We investigated the effects of smoking status on the serum prolactin levels in schizophrenia. The serum prolactin concentration was significantly higher in nonsmokers compared with smokers. Moreover, smoking was an independent predictor of prolactin concentration. These findings suggest that smoking has an impact on prolactin concentration in male schizophrenic patients.

We describe here a case of a clinically nonfunctioning pituitary adenoma, but with expression of ACTH and PRL. A 42-year-old woman was referred to our department for further evaluation of pituitary tumor. She had no acromegaloid features, and no typical Cushingoid features. She had no galactorrhea, and had regular menses. GH, IGF-I, LH, FSH, TSH, ACTH and cortisol levels in blood were all within the normal ranges, while PRL levels were mildly elevated. Rats with endogenous hyperprolactinaemia, as induced by pituitary homografts under the kidney capsule, displayed increased grooming behavior as compared to that of sham-operated animals. Twelve days after surgery, intracerebroventricular injection of anti-prolactin serum (dilution 1:100, 1 microliter) suppressed the excessive grooming of homografted rats. These observations suggest that prolactin from a peripheral source may reach the central nervous system to affect brain mechanisms involved in grooming behavior.

To examine the long term effectiveness of transsphenoidal microsurgery for patients with PRL-secreting pituitary tumors, we studied 54 women at yearly intervals after transsphenoidal surgery. Five years after surgery, 19 women (35%) had normal serum PRL concentrations, and 23 (43%) had persistent hyperprolactinemia.
