Fabrication of Low-Cost and Customizable Planar Electrochemical Devices Using Multi-Material 3D Printing and Platinum Leaves.

This paper introduces a novel method for producing planar electrochemical devices by combining multi-material 3D printing with metal leaves (3D-MLEs). The fabrication process is based on the use of two polymeric materials, polylactic acid (PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL), leveraging their different melting points. The approach exploits the thermoadhesive properties of polyesters, which can act as bonding layers upon heating, enabling a direct-writing and low-step fabrication strategy. The device was fabricated using a dual-extruder 3D printer to produce a PLA support containing PCL tracks, fol…

4D printing of a multi-transitioning shape memory polymer with a recovery onset towards precision endovascular embolization.

Practical use of shape memory polymers (SMPs) in endovascular embolization is often limited by their reliance on external triggers not easily applicable within the vascular environment. Addressing this, we introduce digital light 4D printing of an SMP that leverages naturally occurring physiological stimuli (body temperature and hydration) to initiate shape transformations. This SMP, termed PGDA-PUA-PAA, is photo-crosslinked from a resin consisting of poly(glycerol dodecanoate acrylate) (PGDA) oligomer, 10-undecenoic acid (UA), and acrylic acid (AA) monomers. It features dual-transition temper…

Rewritable, Stable, and Precise Optical Printing on Organohydrogel via Confining Dynamic Covalent Bond Exchange Between Crystalline Microdomains.

Optical printing on soft materials offers significant advantages for spatiotemporally controlled patterning in adaptive optics, information encryption, and reconfigurable devices. However, current strategies face challenges in achieving precise and rewritable pattern control with long-term stability due to uncontrolled diffusion kinetics of reactive species and structural instability upon stimulus removal. Here, we design a crystal-restricted dynamic organohydrogel that achieves precise optical patterning via confining dynamic covalent bond exchange between crystalline microdomains. These micr…

Post-Printing Manipulation of Material Mechanical Properties via Synergistic Engineering of Dynamic Polymer Network and Phase Separation.

The coupling of 3D printing process constraints and material molecular design makes it difficult to simultaneously achieve sophisticated structural fidelity and desirable mechanical performance. Topological reconfiguration of dynamic covalent polymer networks imparts materials with the capability to modulate their properties as needed post fabrication. However, prior studies had only achieved a limited modulation range because material properties depend solely on the polymer network structure. Herein, we introduce phase separation into a 3D printable dynamic covalent polymer network to enable …

Application-matched point-of-care 3D printing of functionalized polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composites for patient-specific craniomaxillofacial implants.

BACKGROUND: Native polyetheretherketone (PEEK) exhibits limitations in mechanical strength, radiographic visibility, and bioactivity for craniomaxillofacial (CMF) applications. This proof-of-concept study establishes the feasibility of point-of-care (POC) manufacturing for three functionalized PEEK composites for patient-specific CMF implants using a high-temperature material extrusion (MEX) system, with application-specific material selection to overcome these limitations. METHODS: Carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK (CFR-PEEK), barium sulfate-filled PEEK (BaSO₄-PEEK), and biphasic calcium phosphat

Gel-Based 3D Food Printing for Dysphagia Management: Advances in Personalized Nutrition, Texture Control, and Clinical Translation.

Dysphagia and age-related oral processing limitations are rising with population aging and the growing burden of neurological diseases. Texture-modified diets remain the most common non-pharmacological intervention, yet conventional pureeing and thickening often yield meals with low visual appeal, variable textures, and diluted nutrient density, which contribute to reduced intake and malnutrition risk. Extrusion-based three-dimensional food printing, especially when combined with gel-derived edible inks, offers a digital route to standardize geometry, portioning, and texture while enabling ind…

Is Point of Care Three-Dimensional Printing of Polyaryletherketone Triflange Cups Feasible for Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty?

BACKGROUND: Titanium three-dimensional (3D) printed triflange cups are an established treatment option for severe pelvic discontinuity, but are costly and, when produced offsite, involve weeks of surgical delay. Three-dimensional printing of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) at the point of care (POC) has recently been 510(k) cleared by the Food and Drug Administration for cranioplasty to reduce implant cost and time to treatment. We asked in this pilot study whether 3D-printed triflange cups from high-strength polyaryletherketone (PAEK) polymers like PEEK could be produced with sufficient strength …

Shaping the future of spinal implants: advancing bioactive composites with 3D printing for next-generation surgical care.

The evolution of spinal implant materials must keep pace with advances in our understanding of bone biomechanics and changing clinical demands in spine surgery. While early innovations primarily addressed trauma and spinal deformities using titanium alloys as the gold standard, an aging population has led to an increasing detection of osteoporosis and metastatic spine disease. These conditions fundamentally alter bone quality and mechanical behaviour and pose significant challenges for traditional metallic implants. These are not only due to stress shielding and increased risk of failure in co

Development of a Tunable Dextran-PCL Biomaterial Photoink for High-Resolution DLP 3D Printing in Biomedical Applications.

Digital light processing (DLP) is a technique that offers higher printing speeds and high spatial resolution compared to other additive manufacturing techniques. However, in biomedical applications, the biomaterials used do not provide a good balance between biocompatibility, mechanical performance, and controlled degradation. To overcome these limitations, this study aims to develop a biomaterial photoink formulation using two FDA-approved polymers. Dextran, which has high biocompatibility, was modified with glycidyl methacrylate to introduce photoreactive groups, and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PC…

Solvent-Rich Pre-Coagulation Bath for Tunable Liquid-State Fusion Enables Robust Two-Step Polymer Embedded Printing.

Effective interlayer fusion is a critical step enabling a 3D printing process. For engineering polymer printing, interlayer fusion is usually either heat-enabled or binder-based, which may introduce thermal residual stress, warpage, and undesirable impurities. To overcome such challenges, a two-step immersion phase separation (IPS)-based room-temperature polymer fusion and solidification approach for self-supported engineering polymer printing, termed IPS-embedded 3D printing (IPS-E3DP) is introduced. IPS-E3DP is implemented by first depositing polymer inks in a solvent-rich yield-stress pre-c…
