Radiation therapy may cause acute and/or chronic skin reactions. In this paper a patient with contact urticaria associated with irradiation is described. We could not determine the agent behind the contact urticaria in our patient in light of the current literature. We are reporting this case because the literature neither mentioned radiotherapy as being among the agents that lead to contact urticaria nor reported contact urticaria as being among the acute reactions to radiotherapy.

Chronic cutaneous lesions in eight of 15 survivors of the Chernobyl nuclear energy plant accident presenting with clinical features of cutaneous radiation fibrosis were examined 6 years after exposure using high-frequency ultrasound. Closure of sacral wounds remains a challenge, especially when dealing with previously irradiated tissue. A report of a chronic sacral radiation ulcer successfully closed with the retroperitoneal transfer of a transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous flap is presented. The healing of a surgical wound is significantly affected by radiation. Radiation can affect all cells within its treatment field, thus making irradiated tissue more susceptible to trauma, infection, and irritation. In the irradiated patient, careful preoperative planning and a preventive approach to optimize conditions for wound healing are crucial to minimizing complications. This article describes the principles and management of common complications seen from irradiated soft-tissue wounds of the head and neck.

Skin thickening of the breasts of 22 women undergoing excision biopsy of a breast cancer and subsequent radiation therapy to 5,000 rad is considered. The skin thickness of the treated breast returned to normal in 17 of 22 patients studied. Of the 17, nearly 60% returned to normal in 2 years, over 80% in 3 years, and the rest by 4 years. The period of follow-up was less than 4 years in the five patients with residual skin thickening. The alterations in skin thickness are consistent with the histopathologic changes seen in radiation dermatitis.
