Macrobiotic nutrition and child health: results of a population-based, mixed-longitudinal cohort study in The Netherlands.

A population-based study on the nutritional status of children consuming macrobiotic diets was carried out in The Netherlands. Participants followed a macrobiotic diet based mainly on whole-grain cereals, pulses, and vegetables. Studies in children aged 0-10 y suggested that growth was retarded mainly between 6 and 18 mo. This was confirmed in a subsequent mixed-longitudinal study (including data on diet, anthropometry, blood chemistry, and pediatric examination) in 4-18 mo-old macrobiotic infants and a matched omnivorous control group. Ubiquitous deficiencies of energy, protein, vitamin B-12,

[Preliminary study on nutrition and precancerous lesions of the esophagus in the adolescents].

This paper reports the prevalence of chronic esophagitis and nutritional status among 538 persons 15-26 years old in the high-risk area of esophageal cancer. 166 subjects were from households with history of esophageal cancer while 372 from households without. The frequency of chronic esophagitis among male and female adolescents in the high risk areas (37.6% and 36%) was significantly, higher than that in the low risk areas. Furthermore, the frequency of chronic esophagitis in the adolescents in households with history of esophageal cancer was also higher than that without history of this can

Antiepileptic drug-induced psychosis associated with MTHFR C677T: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Various antiepileptic drugs can potentially cause psychiatric side effects in patients with epilepsy, but the precise mechanism of these actions remains unknown. In recent years, the common polymorphism C677T in the 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene has attracted attention for its role in the onset of psychiatric diseases. MTHFR and several vitamins (as cofactors) are crucial for remethylation of homocysteine via folate and homocysteine metabolism. We report a case of a Japanese patient who presented with reversible schizophrenia-like symptoms during antiepilept

Vitamins, minerals and supplements: part two.

Vitamins and minerals are organic food substances found only in plants and animals and are essential to the normal functioning of the body. Although only required in small amounts, as previously discussed in the past decade there has been an increased use of vitamin, mineral, herbal and nutritional supplements in the general population. While deficiencies in such nutrients can be harmful to health, conflicting claims have been made about the health benefits of such supplementation. In the second of an occasional series on vitamins, minerals, and supplements, JUNE THOMPSON gives an overview of

Postoperative metabolic and nutritional complications of bariatric surgery.

Bariatric surgery has become an increasingly important method for management of medically complicated obesity. In patients who have undergone bariatric surgery, up to 87% with type 2 diabetes mellitus develop improvement or resolution of their disease postoperatively. Bariatric surgery can reduce the number of absorbed calories through performance of either a restrictive or a malabsorptive procedure. Patients who have undergone bariatric surgery require indefinite, regular follow-up care by physicians who need to follow laboratory parameters of macronutrient as well as micronutrient malnutriti

The Role of Water-Soluble Vitamins and Vitamin D in Prevention and Treatment of Depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder in Adults.

Depression is a major global health concern expected to worsen by 2030. In 2019, 28 million individuals were affected by depressive disorders. Dietary and supplemental vitamins show overall favorable preventative and therapeutic effects on depression. B vitamins are crucial for neurological function and mood regulation. Deficiencies in these vitamins are linked to depression. Studies on individual B vitamins show promise in improving depressive symptoms, particularly thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and folate. Vitamin C deficiency may heighten depressive symptoms, but its exact role is not fully

Vitamin metabolism and therapy in ophthalmology.

Vitamin deficiency states are important in the genesis of many ocular disorders. Deficiencies may be due to poor dietary intake, or to alterations in metabolism produced by some commonly prescribed medications or by certain diseases. Furthermore, some vitamins may exert important pharmacologic effects on the normal eye. The ocular effects of deficiencies and excesses of specific vitamins, and the therapeutic uses of each vitamin, are reviewed.

Burning mouth syndrome: results of screening tests for vitamin and mineral deficiencies, thyroid hormone, and glucose levels-experience at Mayo Clinic over a decade.

BACKGROUND: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a disorder characterized by chronic mouth pain in the absence of objective clinical abnormalities. Vitamin or mineral deficiencies may have a role in BMS, but data regarding the prevalence and relevance of hematinic deficiencies are conflicting. We aimed to determine the frequency of specific laboratory abnormalities in patients with BMS. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the results of screening blood tests in patients with BMS at our institution between January 2003 and December 2013. RESULTS: Among 659 patients with BMS, the most common decre

Deficiencies of vitamins in CAPD patients: the effect of supplementation.

Concentrations of the vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, C, folic acid, A, E and beta-carotene were determined in blood and 24-h dialysate in 44 CAPD patients. Twenty-five of these patients were studied during chronic treatment (mean 313 days, range 60-1034 days). Nineteen patients were studied during training. In a longitudinal study, 11 patients were analysed again after 77-507 (mean 238) days. In both patient groups a considerable portion of patients (11%-64%) had blood concentrations indicative of a deficiency of the vitamins B1, B6, C and folic acid. The average concentrations of these vitamins we
