Ecology of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Sinai: linking parasites, vectors and hosts.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected clinical form of public health importance that is quite prevalent in the northern and eastern parts of Egypt. A comprehensive study over seven years (January 2005-December 2011) was conducted to track CL transmission with respect to both sandfly vectors and animal reservoirs. The study identified six sandfly species collected from different districts in North Sinai: Phlebotomus papatasi, Phlebotomus kazeruni, Phlebotomus sergenti, Phlebotomus alexandri, Sergentomyia antennata and Sergentomyia clydei. Leishmania (-)-like flagellates were identified in

Spatial heterogeneity and temporal variations in Echinococcus multilocularis infections in wild hosts in a North American urban setting.

Echinococcus multilocularis, the causative agent of human alveolar echinococcosis, has the potential to circulate in urban areas where wild host populations and humans coexist. The spatial and temporal distribution of infection in wild hosts locally affects the risk of transmission to humans. We investigated the spatial and temporal patterns of E. multilocularis infection in coyotes and rodent intermediate hosts within the city of Calgary, Canada, and the association between spatial variations in coyote infection and the relative composition of small mammal assemblages. Infection by E. multilo

Leptospirosis risk increases with changes in species composition of rat populations.

Rats are major reservoirs of leptospirosis and considered as a main threat to biodiversity. A recent introduction of Rattus rattus to the island of Futuna (Western Polynesia) provided the opportunity to test if a possible change in species composition of rat populations would increase the risk of leptospirosis to humans. We trapped rodents on Wallis and Futuna and assessed Leptospira carriage in 357 rodents (Rattus norvegicus, R. rattus, Rattus exulans, and Mus domesticus) from 2008 to 2012. While Leptospira prevalence in rodents and the composition of rat populations on Futuna fluctuated with

Recovery and cryopreservation of epididymal sperm from agouti (Dasiprocta aguti) using powdered coconut water (ACP-109c) and Tris extenders.

The objective was to compare the use of powdered coconut water (ACP-109c; ACP Biotecnologia, Fortaleza, CE, Brazil) and Tris extenders for recovery and cryopreservation of epididymal sperm from agouti. The caudae epididymus and proximal ductus deferens from 10 sexually mature agoutis were subjected to retrograde washing using ACP-109c (ACP Biotecnologia) or Tris. Epididymal sperm were evaluated for motility, vigor, sperm viability, membrane integrity, and morphology. Samples were centrifuged, and extended in the same diluents plus egg yolk (20%) and glycerol (6%), frozen in liquid nitrogen, an

[Spread of Leishmania major to the north of Algeria].

Since a long time, Leishmania major and L. infantum foci in Algeria were geographically separated by the mountains of the Tell Atlas which represent a natural barrier. Recently, a new focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) has emerged in the village of El M'hir, located on the north side of the chain of the Tell Atlas, in the basin of the Soummam. During the period 2004-2010, 152 CL cases have been registered and 12 isolates were obtained from patients who declared never having been outside the village the last years. The identification of the parasites showed that all strains belonged to L maj

Use of aspiration method for collecting brain samples for rabies diagnosis in small wild animals.

In developing countries such as Brazil, where canine rabies is still a considerable problem, samples from wildlife species are infrequently collected and submitted for screening for rabies. A collaborative study was established involving environmental biologists and veterinarians for rabies epidemiological research in a specific ecological area located at the Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The wild animals' brains are required to be collected without skull damage because the skull's measurements are important in the identification of the captured animal species. For this purpose, samples from bats a

[Reasons of low epizootic activity of natural foci of plague in Russia at the beginning of the 21st century].

AIM: Establish the main reasons of low epizootic activity of natural foci of plague in Russian Federation in 2000-2009. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Multiyear data on the number of isolated Yersinia pestis strains, area of detected epizootic sites, amounts of the field material studied for plague were used to evaluate annual activity of natural foci. RESULTS: In the current decade mountain and high-mountain natural foci of plague were characterized by constant high epizootic activity. In plains and low-mountain natural foci a low periodic epizootic activity was noticed, a development of intra-epiz

Five new Mexican species of the flea genus Strepsylla Traub, 1950 (Siphonaptera: Ctenophthalmidae: Neopsyllinae: Phalacropsyllini) with a phylogenetic analysis.

The genus Strepsylla Traub is redescribed and compared with the other genera of the tribe Phalacropsyllini. Thirteen recognized species are distributed in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama, where they parasitize small rodents, especially mice of the genus Peromyscus. Five new species are reported and described (Strepsylla ixtlanensis n. sp., Strepsylla longicauda n. sp., Strepsylla queretana n. sp., Strepsylla tezontli n. sp., and Strepsylla vargasi n. sp.). Keys for the genera of the tribe and for the species of Strepsylla are included, and relevant notes for each species ar

Potential attractants for detecting and removing invading Gambian giant pouched rats (Cricetomys gambianus).

BACKGROUND: Native to Africa, Gambian giant pouched rats (Gambian rats; Cricetomys gambianus Waterh.) are a threatening invasive species on a Florida island, Grassy Key. Gambian giant pouched rats shifted from a domestic pet to invading species after suspected release from a pet breeder. Because of the large size of Gambian rats (weighing up to 2.8 kg), they pose a serious threat to native species (particularly nesting species) and agricultural crops, especially if Gambian rats invade mainland Florida. Also, Gambian rats pose a threat from disease, as they were implicated in a monkeypox outbre

Spread of ticks and tick-borne diseases in Germany due to global warming.

Tick-transmitted diseases like tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme Borreliosis have been well known in Germany for decades. Global climate changes may influence the emergence and reemergence of diseases. Ongoing research now gives an additional focus on other tick-borne pathogens such as Coxiella burnetii, Rickettsia conorii, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia spp., the causative agents of Q-fever, Mediterranean spotted fever, Anaplasmosis and Babesiosis, respectively. The epidemiology of these pathogens was investigated on ticks as well as on rodents, the main hosts. Therefore adults of Derma

Strategies for reducing the risk of Lyme borreliosis in North America.

The incidence of Lyme borreliosis continues to increase in the United States. In 1991, when Lyme borreliosis first became a nationally reportable disease to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a total of 9470 cases were reported; in contrast, by 2002 a total of 23,763 cases were reported, >2.5x the total in 1991. Area-wide acaricides can be highly effective in killing nymphal Ixodes scapularis, with >95% of nymphs killed in studies using cyfluthrin, deltamethrin, or carbaryl. The majority of residents living in households within the area hyperendemic for Lyme borreliosis will

[Short-term prediction of a change in the total stock of Daursk suslik fleas in the Transbaikal natural focus of plague].

Based on 20-year studies of changes in the total store of the imago of Daursk souslik fleas in the Transbaikal natural focus of plague and on observations of variations in some environmental factors, equations of the short-term prediction of the size of fleas have been constructed for each month (from May to September inclusive). The equations include from one to three predictors that significantly influence the dynamics in the abundance of exoparasites. A nonlinear regression analysis was used for statistical data processing. The results and reliability of short-term stepwise prediction of th

Spatial partitioning of host habitat by chewing lice of the genera Geomydoecus and Thomomydoecus (Phthiraptera: Trichodectidae).

Chewing lice, Geomydoecus and Thomomydoecus, coexist on pocket gophers, Thomomys spp. We investigated the spatial distribution of the 2 genera on their hosts and explored possible mechanisms of resource partitioning by chewing lice. Chewing lice appear to partition available host resources spatially, with Geomydoecus occurring primarily on the lateral and dorsal regions of the host, and Thomomydoecus occurring primarily on the lateral and ventral regions. Although spatial partitioning of the host habitat is evident, it does not appear to be explained by hair diameter. Spatial partitioning of t

Photic phase response curve in Octodon degus: assessment as a function of activity phase preference.

Light exposure during the early and late subjective night generally phase delays and advances circadian rhythms, respectively. However, this generality was recently questioned in a photic entrainment study in Octodon degus. Because degus can invert their activity phase preference from diurnal to nocturnal as a function of activity level, assessment of phase preference is critical for computations of phase reference [circadian time (CT) 0] toward the development of a photic phase response curve. After determining activity phase preference in a 24-h light-dark cycle (LD 12:12), degus were releas
