphorus-31 magnetic resonance spectroscopy and morpho

Biotransformation of aquaculture wastewater into aquatic feed protein source: Chlorella sorokiniana nutritional value and safety risk assessment.

Aquaculture wastewater contains high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, which can be used as nutrients for microalgal growth. In this study, the ability of Chlorella sorokiniana (C. sorokiniana) to purify aquaculture wastewater from an intensive recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) carp sp. farm was evaluated. We then assessed the safety risk of C. sorokiniana cultured from aquaculture wastewater and conducted an 8-week fish feeding trial to evaluate its nutritional value as a feed protein source. The three diets were supplemented with 0 (FM, control), 5% (MM5) or 15% (MM15

Separation of metals and phosphorus from incinerated sewage sludge ash.

Microbial acidification of incinerated sewage sludge ash and dissolution of metals from the acidified ash were investigated using a semi-batch reactor at different solid retention times (SRTs). The average pH values ranged from 0.91 to 1.2 at SRTs longer than 10 days, whereas the reduction of SRT to 4 days resulted in an increase in the pH value to about 2. The dissolution efficiencies of Al, As, Cd, Cu and Mn were greater than 60% at a SRT of 4 days. Moreover, the effect of pH on precipitation of metals and P (dissolution of 80%) in the filtrate removed from the acidified sewage ash suspensio

The impact of alum addition on organic P transformations in poultry litter and litter-amended soil.

Poultry litter treatment with alum (Al(2)(SO(4))(3) . 18H(2)O) lowers litter phosphorus (P) solubility and therefore can lower litter P release to runoff after land application. Lower P solubility in litter is generally attributed to aluminum-phosphate complex formation. However, recent studies suggest that alum additions to poultry litter may influence organic P mineralization. Therefore, alum-treated and untreated litters were incubated for 93 d to assess organic P transformations during simulated storage. A 62-d soil incubation was also conducted to determine the fate of incorporated litter

A biorefinery for conversion of citrus peel waste into essential oils, pectin, fertilizer and succinic acid via different fermentation strategies.

A process for the valorization of citrus peel waste (CPW) has been developed aiming to produce succinic acid and a series of added-value products through the biorefinery platform. CPW was subject to physicochemical and biological treatment to isolate essential oils (0.43%) and pectin (30.53%) as extractable products, pretreating the material for subsequent production of succinic acid that enabled application of remaining biorefinery residues (BR) as fertilizer substitute. Cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin contents of CPW accounted for 22.45%, 8.05% and 0.66% respectively, while acid hydrolys
