Pre-Prison and Indigenous Predictors of Institutional Misconduct.

This study prospectively predicted institutional misconduct over a 34-month period using pre-prison factors-intrinsic characteristics an individual brings into prison-stemming from importation theory and indigenous factors-prison environment factors that affect an incarcerated adult-stemming from deprivation theory. Participants were 114 male and female incarcerated adults. Poisson regressions predicting the number of institutional infractions partially supported each of the models tested. Both pre-prison factors of self-regulatory mode and perceived social support were related to infractions

'Excited Delirium', acute behavioural disturbance, death and diagnosis.

In the 1980s the traditional Hippocratic term excited delirium was transplanted from the bedsides of febrile, agitated and disoriented patients to the streets of Miami. Deaths in custody of young men who were intoxicated with cocaine and who were restrained by the police because of their erratic or violent behaviour were attributed to excited delirium. The blood concentrations of cocaine in these subjects were approximately ten times lower than the lethal level and other factors which might have contributed to the fatal outcome, such as the police use of neck-holds, choke-holds or 'hog-tying',

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly? A Triarchic Perspective on Psychopathy at Work.

Does psychopathy have an upside in vocational contexts? Applying the triarchic model of psychopathy, we propose that the dimensions of boldness, disinhibition, and meanness have different relations to workplace outcomes. Focusing on boldness and in line with socioanalytic personality theory, we propose that political skill moderates the relation between boldness and job performance. Using a sample of 477 target-coworker pairings, we found interaction effects of boldness and political skill on contextual and task performance, and the buffering of counterproductive work behavior. Furthermore, po

Associations between theory of mind and conduct problems in autistic and nonautistic youth.

Many autistic young people exhibit co-occurring behavior difficulties, characterized by conduct problems and oppositional behavior. However, the causes of these co-occurring difficulties are not well understood. Impairments in theory of mind (ToM) are often reported in autistic individuals and have been linked to conduct problems in nonautistic individuals. Whether an association between ToM ability and conduct problems exists in autistic populations, whether this association is similar between individuals who are autistic versus nonautistic, and whether these associations are specific to cond

Editorial: Using Parents' Past to Predict Children's Future: Parental History of Mental Disorders as a Predictor of Outcomes in Children With Disruptive Behavior.

Numerous studies show that children with conduct problems are at risk for experiencing poor economic, social, and health outcomes as they gr … ior, along with marked functional impairment.1 The remaining children appear to "grow out of" their problem behavior, and achieve relatively good outcomes.1 This observation creates a challenge for interventionists: if the presence of conduct problems and their age-of-onset cannot distinguish between children with different prognoses, how does one identify who is …

Sleep and Challenging Behaviors in the Context of Intensive Behavioral Intervention for Children with Autism.

This study examined the associations between sleep and challenging behaviors for average and night-to-night fluctuations in sleep, in 39 children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) receiving intensive behavioral intervention (IBI). Child sleep was recorded (via actigraphy) for five nights in conjunction with clinician-reported observations of challenging behaviors. Results indicated that on average, poor sleep was associated with higher rates of repetitive behavior, negative affect, and a composite of overall challenging behaviors. These findings suggest that average sleep patterns are import

Toward an integrated understanding of dyslexia: genetic, neurological, and cognitive mechanisms.

This paper reviews what is known about developmental dyslexia at three levels of analysis: cognitive, neurological, and genetic. It also considers the difficult problem of establishing causal links between these levels of analysis, and argues that solving the gene-behavior problem is paradoxically easier than solving the brain-behavior problem.

Self-injurious behavior and gambling-related attitudes, perceptions and behaviors in adolescents.

Gambling is prevalent among adolescents and adolescents are vulnerable to experiencing gambling-related problems. Although problem gambling and suicidal behavior have been linked in adults and self-injurious behaviors may predict future suicidality, prior studies have not investigated relationships between problem-gambling severity and self-injurious behavior in adolescents. Data from 2234 Connecticut high-school students were analyzed in chi-square tests and logistic regression models to examine self-injurious behaviors in relation to at-risk/problem gambling with respect to sociodemographic

Increased Treatment Intensity Promotes Reduced Attrition in Parent Training Programs for Children With Challenging Behavior.

BackgroundBehavioral Parent Training (BPT) Programs are highly efficacious but are limited due to high attrition. We sought to reduce attrition through modifications to the intensity level (i.e., number of hours per week) with which services are delivered.MethodsWe conducted a nonrandomized, parametric study of three distinct treatment intensity levels (high, medium, and low) with 116 participants with clinically significant challenging behavior and their caregivers. We examined rates of attrition, within appointment behavior reduction, and pre-post changes in standardized measures across all

Psychosocial correlates of marijuana use and problem drinking in a national sample of adolescents.

Personality, environmental, and behavioral variables representing psychosocial risk factors for adolescent problem behavior were assessed in a 1974 national sample study of over 10,000 junior and senior high school students. Significant correlations were found with marijuana use, and the relationships held across differences in age, sex, and ethnic group membership. Greater involvement in marijuana use was associated with greater value on independence than on academic achievement, lower expectations for academic achievement, lesser religiosity, greater tolerance of deviance, less compatibility…

Multiple risk behaviors among youth living with human immunodeficiency virus in five U.S. cities.

PURPOSE: To describe multiple risk behaviors (substance use, sexual risk, and medication adherence) in a multi-site sample of youth living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in five U.S. cites. METHODS: Youth (N=352) were recruited from four Adolescent Trials Network (ATN) sites (Philadelphia, Fort Lauderdale, Baltimore, and Los Angeles) and one non-ATN site in Detroit and screened for multiple problem behaviors for an intervention study. A substance abuse problem was determined with the CRAFFT, a six-item adolescent screener. Single items were used to screen for current sexual risk and …

Using a Multiple-Schedule Procedure to Signal the Availability of Attention: Three Demonstrations.

Adjudicated adolescents detained in residential facilities for illegal sexual behavior, as well as adolescents living at home, may engage in problem behaviors such as excessive vocalizations. In residential detention facilities, these excessive vocalizations may result in disciplinary action and loss of privileges. Moreover, excessive vocalizations may also reduce the amount of positive social interactions that staff members and caregivers have with the adolescents. The current study evaluated a multiple-schedule procedure for reducing excessive vocalizations displayed by three adolescents. Th…

The role of coping and problem drinking in men's abuse of female partners: test of a path model.

This article examines the relationship of coping and problem drinking to men's abusive behavior towards female partners. While previous research has demonstrated a consistent association between problem drinking and male abuse of intimate partners, virtually no studies have assessed the role of coping in relation to men's violence. Furthermore, multivariate studies have not examined how these factors operate together to increase risk for abusive behavior. An ethnically diverse sample of 147 men in a court-mandated program for domestic violence offenders completed questionnaires at the first se

Trajectories of boys' physical aggression, opposition, and hyperactivity on the path to physically violent and nonviolent juvenile delinquency.

A semi-parametric mixture model was used with a sample of 1,037 boys assessed repeatedly from 6 to 15 years of age to approximate a continuo … ry, and a no problem trajectory. Boys who followed a given trajectory for one type of externalizing problem behavior did not necessarily follow the same trajectory for the two other types of behavior problem. The different developmental trajectories of problem behavior also led to different types of juvenile delinquency. A chronic oppositional trajectory, with the …

Positive behavior support (PBS) with children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders: Characterizing caregivers' use of PBS using follow-up clinical trial data.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are associated with neurodevelopmental challenges leading to difficulties with everyday life tasks. The Families Moving Forward (FMF) Program teaches caregivers to use positive behavior support (PBS), integrated with other techniques. However, it is unknown how caregivers retain and use these PBS strategies after the intervention. METHODS: About 4.5 months after completing the FMF Program, twenty-three caregivers of children with FASD aged 4-12 were interviewed about problem behaviors targeted during the FMF Program and their continued use o…

The co-occurrence of gambling with substance use and conduct disorder among youth in the United States.

The co-occurrence of gambling with substance use and conduct disorder was examined in a representative U.S. household sample of 2,274 youth 14-21 years old. The findings show that problem gambling occurs within a problem-behavior syndrome with other substance-use behaviors and conduct disorder. Male gender, being black, and being Hispanic were found to be significant in predicting problem gambling over and above the effects of all four substance use and conduct disorder variables. Clinical interventions for one specific problem behavior in youth should consider assessing the other problem beha…

The efficacy and acceptability of group trauma-focused cognitive behavior therapy for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder in children and adolescents: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Group trauma-focused cognitive behavior therapy (TF-CBT) is widely used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in children and adolescents. However, the available evidence remains unclear. METHOD: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, Web of Science, PsycINFO, CINAHL, ProQuest Dissertations, LILACS, and international trial registers were searched from database inception to April 30, 2022. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared TF-CBT with any control condition for treating children and adolescents with PTSD. Analyses were performed using Review Manager version 5

Transactional relationships between maternal requesting and responsivity, adolescent compliance, and task demands in fragile X syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Males with fragile X syndrome (FXS) may have difficulty with social communication and language in addition to behavioral concerns such as noncompliance to maternal requests. Mothers vary in how they pose requests to their children, and contextual demands may also be a factor in compliance. This study examined the relationships between maternal requesting behaviors, maternal responsivity, child compliance, and task demands in adolescent males with FXS. METHODS: 35 mother-son dyads completed three interactive tasks during in-home visits (puzzle, iPad games, snack). The adolescents a
