Incidental connection: Cancer and caregiving during COVID-19.

In this brief article, the author describes how her husband was first diagnosed with mesothelioma, an incidental finding of routine medical testing. His first surgery was timed to the beginnings of coronavirus (COVID) lockdown. The staging of his cancer aligned with a new stage of the pandemic, and by the time of his first chemotherapy appointment, patients were no longer allowed to bring family along for outpatient visits. Although the author is an expert and educator on psychosocial care in medicine, she has found herself at a complete loss, teaching herself the ropes of how to connect with

Building Competence in Practice with the Polyamorous Community: A Scoping Review.

The landscape of relationships, gender, and sexuality continues to change rapidly across the world. This includes recognition of relationship styles such as polyamory, in which individuals have multiple romantic relationships with the knowledge and consent of all involved. In the academic literature on polyamory, social work perspectives are noticeably absent. Thus, a scoping review concerning social work, counseling, and polyamory was conducted to assess knowledge from the last decade and to contribute to the field. The themes that arose were the need for clinicians to examine their biases to

Emergency Medical Responders and Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Because of the high prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and wandering behavior, emergency medical responders (EMRs) will likely encounter children and adolescents with ASD. The objectives were to describe interactions between EMRs and children and adolescents with ASD, to evaluate EMRs' ability to recognize ASD in a simulated trauma setting, and to determine if EMRs' demographic characteristics affected their interactions with ASD youth. METHODS: A study of 75 videos of a simulated school bus crash was performed. The simulation included an adolescent with ASD portrayed by

Life after release from prison: The experience of ex-offenders with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: In the UK, little is known about the experience of ex-prisoners with intellectual disabilities. METHOD: A qualitative study was therefore conducted to investigate what life is like for ten men with intellectual disabilities who left prison at least 9 months previously. Semi-structured interviews were employed to explore the men's views of post-prison life, including opportunities/challenges and support received from services. RESULTS: Through interpretative phenomenological analysis, four over-arching themes were constructed: the nature of support and services, the difficulty of

Psychotherapy of Dependent Personality Disorder: The Relationship of Patient-Therapist Interactions to Outcome.

So far, only a few studies have focused on psychotherapy for Dependent Personality Disorder (DPD). DPD is marked by a repetitive pattern of efforts aiming at maintaining close relationships, which may present as a lack of assertiveness and as a difficulty in making routine decisions. The present study aims at exploring processes of change taking place during the working phase of a clarification-oriented psychotherapy (COP) by focusing on the in-session patient-therapist interaction, as it changes during treatment and their links with treatment outcome. Methods: N = 74 patients with DPD were re

Predictors of the application of exposure in vivo in the treatment of agoraphobia in an outpatient clinic: An exploratory approach.

OBJECTIVE: Although exposure in vivo is considered to be the most effective therapy component in the treatment of agoraphobia (AG), there is a remarkable lack of its application in psychotherapeutic routine care. We examined the severity of anxiety, psychological distress/comorbidity, therapeutic process/alliance, and sociodemographic status as potential predictors of in vivo exposure. METHOD: We applied correlational analyses and logistic regression analyses in a sample of N = 92 patients (main diagnosis AG) in an outpatient setting. RESULTS: Logistic regression analyses did not yield any s

The Role of Healthcare Professionals in Encouraging Parents to See and Hold Their Stillborn Baby: A Meta-Synthesis of Qualitative Studies.

BACKGROUND: Globally, during 2013 there were three million recorded stillbirths. Where clinical guidelines exist some recommend that professionals do not encourage parental contact. The guidance is based on quantitative evidence that seeing and holding the baby is not beneficial for everyone, but has been challenged by bereaved parents' organisations. We aim to inform future guideline development through a synthesis of qualitative studies reporting data relevant to the research question; how does the approach of healthcare professionals to seeing and holding the baby following stillbirth impac

Innovative approach using interprofessional simulation to educate surgical residents in technical and nontechnical skills in high-risk clinical scenarios.

IMPORTANCE: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education core competencies stress nontechnical skills that can be difficult to evaluate and teach to surgical residents. During emergencies, surgeons work in interprofessional teams and are required to perform certain procedures. To obtain proficiency in these skills, residents must be trained. OBJECTIVE: To educate surgical residents in leadership, teamwork, effective communication, and infrequently performed emergency surgical procedures with the use of interprofessional simulations. The 'ability' paradigm in vocational rehabilitation: challenges in an Ontario injured worker retraining program.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, a focus on workers' ability, rather than impairment, has guided disability management services. However, a challenge with the notion of 'ability' is identification of the border between ability and inability. This article considers this gray zone of disability management in the case of a workers' compensation vocational retraining program for injured workers in Ontario. METHODS: In-depth interviews and focus groups were conducted with a purposive sample of 71 participants who were directly involved with the vocational retraining process. Workers in the program h

Characteristics of client-identified helpful events in emotion-focused therapy for child abuse trauma.

This study investigated the characteristics of client-identified helpful events (n=29) in emotion-focused therapy for child abuse trauma (EFTT). Helpful events (HE) were identified on the Helpful Aspects of Therapy Questionnaire and in Post Therapy Interviews, located in video-taped therapy sessions, and compared to researcher-defined control events (CE) for each client. Results indicated a greater focus on childhood abuse (particularly during the imaginal confrontation procedure), higher levels of emotional arousal, and comparable alliance quality in HE compared to CE. HE contained deeper lev

Playing with Gladys: A case study integrating drama therapy with behavioural interventions for the treatment of selective mutism.

This case study examines an integrative approach combining drama therapy and the behavioural skill "shaping", as offered to Gladys, a 5-year-old girl diagnosed with selective mutism. This study found that shaping, when implemented in the context of play, with play as the primary reinforcer, elicited from Gladys vocalization and eventually speech within a very short time. Her vocalizations allowed her to enter dramatic play, which in turn propelled spontaneous speech. This article looks at how the three elements of dramatherapy - the playspace, role-playing and dramatic projection - brought abo

Recording therapy sessions: an evaluation of patient and therapist reported behaviours, attitudes and preferences.

BACKGROUND: Audio recording of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) sessions has been recommended but not yet widely adopted. It is believed to have positive effects on later recall and reflection by the patient and on supervisory quality and accuracy for therapists. AIMS: To evaluate self-reported attitudes and behaviour regarding audio recording of therapy sessions in both patients and therapists in a setting where such recording is routinely carried out. METHOD: In a centre specializing in CBT for anxiety disorders, 72 patients completed a questionnaire at the start of therapy and 31 patie

[Sexuell assaults in therapeutic relationships: risk factors, consequences and legal steps].

About 10 years ago, an initial empirical study was conducted in Germany about this topic. Since then, a penal code, paragraph 174 c StGB, was decreed, prohibiting sexual contact between therapists and their patients. A current follow-up survey was conducted in order to determine whether the results of previous surveys concerning situation conditions and after-effects converge with current results and if so, to what extent. Secondly, the survey was conducted to determine whether or not changes in the way the involved patients and authorities deal with this type of incident are evident. To ensur

What makes a man a man? The lived experience of male breast cancer.

Male breast cancer is a rare condition with scant research into its psychosocial impact. This phenomenologic study sought to elicit its lived experience. Following analysis of interview data, 4 key themes emerged: Living with male breast cancer, concealment as a strategy for managing the diagnosis, a contested masculinity, interacting with health services. Male breast cancer constitutes a unique lived experience for men that is unparalleled in other disease profiles. The idea of living with a feminized illness was very distressing and stigmatizing for some men. Furthermore, treatment resulted
