Adult, unilaterally cryptorchid rats were treated with a single injection of 200 i.u. human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG). The morphological response of Leydig cells and testicular macrophages at 24 and 72 h after treatment was quantified using morphometry. The hypothesis that systemically administered 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) reduces feeding by a specific action on satiation and satiety processes was examined using a food-rewarded runway task. Over the course of 15 successive trials, with food available for 2 min on each trial, the development of satiation was monitored following treatment with 5-HT (1 and 2 mg/kg SC) and saline. Organotypic cultures of rat cerebella were exposed to anoxia for 30 min. Prostacyclin (0.5 micrograms/ml medium) or 0.05 M Tris buffer pH 7.5 were added to the cultures immediately before exposure to anoxia. Repeated treatment of ethanol for 5 consecutive days has produced significant biochemical changes in the small intestine of the rat. The LDH and SDH were inhibited leading to deficient energy output from the glycolytic pathway and the Krebs cycle. The changes in ammonia metabolic profiles of intestine and blood indicate the presence of hyperammonemia. Enzymatic reactions associated with urea production and the levels of urea were increased. GS activity decreased explaining low levels of glutamine. These studies implicate PNC in producing hyperammonemia during ethanol treatment.

To assess the potential influence of diet on theobromine (TBR) disposition and the development of TBR-induced thymic and testicular toxicity, male Sprague-Dawley rats were given the following diets ad libitum for 28 days: (1) semipurified (S); (2) commercial chow (Ch); (3) semipurified + 0.6% TBR (S + TBR); or (4) commercial chow + 0.6% TBR (Ch + TBR). Leydig cells in testes of adult rats were selectively destroyed by a single intraperitoneal injection of ethane dimethane sulphonate. Four days later rats were made unilaterally cryptorchid and 1, 2 and 4 weeks later the histology of the testes were examined by light microscopy and morphometry.
