Ketamine hydrochloride, used during glucose or lactose tolerance tests to aid restraint of rhesus and stumptail macaques unconditioned to handling, prevented the establishment of definitive baseline plasma glucose tolerance curves from which meaningful interpretations could be derived. Repetition of the tests after the animals were restraint-chair conditioned provided clear baseline control data. It is suggested that ketamine might invalidate those carbohydrate tolerance tests which are based on the absorption of glucose from the gastrointestinal tract.

Female rhesus monkeys and marmosets were fed a diet containing blighted potatoes (Phytophthora infestans) at a level of 10g/kg per day for at least two weeks prior to breeding and six weeks following conception in order to gain additional information on the association of blighted potatoes and the development of anencephaly and spina bifida in primate species. Anxious temperament (AT) is a nonhuman primate phenotype that models childhood behavioral inhibition, a prominent risk factor for anxiety disorders and stress-related psychopathology. To understand its earliest antecedents, we characterized AT's developmental trajectory over the first year of life. Infant monkeys (n = 35, 24 females) were longitudinally phenotyped for AT by assessing threat-related increases in freezing behavior, reductions in coo-calling, and increases in circulating cortisol at 1.5, 6, 12, 24, and 52 weeks.
