AIM: To report a clinical case of unicystic ameloblastoma previously misdiagnosed as radicular cyst.
SUMMARY: A 49-year-old white male was referred to a private practitioner complaining of an asymptomatic bony hard swelling of the left posterior mandible. The patient's dental history indicated that his left mandibular first molar had been extracted approximately 10 years previously. At that time, preoperative radiographic examination demonstrated a radiolucent area of 1.5 cm diameter with well-defined margins involving the distal root of tooth 36. The lesion was diagnosed as cystic and surger…

Lumbar facet synovial cysts (LFSCs) are degenerative lesions associated with facet arthropathy and segmental instability, predominantly occurring at the L4-L5 level. They may cause radiculopathy and neurogenic claudication, and although conservative management may provide temporary relief, cases associated with degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS) frequently require surgical treatment. Minimally invasive spine surgery assisted by spinal navigation allows precise cyst resection and adequate stabilization. The aim of this study was to present a case series of LFSCs associated with DS treated with

PURPOSE: To evaluate outcomes associated with choice of wound management, ie, primary closure or healing by secondary intention, of osseous defects after excision of maxillofacial bone lesions as a guide to clinical practice.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using a retrospective cohort study design, we enrolled a sample composed of subjects treated for jaw lesions between 1995 and 2003. The primary predictor variable was the wound management choice of the residual jaw defect, classified as primary closure or healing by secondary intention. The primary outcome variable was postoperative inflammatory com

To present 58 cystic space-occupying formations of the spinal canal in 53 cases; these formations are called "juxtafacet cysts". Fifty-Three patients (33 women and 20 men, with an average age of 60.8 years) were evaluated retrospectively by neurosurgery. All of the patients had received simple X-P, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before surgery. The neurological findings were evaluated on admission and in a follow-up review. Surgical intervention was performed on all patients and they underwent gross-total cyst removal. During surgery, the origin of a cyst was wel

Forty-five examples of epithelial odontogenic lesions (9 ameloblastomas (AB): 13 odontogenic keratocysts (OKC): 15 dentigerous cysts (DC): 6 radicular cysts (RC): and 2 odontogenic carcinomas (OC)) were immunohistochemically analyzed for the presence of p53 protein (p53P) and proliferative activity as indicated by positivity for Ki-67 antigen. p53P+ cells, detected as dense and/or faint nuclear staining, were found in 42 of the 45 odontogenic lesions examined. Dense p53P reactivity was most commonly detected in OKC, AB and OC, with other lesions generally exhibiting only weak nuclear reactivit…

BACKGROUND: Epidermoid cysts are rare and account for only 1 % of primary spinal tumors. It's due to inclusion of ectodermal tissue during the third and fourth weeks of gestation. Infected epidermoid cysts are exceedingly rare with very few reports in literature. The clinical presentations include radicular symptoms, motor weakness, sphincteric disturbance, and repeated chemical meningitis. Surgery of this kind of tumor remained a challenge and of a considerable recurrence rate.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study reviewing the records of six children who were treated for filum terminale i

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.
OBJECTIVE: Compare outcomes of different treatment methods for intraspinal synovial cysts.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Intraspinal synovial cysts are cited as an increasing cause of back pain and radiculopathy. To date, few studies have compared outcomes of differing treatment methods in patients with synovial cysts.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 167 consecutive patients undergoing surgical management of 195 symptomatic synovial cysts at a single institution over 19 years. The incidence of postoperative mechanical back pain, radiculopathy, and cyst

In the oral cavity, extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma can occur in the periapical region either in the maxilla or mandible. Also, it can mimic inflammatory lesions that arise around the teeth apices such as periapical granuloma, radicular cyst and osteomyelitis. Misdiagnosis of lymphomas in the jaws may reduce the chance of successful treatment and worsen the prognosis. Therefore, any growth of periapical tissue must be submitted for histopathological evaluation to avoid a delay in the diagnosis. We present a case of extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of a 53-year-old male in the right posterio…

Hematomas in the lumbar ligamentum flavum are rare and may generate signs and symptoms of lumbar nerve root compression or neurogenic claudication similar to the far more common degenerative diseases. The pathogenesis of these hematomas is unclear. Ruptured irregular vessels of the degenerated and hypertrophic ligamentum flavum were assumed. We diagnosed three patients with a flavum hematoma intraoperatively leading to radicular complaints and spinal claudication. One occurred as a complication of local infiltration therapy, and the other two patients reported minor trauma as the releasing fac

Sixty patients requiring repeat surgery after lumbar disc excision are reviewed. Thirty-one had had their initial surgery performed by the authors and represent a 5.9% frequency of repeat surgery after initial laminectomy for sciatica. Of the 60 patients, 49 suffered recurrent radicular pain, 20 suffered from back pain, and 8 had other problems (infection, extradural cysts, etc.). In patients with recurrent sciatica, perineural fibrosis and recurrent herniation were the most common problems; those patients with the latter pathologic condition responded most favorably to repeat surgery. Of 520

PURPOSE: To determine if lumbar synovial cyst rupture in symptomatic patients results in improved clinical outcome when using direct tandem and/or coaxial percutaneous CT guided techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 20 patients with unilateral lower extremity radiculopathy and/or low back pain underwent CT guided percutaneous treatment for their symptomatic lumbar synovial cysts. Cysts were identified with the use of a low osmolar non-ionic contrast agent via facet joint injection or through direct injection. Cyst rupture, using a direct tandem and/or coaxial technique, was attempted in all pati

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Esophageal cysts (EC) are congenital, extremely rare malformation. Up to 80% of EC are diagnosed in childhood, therefore, we can find only few clinical observations of EC in adults in literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: During the period from October to December 2019, a successful surgical treatment of 2 patients (1 male and 1 female) with enterogenous and duplication cysts of esophagus was performed at the Clinic of Faculty Surgery at Sechenov University. In both cases thoracic tumors were incidental findings during routine health investigation.
CLINICAL DISCUSSION:
