Spinal disorders lead to paralysis, numbness, pain, etc., due to nerve compression within the spinal canal, affecting quality of life (QOL). Identifying nerve compression is vital for accurate diagnosis. The pulsation of the dura mater, which contains cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the choroid plexus, is sometimes evaluated with ultrasound during surgery. Despite its clinical relevance, the physical characteristics of this pulsation remain largely unexplored due to advancements questioning traditional bulk flow theories. This study aimed to analyze the dynamics of dura mater pulsation for a be

Anti-IgLON5 disease, a rare neuroimmunological disorder, frequently manifests with aerodigestive symptoms such as dysphagia, dysarthria, acute respiratory failure, and eventually death. The Anti-IgLON5 disease is under-recongnized in the field of otolaryngology. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review is to summarize the current literature on airway management in Anti-IgLON5 disease, a potentially life-threatening condition, and present two cases that highlight the critical importance of early recognition and intervention for laryngeal symptoms. A comprehensive search of PubMed/MEDLINE fo

High spinal cord injuries (SCIs) lead to permanent diaphragmatic paralysis. The search for therapeutics to induce functional motor recovery is essential. One promising noninvasive therapeutic tool that could harness plasticity in a spared descending respiratory circuit is repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). Here, we tested the effect of chronic high-frequency (10 Hz) rTMS above the cortical areas in C2 hemisected rats when applied for 7 days, 1 month, or 2 months. An increase in intact hemidiaphragm electromyogram (EMG) activity and excitability (diaphragm motor evoked potenti

Adenoviruses are common pathogens that are responsible for a wide variety of infectious syndromes. The objectives of this study were to identify and characterize members of different adenovirus species at the molecular level and to describe the correlation between viruses and clinical syndromes during a period of 4 years. Between 2002 and 2006, 45 of 512 respiratory specimens (8%) from patients with acute respiratory tract infection tested positive for adenovirus. Four adenovirus isolates from samples sent for enterovirus isolation were also analyzed. This research identified 49 confirmed case

In twenty anaesthetized and spontaneously breathing rabbits airway pressures were measured above and below the larynx during tidal respiration through the larynx. Peak inspiratory and expiratory pressures at both sites were recorded in control conditions and then compared to values obtained in the course of progressive denervation of the airways. The two methods of denervation consisted of (1) bilateral section of superior and recurrent laryngeal nerves and of the midcervical vagotomy (horizontal method); (2) right-sided sections of the three nerves followed by left-sided sections (vertical me

The respiratory rate (f), tidal volume (VT) and ventilation (V) were measured in 3 groups of rats: 10 rats before and after cutting both recurrent laryngeal nerves (RLNX), 10 rats before and after bilateral phrenicotomy (PNX) and 5 sham transected (SHAMX) rats. All rats were exposed to air and gas mixtures, deficient in O2 and/or enriched with CO2. The barometric method was used to measure ventilatory parameters. The sham operation did not affect breathing pattern or ventilation. In RLNX rats, breathing the various gas mixtures exhibited no changes in V because f uniformly increased as VT decl

Over half of all spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are cervical, which can lead to paralysis and respiratory compromise, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Effective treatments to restore breathing after severe upper cervical injury are lacking; thus, it is imperative to develop therapies to address this. Epidural stimulation has successfully restored motor function after SCI for stepping, standing, reaching, grasping, and postural control. We hypothesized that closed-loop stimulation triggered via healthy hemidiaphragm EMG activity has the potential to elicit functional neuroplasticity in

The importance of mitochondria in spinal cord injury has mainly been attributed to their participation in apoptosis at the site of injury. But another aspect of mitochondrial function is the generation of more than 90% of cellular energy in the form of ATP, mediated by the oxidative phosphorylation (OxPhos) process. Cytochrome c oxidase (CcO) is a central OxPhos component and changes in its activity reflect changes in energy demand. A recent study suggests that respiratory muscle function in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients is compromised via alterations in mitochondrial f

Age-dependent poliomyelitis (ADPM) is a virally induced neuroparalytic disease of mice and a model for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ADPM is triggered in genetically susceptible mice by immunosuppression and infection with lactate dehydrogenase-elevating virus (LDV). Both ADPM and ALS are characterized by progressive degeneration of anterior horn motor neurons, and death in ALS is usually associated with respiratory failure. To assess respiratory function in ADPM, we investigated ventilation in conscious control and LDV-infected C58/J mice breathing air and then 6.5% CO(2) in O(2). Thre

Postoperative pain relief was studied in 280 patients undergoing various kinds of surgery, e.g., thoracic, upper and lower abdominal, perineal, obstetric, and orthopedic. Morphine, 2 or 4 mg, was given after surgery through an indwelling epidural catheter. Excellent analgesia was noted in 87% of patients; only 3.5% of patients were dissatisfied. A single injection gave complete pain relief for the entire postoperative period in 30% of cases; in the remaining patients the mean duration of analgesia was 10.7 hours (SD +/- 4.3). Plasma morphine concentrations recorded after 2-mg doses suggest a r

Botulism, a potentially fatal disease, is classically characterized by a symmetrical descending flaccid paralysis, which if left untreated can lead to respiratory failure and death. Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT), produced by certain species of Clostridium, is the most potent biological toxin known, and the direct cause of botulism. This study characterizes the acquisition in Spain of two forms of botulism, i.e., food-borne and infant botulism, which are largely caused by the main neurotoxin BoNT/B2. Polymorphism analysis of the bont/b2 gene, typing of the flagellin variable region sequence (flaV

Respiratory dysfunction is one of the most debilitating effects of spinal cord injury (SCI) impacting the quality of life of patients and caregivers. In addition, breathing difficulties impact the rehabilitation routine a patient may potentially undergo. Transcutaneous electrical spinal cord neuromodulation (TESCoN) is a novel approach to reactivate and retrain spinal circuits after paralysis. We demonstrate that acute and chronic TESCoN therapy over the cervical spinal cord positively impacts the breathing and coughing ability in a patient with chronic tetraplegia. ln addition, we show that t

Neonatal spinal cord injury is a rare complication of birth trauma by difficult delivery. The typical manifestations are often catastrophic, include decreased or absent movement, loss of reflexes, apnea or periodic breathing, and a lack of response to painful stimulation. The outcome is usually fatal or severe, with long-term sequelae of respiratory insufficiency, limb weakness, or even paralysis of the limbs. We described a male neonate with a C2 spinal cord injury who was born smoothly by vaginal delivery and was unnoticed initially due to unusual subtle symptoms. He presented with a hoarse

Botulism is an acute toxin-mediated neuroparalytic syndrome caused by some Clostridium species. It typically presents itself as an acute symmetric descending paralysis of cranial and peripheral nerves, which can potentially evolve to respiratory failure and death. We report a case of botulism diagnosed in a patient presenting with a parotitis probably due to xerostomia, even though he had already sought medical assistance for blurred vision and dysphagia. The neurological symptoms resolved without administration of antitoxin and botulism diagnosis was confirmed with identification of both toxi
