Increased human-animal interface & emerging zoonotic diseases: An enigma requiring multi-sectoral efforts to address.

Increased human-animal interfaces impose threats on human life by creating scope for the emergence and resurgence of many infectious diseases. Over the last two decades, emergence of novel viral diseases such as SARS, influenza A/H1N1(09) pdm; MERS; Nipah virus disease; Ebola haemorrhagic fever and the current COVID-19 has resulted in massive outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics thereby causing profound losses of human life, health and economy. The current COVID-19 pandemic has affected more than 200 countries, reporting a global case load of 167,878,000 with 2 per cent mortality as on May 26, 2

High rates of metallo-beta-lactamase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in Greece--a review of the current evidence.

For the last four years Greece has faced a large number of infections, mainly in the intensive care units (ICU), due to carbapenem-resistant, VIM-1-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae. The proportion of imipenem-resistant K. pneumoniae has increased from less than 1% in 2001, to 20% in isolates from hospital wards and to 50% in isolates from ICUs in 2006. Likewise, in 2002, these strains were identified in only three hospitals, whereas now they are isolated in at least 25 of the 40 hospitals participating in the Greek Surveillance System. This situation seems to be due to the spread of the blaVIM-

Does convective dialysis therapy applied daily approach renal blood purification?

Outcome studies in dialysis have generally failed to show an impact of changes in membrane flux or biocompatibility, and only dose increases up to a certain level have been shown to improve survival significantly. However, to see an effect of a potentially improved dialysis treatment, all available factors that make dialysis more physiological may need to be combined. A membrane that mimics the glomerular basement membrane in being hemocompatible, having a high hydraulic permeability and a generous sieving, yet not leading to albumin loss could be used. The dialysis fluid composition could be

Integrated systems integrating self-care: Supporting the prevention and mitigation of team member burnout and compassion fatigue.

INTRODUCTION: Health care providers are among the highest risk professionals in Western culture(s) for burnout and compassion fatigue (BO/CF). Although they report being wholly committed to what they do, they are often overwhelmed by the intensity and volume of their clinical responsibilities and patient panels, workplace and interdisciplinary politics, administrative demands, and a tendency to underreport personal struggles or seek help. Trends show, too, that these sequelae are becoming even more prevalent-not less-over recent years. METHOD: After reviewing literature for this conceptual ar

Systemic and organizational barriers to primary chronic disease prevention: a qualitative study of public health organizations in Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Public health organizations in Canada play a central role in chronic disease prevention (CDP) but face persistent challenges, including system restructuring, persistent underfunding and shifting policy priorities. The growing complexity of these issues warrants qualitative insight to complement quantitative reports capturing CDP organizations' perspectives. METHODS: The Public Health Organizational Capacity Study (PHORCAST) is a repeat Canada-wide census of public health organizations engaged in primary CDP at national, provincial, territorial and regional population levels. Asthma Care in Resource-Limited Settings: Closing the Treatment Gap Through Access, Innovation, and Action.

Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide, yet its burden falls most heavily on people living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where the majority of asthma-related deaths occur. This inequity is driven largely by systemic barriers: the limited availability and frequent unaffordability of inhaled corticosteroids, weak primary care infrastructure, diagnostic gaps, over-reliance on reliever medication and oral steroids, and environmental exposures that worsen disease. The result is a striking paradox, because the tools needed to control asthma are relatively inexpens

Assessing the relationship between the rule of law and health-related indicators: Evidence from an ecological analysis of 120 countries.

OBJECTIVES: Health outcomes differ widely across countries, influenced by socioeconomic and institutional conditions. While social determinants are well studied, the role of legal and governance structures is less understood. Examining the rule of law may clarify how foundational institutions shape population health and health system performance. The aim of this study is to examine the association between the rule of law and key health outcomes, while accounting for other socioeconomic determinants. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional ecological study. METHODS: This study analyzed data from 120 co

Sheep and goat pox in Greece (2024-2025). A political economy, public policy, and moral-philosophical analysis of a category A epizootic.

The 2024-2025 sheep and goat pox (SGP) epidemic in Greece exposed a structural paradox at the heart of Category A disease governance. the stricter the legal obligations, the weaker the individual incentive to comply. Over fifteen months, 1905 farms were confirmed positive across more than a dozen regional units, and weekly new confirmations exceeded 100 in the autumn of 2025, more than a year after the first confirmed case. This paper argues that the outbreak trajectory cannot be understood through epidemiological models alone. It is co-produced by strategic behaviour, limits on administrative

Quantifying the impact of health service delivery barriers on access to healthcare: a case study of antiretroviral therapy in Mali.

Achieving universal health coverage is a key component of the Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on equitable access to quality health services and minimising financial hardship. While strategies often target the demand-side, supply-side barriers such as travel time and facility-level constraints are often overlooked. Accurately quantifying who is affected by these barriers and identifying their locations and specific barriers is critical to improving service delivery. This study examines these barriers in Mali, a country with significant health system challenges exacerbated by high ferti

A national framework for transition to precision medicine.

Precision medicine (PM) is transforming healthcare by offering tailored interventions that address individual variability, transforming patient care and outcomes. PM is based on providing health-oriented services according to genetic characteristics, individual and family medical history, lifestyle, place of residence, and other personalized characteristics. This study aims to establish an appropriate framework for implementing PM in Iran. First, the global transition framework to PM was drawn by a systematic review, and then a framework for transition to PM in Iran was drawn by a case study t

Self-spoliation and forms of resistance in total institutions: an exploration of time and space in an Albanian communist regime internment camp.

The paper explores the daily life within Albanian internment camps during Enver Hoxha's prolonged communist regime, covering the period from 1944 to 1985. Extensive in-depth interviews with former internees underpin the research, which investigates the multifaceted strategies employed by these captives to resist the totalitarian obliteration of time and space, inherent in total institutions. These camps were not merely sites of physical isolation but were ideologically conceived as instruments of political repression, mirroring the Soviet Gulag system. The importance of community relationships

[PASS units: mechanisms for delivering healthcare to underserved populations. The example of the Hôtel-Dieu PASS, Paris].

The 1998 French law on combating exclusion established PASS units (Permanences d'Accès aux Soins de Santé, or Healthcare Access Points) to guarantee access to healthcare for all, including people in precarious situations. PASS centers aim to address the social, economic, administrative, and linguistic barriers that prevent vulnerable populations from accessing the healthcare system. This article provides an overview of how PASS operate in France and describes the PASS at Hôtel-Dieu in Paris (Public Hospitals of Paris). This PASS offers patients a holistic approach that includes medical care, ps

Financing immunisation in Kenya: examining bottlenecks in health sector planning and budgeting at the decentralised level.

BACKGROUND: Decentralisation has increasingly been adopted by countries as an important health sector reform aimed at increasing community participation in decision making while enhancing swift response at decentralised levels, to accelerate the attainment of health system goals. Kenya adopted a devolved system of government where health services delivery became a function of the 47 semi-autonomous county governments with planning and budgeting functions practised at both levels of government. This study sought to explore challenges facing health sector planning and budgeting and how they affe

Medical debt during epidemics: A case for resolving the situation in low- and middle-income countries such as Kenya.

This paper evaluates the problem of medical debt in Kenya during the COVID-19 pandemic. The medical debt problem is compounded during pandemics such as COVID-19 when patients seek treatment and end up in insurmountable debt because illnesses related to the pandemic are not covered by the Kenyan National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), the public health coverage body under government control. As a result, discharged patients may be detained in hospitals and dead bodies are locked away in mortuaries, until relatives and friends fundraise and clear the bills. Apart from causing vulnerability, fear,

"Even if you have the right, it won't be an easy path": Challenges and potentials of primary health care for legal abortion care in Brazil - a qualitative study.

Access to legally permitted abortion depends not only on the legal framework, but also on policy implementation, health system organisation, and professional practices. In Brazil, abortion is legally permitted in specific circumstances, but access remains highly limited. This qualitative study aimed to understand how Primary Health Care (PHC) professionals in São Paulo deal with cases eligible for abortion in everyday practice, focusing on conditions that constrain or enable the realisation of reproductive rights. Thirteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with professionals engaged wi

Advocacy 101 for the Early-Career Arthroplasty Surgeon: Payment, Policy, and Professional Sustainability.

Modern hip and knee arthroplasty surgeons graduate prepared to manage complex deformity, revision surgery, complications, and high-volume clinical practice but often receive little formal preparation for the payment and policy systems that determine whether that care remains accessible and sustainable. For early-career surgeons, this gap between clinical work and reimbursement reality can feel confusing, frustrating, and outside their control. Yet, payment policy directly shapes patient access, practice viability, workforce morale, and professional autonomy. This primer provides an "Advocacy 1
