Fetal hemodynamics and placental histopathology in Down syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between Doppler patterns in fetuses with Down syndrome (DS) and their placental histopathologic findings. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed by collecting data from medical records of singleton pregnancies between January 2014 and January 2022, whose fetuses had a confirmed diagnosis of DS either prenatally or postnatally. Placental histopathology, maternal characteristics, and prenatal ultrasound (biometric parameters and umbilical artery [UA] Doppler) were evaluated. RESULTS: Of 69 eligible pregnant women, 61 met the inclusio

Characterizing placental pericytes: Hypoxia and proangiogenic signalling.

INTRODUCTION: Pericytes wrap microvessels and interact with endothelial cells to regulate vascular growth. Though pericyte dropout has been reported in pathological human placentae and mouse models of placental pathology, there has been limited investigation of the role and function of placental pericytes in vascular health and pathology. This study aimed to investigate the angiogenic potential of human placental pericytes relative to other villous cell populations. METHODS: Primary human placental pericytes, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), and BeWo cells ( ± 20 μM forskolin)

Is There a Baby in the Lung? A Case of Placental Transmogrification of the Lung.

Pulmonary nodules are commonly encountered in pulmonary practice. Etiologies could include infectious, inflammatory, and malignant. Placental transmogrification of the lung is an extremely rare etiology of pulmonary nodules. Such condition often presents as unilateral lesions in asymptomatic men. In general, such nodules are generally stable and grow extremely slowly. We highlight an unusual case of placental transmogrification of the lung (PLC) identified in a young female. The patient's bilateral nodules were larger than what has been previously cited in the literature and exhibited growth o

Giant placental chorioangioma: A rare case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Chorioangioma is benign, non-trophoblastic vascular neoplasms of the placenta with an estimated incidence of 1 %. It originates from placental blood vessels. Giant chorioangiomas, larger than 4 cm in diameter, are rare with an incidence ranging between 1/3500 and 1/9000 pregnancies. Giant chorioangiomas easily detected by prenatal ultrasound and are associated with a series of pregnancy and fetal complications. CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old multigravida woman, with twin pregnancy presented with notation of reduced fetal movement. On sonographic examination, fir

Human Placental Schistosomiasis-A Systematic Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Schistosome egg deposition in pregnant women may affect the placenta of infected mothers and cause placental schistosomiasis (PS). Histopathological examination of placental tissue is an inadequate detection method due to low sensitivity. So far, there has not been any systematic review on PS. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search on PubMed, EMBASE, and Medline and included all publications that reported microscopically confirmed cases of PS, as well as the relevant secondary literature found in the citations of the primarily included publications. RESULTS: Out of

Large placental chorioangioma with maternal and perinatal morbidity.

INTRODUCTION: Placental chorioangioma is a benign placenta tumour. Majority of cases, the placental chorioangioma are small and no maternal and fetal complications. We highlight a case diagnosed with large placental chorioangioma with an intrapartum event associated with significant maternal and perinatal morbidity. METHOD: A 38-year-old woman, Gravida 3 Para 1, with one previous miscarriage, presented with preterm labour at 33 weeks gestation. Antenatally, she was referred to a feto-maternal specialist for finding a placental tumour size 12 × 10 cm. Features are consistent with placental cho

Human Cytomegalovirus Replication Enhanced By Placental MicroRNAs.

Placental trophoblasts constitute the interface between the fetal and maternal environments and physically prevent maternal-fetal viral transmission. However, congenital human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection in the early stages of pregnancy results in severe symptoms in the fetus. HCMV is the most common causative agent of intrauterine infection. To clarify the etiology of congenital HCMV infection, we focused on how the placental environment affects HCMV infection. We investigated the role of microRNAs (miRNAs), which are highly and specifically expressed in placental trophoblasts. The trans

CITED2 is a conserved regulator of the uterine-placental interface.

Establishment of the hemochorial uterine-placental interface requires exodus of trophoblast cells from the placenta and their transformative actions on the uterus, which represent processes critical for a successful pregnancy, but are poorly understood. We examined the involvement of CBP/p300-interacting transactivator with glutamic acid/aspartic acid-rich carboxyl-terminal domain 2 (CITED2) in rat and human trophoblast cell development. The rat and human exhibit deep hemochorial placentation. CITED2 was distinctively expressed in the junctional zone (JZ) and invasive trophoblast cells of the …

Placental syndromes and long-term risk of hypertension.

Higher blood pressure prior to pregnancy is associated with increased risk of placental abruption, hypertension and preeclampsia, preterm delivery and fetal growth restriction. These conditions are jointly termed placental syndromes as they are characterised by impaired placentation and early placental vascularization. Placental syndromes are associated with an increased maternal risk of progression to hypertension and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in later life. Women affected by both a clinical placental syndrome and with evidence of placental maternal vascular malperfusion (MVM) have a parti…

Placental weight percentile curves in a Danish population.

INTRODUCTION: The role of the placenta is to transport oxygen and nutrients to the fetus, and a well-functioning placenta is vital to fetal health. Our aim was to develop placental weight percentile curves adjusted by gestational age, and stratified by major maternal comorbidities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was a population study in a Danish cohort. Data was drawn from The Medical Birth Register and the National Patient Register. We included singleton births with a gestational age of 22 + 0 to 42 + 6 weeks. We excluded multiple pregnancies, stillbirths and retained placentas. A total of

The maternal microbiome promotes placental development in mice.

The maternal microbiome is an important regulator of gestational health, but how it impacts the placenta as the interface between mother and fetus remains unexplored. Here we show that the maternal gut microbiota supports placental development in mice. Depletion of the maternal gut microbiota restricts placental growth and impairs feto-placental vascularization. The maternal gut microbiota modulates metabolites in the maternal and fetal circulation. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) stimulate angiogenesis-related tube formation by endothelial cells and prevent abnormalities in placental vascular

The effect of endocrine-disrupting chemicals on placental development.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) or endocrine disruptors are substances that are either naturally occurring or artificial and are released into the natural environment. Humans are exposed to EDCs through ingestion, inhalation, and skin contact. Many everyday household items, such as plastic bottles and containers, the liners of metal food cans, detergents, flame retardants, food, gadgets, cosmetics, and pesticides, contain endocrine disruptors. Each hormone has a unique chemical makeup and structural attributes. The way that endocrine hormones connect to receptors is described as a "lock

IL11 activates the placental inflammasome to drive preeclampsia.

INTRODUCTION: Preeclampsia is a life-threatening disorder of pregnancy unique to humans. Interleukin (IL)11 is elevated in serum from pregnancies that subsequently develop early-onset preeclampsia and pharmacological elevation of IL11 in pregnant mice causes the development of early-onset preeclampsia-like features (hypertension, proteinuria, and fetal growth restriction). However, the mechanism by which IL11 drives preeclampsia is unknown. METHOD: Pregnant mice were administered PEGylated (PEG)IL11 or control (PEG) from embryonic day (E)10-16 and the effect on inflammasome activation, systol

The Association between Placental Abruption and Platelet Indices.

Objective: Placental abruption (PA) is an obstetric emergency. This study investigated the use of platelet indices in PA in its early stages to determine if it could aid in diagnosis. Materials and Methods: Sixty-two pregnant women with PA and 130 pregnant women who delivered due to idiopathic preterm delivery were included in this case-control study. Blood samples including platelet indices, biochemical, and coagulation parameters were obtained before cesarean section. Maternal and neonatal outcomes were recorded. Results: There was no significant difference between the groups as to hemoglobi

Gaps in the knowledge of thyroid hormones and placental biology†.

Thyroid hormones (THs) are required for the growth and development of the fetus, stimulating anabolism, and oxygen consumption from the early stages of pregnancy to the period of fetal differentiation close to delivery. Maternal changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis are also well known. In contrast, several open questions remain regarding the relationships between the placenta and the maternal and fetal TH systems. The exact mechanism by which the placenta participates in regulating the TH concentration in the fetus and mother and the role of TH in the placenta are still poorly st

Criteria for placental examination for obstetrical and neonatal providers.

Pathologic examination of the placenta can provide insight into likely (and unlikely) causes of antepartum and intrapartum events, diagnoses with urgent clinical relevance, prognostic information for mother and infant, support for practice evaluation and improvement, and insight into advancing the sciences of obstetrics and neonatology. Although it is true that not all placentas require pathologic examination (although alternative opinions have been expressed), prioritization of placentas for pathologic examination should be based on vetted indications such as maternal comorbidities or pregnan

[A pregnant woman with gastric cancer and placental involvement].

BACKGROUND: About 200 pregnant women in the Netherlands are yearly diagnosed with cancer. Pregnant women with cancer are often diagnosed later than non-pregnant women because symptoms of cancer are common during pregnancy and may elude suspicion. We report a patient with gastric carcinoma masquerading as hyperemesis gravidarum. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 39-year-old pregnant woman was admitted at 25 weeks' gestation for the evaluation of persistent nausea, vomiting and weight loss (29 kg) since the beginning of her pregnancy. A presumptive diagnosis of hyperemesis gravidarum was made. Endoscopic exa

Placental transcriptomic signatures of spontaneous preterm birth.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous preterm birth accounts for most preterm births and leads to significant morbidity in the newborn and childhood period. This subtype of preterm birth represents an increasing proportion of all preterm births when compared with medically indicated preterm birth, yet it is understudied in omics analyses. The placenta is a key regulator of fetal and newborn health, and the placental transcriptome can provide insight into pathologic changes that lead to spontaneous preterm birth. OBJECTIVE: This analysis aimed to identify genes for which placental expression was associated
