2D-PAGE analysis of Taenia solium metacestode 10-30 kDa antigens for the serodiagnosis of neurocysticercosis in children.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) caused by T. solium metacestode is an increasingly important health issue in Indian children. The sensitivity and specificity of available serological techniques were low in case of single cysticercus granuloma cases which is a more common feature in Indian patients who are children. Serum samples were collected from 13 clinically and radiologically suggestive NCC children and seropositive by ELISA, 25 clinically and radiologically suggestive NCC children and seronegative by ELISA and 25 control subjects. The 10-30 kDa antigens of T. solium metacestode were subjected t

Radiation combined injury: overview of NIAID research.

The term "radiation combined injury" (RCI) is used to describe conditions where radiation injury is coupled with other insults such as burns, wounds, infection, or blunt trauma. A retrospective account of injuries sustained following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima estimates that RCI comprised approximately 65% of all injuries observed. Much of the research that has been performed on RCI was carried out during the Cold War and our understanding of the clinical problem RCI presents does not reflect the latest advances in medicine or science. Because concerns have increased that terrorists might

Applications of Capstone depleted uranium aerosol risk data to military combat risk management.

Risks to personnel engaged in military operations include not only the threat of enemy firepower but also risks from exposure to other hazards such as radiation. Combatant commanders of the U.S. Army carefully weigh risks of casualties before implementing battlefield actions using an established paradigm that takes these risks into consideration. As a result of the inclusion of depleted uranium (DU) anti-armor ammunition in the conventional (non-nuclear) weapons arsenal, the potential for exposure to DU aerosols and its associated chemical and radiological effects becomes an element of the com

Radiological joint space width in the clinically normal hips of a Korean population.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper was to investigate the association of the joint space width (JSW) of the hip with radiologically observed hip deformity, the anthropological features and aging in a clinically asymptomatic Korean population. DESIGN: 428 consecutive patients who were without clinical evidence of hip osteoarthritis (OA) and who underwent supine anteroposterior (AP) pelvic radiography for hip contusion or a routine health check were analyzed for the relation of joint space narrowing to the center-edge (CE) angle, the acetabular depth, the head-neck ratio, the neck-shaft angle

[Ivermectin as a therapeutic alternative in neurocysticercosis that is resistant to conventional pharmacological treatment].

INTRODUCTION: Neurocysticercosis is a public health problem that can be found in many parts of the world, especially in developing countries, and today's high rates of immigration are making it increasingly more common in developed countries. Cysticidal treatment of neurocysticercosis is a controversial issue because it is only partially effective against vesicular and colloidal-shaped cysts when the parasite persists after a course of albendazole or praziquantel, the only two therapeutic options that are currently available. Ivermectin is a very effective, safe veterinary and human antiparasi

Intracranial multiple tuberculomas: 2 unusual cases.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is still a major public health problem that continues to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality at worldwide level. Only 1% of patients with TB develop an intracranial tuberculoma (Tbm), usually as part of miliary TB. The radiological findings are often nonspecific, and they are difficult to diagnose without an increased index of suspicion. CASES DESCRIPTIONS: In this report, we presented 2 unusual patients with intracranial multiple Tbms, one of whom is a 32-year-old woman who did not have pulmonary TB or other primary origin of TB. Her diagnosis was e

[Reasons for delayed diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis].

100 patients at first treatment were investigated according to a complete questionnaire for explaining the causes of tardy diagnosis in pulmonary tuberculosis. The roles of the disease, patient and physician in this delay were followed. The insidious or atypical onset of the disease in 82% of these patients explains the long interval (107.2 days on the average) elapsed between the appearance of the first symptoms and the diagnosis determination. As a consequence of low cultural level, many patients cannot give a correct interpretation of the symptomatology and they seek the physician's help af

Health impact associated with vertebral deformities: results from the European Vertebral Osteoporosis Study (EVOS).

To study the association between vertebral deformities and subjective health outcome indicators, including back pain and disability, a cross-sectional survey with spinal radiographs and personal interviews was carried out in 36 study centres in 19 European countries on a total of 15,570 men and women aged 50-79 years (population-based stratified random samples). No interventions were done. The main outcome measures were the presence and intensity of current and previous back pain, functional capacity (ADL questionnaire) and overall subjective health. The presence and intensity of back pain and

Oral health status of Dutch Armed Forces recruits in the years 2000, 2010 and 2020, a retrospective repeated cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Studies on oral health status of adults are sparse and rarely include data on endodontic treatment and trauma. In the military, those data are available because recruits are routinely assessed with a clinical and radiological examination at the start of their career. This study aimed to identify differences in oral health status of Dutch Armed Forces recruits between cohorts, departments, sex, age and rank, with DMF-T, endodontic treatment and dental trauma as outcome measures. METHODS: Data from Electronic Patient Files from all recruits enlisted in 2000, 2010 and 2020 were used

Ten tips on how to assess bone health in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) experience a several-fold increased risk of fracture. Despite the high incidence and the associated excess morbidity and premature mortality, bone fragility in CKD, or CKD-associated osteoporosis, remains a blind spot in nephrology with an immense treatment gap. Defining the bone phenotype is a prerequisite for the appropriate therapy of CKD-associated osteoporosis at the patient level. In the present review, we suggest 10 practical 'tips and tricks' for the assessment of bone health in patients with CKD. We describe the clinical, biochemical, and rad

Exploring the interplay of bone lesions: unraveling health implications and daily life challenges in an Iron Age skeleton from Ya'amun, Jordan.

This study analyzed the paleopathological conditions of a 30-year-old male unearthed at the site of Ya'amun in northern Jordan. The skeleton was dated back to Iron age. The paleopathological examinations were performed using macroscopic and radiological analyses. The results revealed multiple significant bone lesions, including periosteal osteosarcoma of the right femur, plagiocephaly, asymmetry of the sacrum, vertebral fractures, anemia, and osteoarthritis. This case represents the first example of neoplasm and plagiocephaly in the Iron Age of the region. Despite enduring severe health condit

A Rare Instance of Chordoid Glioma With Large Calcification Mimicking Craniopharyngioma.

Chordoid glioma (CG) is a world health organization classified grade II tumor whose typical localization is in the anterior part of the third ventricle. It's clinical, neuroimaging, and pathologic features may vary and furthermore mimic other types of benign lesions usually associated with a better outcome, thus representing a potential radiological and diagnostic pitfall. In this article, the authors present a novel case of a 51-year-old male who underwent gross total removal of the tumor of the third ventricle with high calcification. The imaging studies and the intraoperative examination le

Endometriosis and the Urinary Tract: From Diagnosis to Surgical Treatment.

We aim to describe the diagnosis and surgical management of urinary tract endometriosis (UTE). We detail current diagnostic tools, including advanced transvaginal ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and surgical diagnostic tools such as cystourethroscopy. While discussing surgical treatment options, we emphasize the importance of an interdisciplinary team for complex cases that involve the urinary tract. While bladder deep endometriosis (DE) is more straightforward in its surgical treatment, ureteral DE requires a high level of surgical skill. Specialists should be aware of the important e

[Improvement of fracture healing with teriparatide: series of 22 cases and review of the literature].

Pseudoarthrosis is defined as a non healing fracture 9 months after trauma and without radiological progression within the last three months. Osteoporotic fractures have a greater risk of chirurgical complications. The question of giving a medical treatment in the purpose of accelerating fracture healing is an increasing concern. There are data showing that with teriparatide (bone anabolic treatment derived from the parathyroid hormone) bone healing and functional status are improved, with or without surgery, in the case of either typical or atypical fractures. The risks of this treatment are

Chronic bilateral hearing loss in an immunocompetent patient. An atypical course of tuberculous meningitis.

Congenital, infectious, toxic, and demyelinating disorders are common etiological causes of deafness. Tuberculous meningitis, as one of the infectious causes, should be considered in the differential diagnosis since tuberculosis represents an endemic public health problem in developing countries. Multiple cranial nerve palsies can be expected due to basal meningitis; however, presentation with bilateral hearing loss is quite rare. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent mortality and residual neurologic deficits. The focus of this discussion is a 42-year-old female presenting with

Cat-scratch disease in a child with unique magnetic resonance imaging findings.

OBJECTIVE: To report a patient with cat-scratch disease and the associated radiological findings. PATIENT: A previously health 10-year-old boy presenting with fever and joint pain. RESULTS: The presence of multiple abnormal foci in the bone marrow were noted by magnetic resonance imaging. There was no correlation with either radionuclide or conventional radiographic imaging findings. The patient's condition was diagnosed as cat-scratch disease by the demonstration of elevated antibody titers to the causative organism, Bartonella (formerly Rochalimaea) henselae. CONCLUSION: Magnetic resonanc

Loasis as a possible trigger of African endomyocardial fibrosis: a case report from Nigeria.

A Nigerian boy, previously in good health, presented with a two-day history of fever with chills; followed on the third day by periorbital swelling, urticarial rash and itching; and on the sixth day by dyspneoa, abdominal swelling and leg swelling. There was clinical, radiological and electrocardiographic evidence of dominant right-sided heart failure. Loa-loa was isolated from the blood and eosinophilia was marked but both were cured by diethylcarbamazine therapy. Heart failure, however, persisted and ended fatally 25 1/2 months later. Endomyocardial fibrosis, more severe on the right sided c
