PURPOSE: First rib fractures in children are typically associated with high-impact trauma; atraumatic etiologies remain understudied. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the presentation and management of pediatric first rib fractures in the absence of major trauma.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study of pediatric patients diagnosed with first rib fractures between 2000 and 2023 at a quaternary, free-standing children's hospital. Exclusion criteria were major trauma and baseline bone disease.
RESULTS: We identified 24 patients with a first rib fracture in the absence of major trauma

BACKGROUND: Slipping rib syndrome (SRS) is caused by abnormal subluxation of floating ribs, resulting in chronic pain and possible tissue damage. Its prevalence is often overlooked, as it shares symptoms with other musculoskeletal conditions, and is more common in young females and athletes. Symptoms include pain along the lower rib margin, aggravated by trunk movements, deep breathing and coughing. Treatment usually starts conservatively with physiotherapy and analgesics. In severe cases, extrapleural rib resection may be required.
CASE SUMMARY: In April 2023, a 24-year-old woman presented w…

BACKGROUND: Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS), although rarer in children, can significantly impact quality of life. Although surgical management in the adult population is well reported, data on transaxillary first rib resection (TFRR) in the pediatric population is scarce. We aimed to assess the outcomes of TFRR in pediatric patients with TOS.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on all patients aged 18 years or younger who underwent TFRR for symptomatic TOS at a single institution between 2012 and 2023. We described the treatment approach and long-term outcomes after TFRR.
RESULTS:

BACKGROUND: By combining existing Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data with the economic conditions of different regions, we can better understand disease trends and make more accurate estimations, facilitating effective public health interventions. Medical institutions can consequently allocate resources more efficiently. For patients, this helps lower disease risk and reduce the overall disease burden in affected areas.
METHODS: We analyzed health patterns in 204 countries using GBD 2021 methodologies and conducted separate analyses of disease burden in China and worldwide. We estimated inci

Rib bone stress injury (BSI) occurs most commonly in athletes performing repetitive upper body movements and results in significant time lost from training and competition. These injuries are seen in rowing, baseball, swimming, golf, weightlifting, and other throwing sports. Similar to BSI at other anatomical locations, a rib BSI often results from multiple factors including both thoracic/upper extremity biomechanics and metabolic factors affecting bone health. Although some rib BSIs are easier to detect, other injuries may present with vague rib or shoulder pain that can be misdiagnosed and r

BACKGROUND: Delayed hemothorax due to aortic injury is rare, and its delayed diagnosis can be fatal. Herein, we report a case of delayed hem … hemothorax following blunt thoracic trauma-particularly with fractures of the lower left posterior ribs, clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for aortic injury. Prompt recognition and surgical intervention are critical for patient survival in such cases.

Data regarding the outcome of canine rib chondrosarcoma is sparse and varied. While grade of tumour is associated with outcome for canine appendicular chondrosarcoma, the association of grade with outcome for canine rib chondrosarcoma is unclear. This study aimed to correlate the grade of canine rib chondrosarcoma with median survival time. Retrospectively, cases of primary rib chondrosarcoma were identified, and tumours were graded based on a 3-tier adapted human grading scheme. Twenty-two patients were included in the survival analysis. The median survival time was 1427 days (range: 27-3354

For rib remodeling surgery without incisions (RibXcar), a piezotome is used, which is a piezoelectric device that allows for selective and delicate manipulation of the bone, thanks to microvibrations that facilitate precise and smooth cuts. The piezotome, in its original form, requires the adaptation of the tip shape to perform costal surgery; therefore, Manzaneda's tool was created, which is composed of three parts: first, modification of the shape of the tip of the piezotome; second, the experimentation with materials for coating the tip of the piezotome; and third, the sterilization of the

Rib fractures are highly predictive of non-accidental trauma in children under 3 years old. Rib fracture detection in pediatric radiographs is challenging because fractures can be obliquely oriented to the imaging detector, obfuscated by other structures, incomplete, and non-displaced. Prior studies have shown up to two-thirds of rib fractures may be missed during initial interpretation. In this paper, we implemented methods for improving the sensitivity (i.e. recall) performance for detecting and localizing rib fractures in pediatric chest radiographs to help augment performance of radiology

Thoracotomy with rib spreading still remains the preferred approach for complex surgery. Rib fracture is considered a frequent involuntary event during this approach, but its real incidence has not been adequately investigated yet. In this study, we evaluated the incidence of rib fracture after thoracotomy, the possible risk factors and the relationship with post-operative pain and complications. We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of single-institution patients submitted to lateral thoracotomy from January 2016 to June 2023. Exclusion criteria were traumatic etiology and a medical

BACKGROUND: Thoracic injuries are a very common entity throughout all age groups. With rising numbers of geriatric patients, characteristics of this patient group need to be better defined. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of age on the outcome of thoracic trauma. In this project we provide a stratification of differentiated age groups regarding outcome parameter on rib fractures.
METHODS: The study employed a retrospective design using data from patients who sustained thoracic trauma and received treatment at a level I trauma center over a 5-year period. Patients with the

OBJECTIVE: Venous thoracic outlet syndrome (VTOS), a compression syndrome of the subclavian vein at the costoclavicular junction, is commonly treated with first rib resection. This invasive procedure carries a risk of serious complications. The purpose of this single-center cross-sectional study was to evaluate the long-term outcome of non-bony decompression by resection of the subclavius muscle and tendon and to provide a detailed description of the procedure.
METHODS: Patients who underwent rib-sparing decompression for VTOS between July 2014 and September 2023 were analyzed using clinical

INTRODUCTION: Rib fixation for ventilator dependent flail chest patients has become a mainstay of management in major trauma centres. However, the expansion of rib fixation for fractured ribs beyond this remains largely in the hands of enthusiasts with the benefits in non ventilator dependent groups largely unproven. Previous meta-analyses have largely included non-randomised and retrospective data, much of which is now more than two decades out of date. We wanted to perform an updated meta-analysis including only rigorous prospective trials which were randomised. Further we wanted to include …

BACKGROUND: Rib fractures are one of the most common traumatic injuries and may result in significant morbidity and mortality. Despite growing evidence, technological advances and increasing acceptance, surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) remains not uniformly considered in trauma centers. Indications, contraindications, appropriate timing, surgical approaches and utilized implants are part of an ongoing debate. The present position paper, which is endorsed by the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES), and supported by the Chest Wall Injury Society, aims to provide a review of t

OBJECTIVES: Aim of this work was the evaluation and validation of the AO/OTA classification of the anterior chest wall, here especially for the rib cartilage.
METHODS: Study design was a retrospective analysis of patients who were hospitalized with fractures of the thoracic wall in the years 2010-2016. This resulted in a collective of n = 124 patients. All fractures of the anterior chest wall were classified according to their location, dislocation and fracture type according to the AO classification. An analysis of possible subtypes was carried out.
RESULTS: 29.0% (36) of the patients had f
