Speech and Language Therapists' Views Regarding Their Scope of Practice in Written Language.

BACKGROUND: Spoken and written language are closely linked, and Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) have expertise in the language skills that support both. However, unlike countries such as the US and Australia, UK SLTs lack clear guidance on their role in written language. This study explores the views of SLTs working with adults (aged 16+) and children to inform consideration of a UK position statement. AIMS: To examine UK SLTs' views on their role and scope of practice in written language assessment and intervention, and to ascertain whether a position statement is needed. METHODS AND

Roles of social workers and community health extension workers in enhancing access to maternal and child health services: reflection on a Nigerian intervention.

Nigeria introduced Maternal and Child Health (MCH) programs to improve access to skilled care in response to persistently poor health outcomes among women and children. While existing assessments often emphasize the role of healthcare workers, the contributions of social workers and Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) remain largely overlooked. This study explores the roles played by social workers and CHEWs in enhancing access to MCH services through an intervention project in Anambra State, Nigeria. An exploratory qualitative design was employed, involving interviews with five social

Cost-benefit analysis of pharmacist early active consultation in patients with multidrug-resistant bacteria in China.

BACKGROUND: Although Pharmacist Early Active Consultation (PEAC) has demonstrated clinical benefits in patients with multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs), its cost-effectiveness in China remains insufficiently studied. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of PEAC in patients with MDROs from the perspective of the Chinese healthcare system. METHOD: A historically controlled study was conducted on 100 MDRO-infected patients, including 37 who received PEAC and 63 who did not. The effective treatment rate and duration of the symptoms were assessed. A decision tree model was

Community Pharmacists' Perceptions and Needs Regarding Oral Healthcare Advice in Japan.

It is desirable for community pharmacists to be involved in promoting and maintaining the oral health of local residents. In this study, we conducted a questionnaire survey of Japanese community pharmacists to understand the actual conditions and the attitudes of these pharmacists regarding oral healthcare advice. A web-based anonymous self-administered questionnaire survey was completed by community pharmacists from March 26 to 29, 2021. We received responses from 324 pharmacists. A majority of respondents (66.0%) regarded dealing with "daily oral health issues and oral care" as a role of com

Impact of Pharmacist-Led Education on Proper Prophylactic Enoxaparin Dosing in Obese Patients.

Background/Purpose: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common cardiovascular complication in middle-aged adults. There is a likelihood a patient may experience VTE when admitted to a hospital. Prophylactic medications such as low-dose unfractionated heparin and enoxaparin are started to prevent VTE. A pharmacist-led health system-wide Grand Rounds promoted prophylactic enoxaparin 40 mg twice daily instead of once daily in patients with a body mass index (BMI) 40 kg/m2 or greater. Methodology: This case-control study was conducted at a Essentia Health - Fargo, in the Upper Midwest. Data of acute

Impact of a Pharmacist-Driven Poststroke Transitions of Care Clinic on 30 and 90-Day Hospital Readmission Rates.

BACKGROUND: Stroke impacts nearly 800,000 people annually and the risk of recurrent stroke and hospital readmission is increased early following the initial event. Due to the increase in morbidity and mortality associated with secondary events, a pharmacist-driven poststroke transitions of care clinic was created at Methodist University Hospital to provide risk factor modification in an effort to decrease risk of recurrence and hospital readmissions. METHODS: A retrospective matched-cohort study was conducted between 9/1/2017 and 2/28/2019. Adult patients with a primary diagnosis of stroke, d

Understanding the Athletic Trainer's Role in the Return-to-Learn Process at National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II and III Institutions.

CONTEXT: Postconcussion, student-athletes should return to the classroom using a gradual, stepwise process to ensure that symptoms are not exacerbated by cognitive activities. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has mandated that its affiliated institutions develop return-to-learn (RTL) policies to support the return to the classroom. OBJECTIVE: To investigate athletic trainers' (ATs') perceptions of their role in the RTL policy development and implementation at NCAA Division II and III institutions. DESIGN: Qualitative study. SETTING: Individual phone interviews. PATIENTS

Improved latent tuberculosis therapy completion rates in refugee patients through use of a clinical pharmacist.

SETTING: Primary care clinic for refugees, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of a clinical pharmacist-run clinic for latent tuberculous infection (LTBI) on LTBI treatment completion rates in refugee patients. DESIGN: In 2012, a pharmacist-run LTBI clinic was established to improve adherence and completion rates among refugees. Before 2012, LTBI treatment completion rates were less than 30%. A structured model was developed to efficiently track patients and ensure completion within specified time ranges. Interventions made by the pharmacist were recorded. Comple

Effectiveness of Pharmacist-Led Amiodarone Monitoring Services on Improving Adherence to Amiodarone Monitoring Recommendations: A Systematic Review.

Amiodarone remains the mostly frequently used antiarrhythmic in clinical practice and is most often used to maintain normal sinus rhythm in patients with atrial fibrillation who have failed a rate control strategy. Amiodarone has superior efficacy over other antiarrhythmics, a lower risk of torsade de pointes, and a better cardiovascular safety profile in patients with structural heart disease. However, amiodarone is associated with notable noncardiac toxicities affecting the thyroid, lungs, eyes, liver, and central nervous system. Since 2000, clinicians have been advised to follow amiodarone

What's gender got to do with it? Examining masculinities, health and safety and return to work in male dominated skilled trades.

BACKGROUND: Electrical injuries are a common cause of work-related injury in male dominated skilled trades. OBJECTIVES: In this study we explored how issues of gender, masculinities and institutional workplace practices shape expectations of men and their choices when returning to work following a workplace electrical injury. METHODS: Twelve workers, who suffered an electrical injury, and twelve employer representatives, completed semi-structured interviews. Using thematic analysis we identified key themes related to how masculinities influenced men's health and safety during the return to w

An implementation protocol for noninvasive ventilation prescription: the physiotherapist's role in an Italian hospital.

BACKGROUND: For patients with chronic respiratory failure or sleep breathing disorders, adaptation and training are important prerequisites for successful home noninvasive ventilation (NIV) and CPAP. In Europe, management of NIV/CPAP is sometimes performed by physiotherapists (PTs). However, their role within the NIV/CPAP management team is not well defined. OBJECTIVE: To describe the implementation of a standardized protocol to NIV adaptation for patients with chronic respiratory disease. Secondary outcomes were to evaluate the PT's role and time-consumption. METHODS: We enrolled 201 patien

Sickening nurses: fever nursing, nurses' illness, and the anatomy of blame, New Zealand 1903-1923.

In the early twentieth century, patients with infectious fevers represented a danger to the health of others including their nurses. This research describes the training New Zealand nurses received in fever nursing during the period 1903-1923, and considers how they applied hospital cross-infection principles in emergency tent fever camps in remote rural areas. It examines the reaction of nurses, hospital boards, and physicians to nurses who succumbed with their patients' fevers. It therefore reveals attitudes to nurses, prevailing ideas about responsibility for nurses' health, and elements in
