BACKGROUND: A hemodialysis arteriovenous fistula (AVF) requires surgical modification in patients with cardiac overload or dialysis access-associated steal syndrome (DASS). Creation of an artificial stenosis (banding) within the AVF may be used, but this technique lacks the guidance of objective parameters. The aim of this pilot study was to identify indicators that reflect AVF flow in dialysis patients with either access-related cardiac overload (CO) or DASS requiring corrective surgery.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of ureteral Dacron-covered metallic stents in the management of malignant ureteral obstruction.
METHODS: Covered metallic stents were placed unilaterally using a percutaneous approach in an antegrade fashion into nine ureters of 8 patients with bilateral malignant ureteral obstruction. The contralateral kidneys were drained by percutaneous nephrostomy in 7 patients. The primary diagnoses were rectal cancer in 5 patients and cervical, bladder, and prostate cancers in the remaining cases.

Dual-lumen Dacron-cuffed silicone hemodialysis catheters placed percutaneously under fluoroscopic control have been used by us in 200 patients since July 1986. A total of 246 catheters were placed in 4 years, of which 172 were for long-term hemodialysis in place of prosthetic tube bridge arteriovenous shunts. One-year catheter survival estimate by Kaplan-Meier life table was 57 per cent, and mean survival estimate was 16.3 months. Since adopting a policy of immediate operation on patients with acute dissection of the ascending aorta, 42 men and 6 women (ages 18-67 years) have been managed surgically. A review has been made of 100 patients having repair of transposition of the great arteries during a six-year period. The overall hospital mortality was 12%. In uncomplicated cases with an intact ventricular septum it was 7%. Late complications have presented a significant problem and include caval inflow stenosis, pulmonary venous obstruction, dysrhythmias and tricuspid incompetence. The changes in operative techniques to overcome them are discussed.

Plastic pollution is a global challenge due to the persistence of synthetic polymers such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and the limited efficiency of current recycling strategies. While microbial biodegradation is a promising alternative, the relatively recent introduction of plastics has constrained microbial evolutionary adaptation and enzymatic efficiency. In this study, a PET-associated bacterial strain was isolated from Icelandic soil, identified as Lysinibacillus sp. via 16S rRNA sequencing, and evaluated through growth assays, proteomics, in silico screening, and surface imaging.
