A survey on the influence of CYBATHLON on the development and acceptance of advanced assistive technologies.

BACKGROUND: Advanced assistive technologies (AAT) aim to exploit the vast potential of technological developments made in the past decades to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities. Combining complex robotic technologies with the unique needs of people with disabilities requires a strong focus on user-centered design to ensure that the AAT appropriately addresses the daily life struggles of target users. The CYBATHLON aims to promote this mindset by empowering the AAT target users ("pilots") to compete on race tracks that represent approximations of daily life obstacles. The o…

Restricted versus liberal intraoperative benzodiazepine use in cardiac anaesthesia for reducing delirium (B-Free Pilot): a pilot, multicentre, randomised, cluster crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is common after cardiac surgery and is associated with adverse outcomes. Perioperative benzodiazepine use is associated with delirium and is common during cardiac surgery, which may increase the risk of postoperative delirium. We undertook a pilot study to inform the feasibility of a large randomised cluster crossover trial examining whether an institutional policy of restricted benzodiazepine administration during cardiac surgery (compared with liberal administration) would reduce delirium. METHODS: We conducted a two-centre, pilot, randomised cluster crossover trial wit

Effects of Uro-Vaxom vs. placebo on the urinary tract microbiome in individuals with spinal cord injury in a randomized controlled pilot trial (Uro-Vaxom pilot).

Individuals with spinal cord injury/disease (SCI/D) have a high incidence of urinary tract infections (UTI). This randomized controlled pilot trial investigated the effect of an immunomodulator (Uro-Vaxom) versus a placebo on the urinary tract microbiome of individuals with SCI/D to inform the design of a larger trial. Twenty participants with SCI/D undergoing primary rehabilitation were randomized to receive either Uro-Vaxom or a placebo for three months (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04049994 08/08/2019). Urine was collected at baseline, immediately post-treatment, and three months post-treatment. D

Continuous wound infiltration versus epidural analgesia for midline abdominal incisions - a randomized-controlled pilot trial (Painless-Pilot trial; DRKS Number: DRKS00008023).

OBJECTIVES: To test the feasibility of a randomized controlled study design comparing epidural analgesia (EDA) with continuous wound infiltration (CWI) in respect to postoperative complications and mobility to design a future multicentre randomized controlled trial. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS: CWI has been developed to address drawbacks of EDA. Previous studies have established the equivalent analgesic potential of CWI compared to EDA. This is a single centre, non-blinded pilot randomized controlled trial at a tertiary surgical centre. Patients undergoing elective non-colorectal surgery vi

Comparison of midwifery care to medical care in hospitals in the Quebec pilot projects study: clinical indicators. L'Equipe dEvaluation des Projets-Pilotes Sages-Femmes.

The purpose of this study was to compare indicators of process and outcome of midwifery services provided in the Quebec pilot projects to those associated with standard hospital-based medical services. Women receiving each type of care (961 per group) were matched on the basis of socio-demographic characteristics and level of obstetrical risk. We found midwifery care to be associated with less obstetrical intervention and a reduction in selected indicators of maternal morbidity (caesarean section and severe perineal injury). For neonatal outcome indicators, midwifery care was associated with a

Preliminary Evaluation of Implementation and Effectiveness of the Relational Suicide Intervention Pilot.

Although primary interventions for suicidal ideation typically focus on individuals, couple-based clinical interventions for this population remain underdeveloped. Despite emerging evidence suggesting that relational interventions may improve suicidal ideation, currently only one couple-based intervention has preliminary evidence, and it was specifically designed for military couples. This gap highlights the need for systemic couple-based interventions in outpatient settings. We piloted the Relational Suicide Intervention (RSI), a four-session intervention grounded in Integrative Systemic Ther

Salivary oxytocin and testosterone in empathic stress responding: a pilot study.

Suffering the stress of others (termed empathic stress or stress contagion) may affect an individual's health and well-being. To understand the underlying hormonal processes of empathic stress, N = 108 opposite-sex dyads were tested, with one dyad partner passively observing the other undergoing a standardized psychosocial laboratory stressor. A positive link between oxytocin release and empathic stress response was hypothesized, while a negative relationship was expected for testosterone release. Associations of observer oxytocin and testosterone levels with two components of empathic stress

Synuclein Deposition in Idiopathic Small-Fiber Neuropathy: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Small-fiber neuropathy (SFN) is a heterogeneous disorder with many established causes, but around half of all cases are idiopathic after extensive investigation. Recent pathologic studies in Parkinson disease have revealed deposition of ⍺-synuclein in small sensory and autonomic nerve terminals in skin biopsy specimens, suggesting that ⍺-synuclein deposition may cause SFN in patients with systemic synucleinopathies. Our aim was to investigate whether ⍺-synuclein deposition may also underlie cases of SFN previously classified as idiopathic. METHODS: We co-stained skin biopsy
