Can We Predict and Prevent Subclinical Depression in Adolescents?

The purposes of this article were to determine which risk factors are significant predictors of the occurrence of depression in adolescence and to discriminate among clinical, subclinical, and control groups. The sample consisted of 412 adolescents (61.7% female, 38.3% male) aged 13 to 17 years. Cognitive vulnerability factors for depression (i.e., dysfunctional attitudes, negative inferential style, ruminative response style) and psychosocial risk factors (i.e., negative life events, perceived social support) were measured. Subsequent discriminant function analysis indicated that it was possi

Psychological distress and the frequency of perfectionistic thinking.

Five studies tested the hypotheses that there are individual differences in the frequency of automatic thoughts involving perfectionism and that these thoughts are associated with psychological distress. Research with the Perfectionism Cognitions Inventory (PCI) established that this new measure has adequate psychometric properties, and high PCI scorers tend to spontaneously report perfectionistic thoughts in naturalistic situations. Additional research confirmed that frequent perfectionism thoughts account for unique variance in distress, over and above variance predicted by standard measures

An exploration into the relationship between insomnia and repetitive negative thinking among cancer survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Insomnia and repetitive negative thinking (RNT) are both prevalent among cancer survivors, yet little work has investigated their interrelationship. To explore the hypothesis that RNT and insomnia are related, we conducted secondary analyses on data from a pilot clinical trial of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) for cancer survivors. METHODS: This study analyzed survey data from 40 cancer survivors with insomnia who participated in a pilot randomized trial of CBT-I. Correlations and linear regression models were used to determine associations between aspects of RNT

Insecure Attachment to Parents and PTSD among Adolescents: The Roles of Parent-Child Communication, Perceived Parental Depression, and Intrusive Rumination.

Based on attachment theory and a social-cognitive model of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), this study examined the roles of parent-child communication, perceived parental depression, and intrusive rumination in the association between insecure attachment to parents and PTSD among adolescents following the Jiuzhaigou earthquake. In this study, 620 adolescents were recruited to complete self-report questionnaires. The results showed that the direct association between anxious attachment and PTSD was significant, but that between avoidant attachment and PTSD was non-significant. In addition

The role of cognitive factors in differentiating individuals with somatoform disorders with and without depression.

The present study, based on a cross-sectional design, was conducted in the primary care setting with patients presenting somatic symptoms suggestive of somatoform disorders (SFD). The main aim of the study was to determine whether cognitive variables could differentiate between patients with SFD alone and those who also present depressive symptoms suggestive of depression (SFD + depression). All participants (N = 796) completed validated self-report measures to assess somatic, depressive, and/or anxiety symptoms, as well as functional impairment, quality of life (QoL), and cognitive variables

A systematic review on mindfulness-based immersive interventions in depressive disorders.

Depressive disorders are characterized by persistent negative affect, rumination, and impaired emotion regulation, contributing substantially to global disease burden. As recurrent rumination and negative attentional biases are central cognitive mechanisms of depression, interventions targeting these processes have gained increasing attention. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) effectively treat depressive disorders but face adherence challenges, which immersive technology may resolve through multi-sensory stimulation and real-time feedback. This systematic review assesses the therapeutic

Blinded by bodies: Elevated eating disorder symptomatology is associated with increased attentional priority for thin bodies.

Selective processing of female thin-ideal body imagery is associated with greater body dissatisfaction, and eating disorder-specific rumination has been shown to mediate this relationship. Across two studies, we employed a modified rapid serial visual presentation task (similar to that used within the emotion-induced blindness literature), such that participants searched for a task-relevant target that was sometimes preceded by a thin body, non-thin body, or neutral task-irrelevant distractor. Our first experiment (N = 372) revealed a "body-induced blindness" in an unselected female sample, su

Neural evidence that disengaging memory retrieval is modulated by stimulus valence and rumination.

To remember information from our personal past we need to be in a cognitive state where we treat stimuli as cues for memory retrieval. In this study we considered whether participants could exert control and disengage from a memory state when it was no longer required for the task at hand. In particular, we examined whether this ability was affected by the valence of the stimuli and participant's rumination scores. After a study phase participants completed test blocks where the task switched every two trials between a memory task (retrieving information from the study phase) and a perceptual

Different coping strategies influence the development of PTSD among first-time mothers.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the different coping strategies for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), described in the non-obstetric trauma literature, with respect to first time postpartum women. STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective cohort study conducted between 2011 and 2013. Eligible women had a singleton pregnancy and delivered a healthy newborn at term. Five sets of relevant questionnaires were sent to the participants six weeks postpartum. Posttraumatic stress disorder was defined as per DSM-V criteria. RESULTS: One hundred and eighty eight completed questionnaires were considered for the

Are Worry and Rumination Specific Pathways Linking Neuroticism and Symptoms of Anxiety and Depression in Patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder and Mixed Anxiety-Depressive Disorder?

This study examines the relationships between neuroticism (higher-order vulnerability factor), the cognitive styles of worry, brooding and reflection (second-order vulnerability factors) and symptoms of anxiety and depression in three groups of patients: patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and with Mixed Anxiety-Depressive Disorder (MADD). One hundred and thirty four patients completed a battery of questionnaires including measures of neuroticism, worry, rumination (brooding and reflection), anxiety and depression. Multiple mediation analyses

The long-term effects of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy as a relapse prevention treatment for major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a relapse prevention treatment for major depressive disorder. METHOD: An observational clinical audit of 39 participants explored the long-term effects of MBCT using standardized measures of depression (BDI-II), rumination (RSS), and mindfulness (MAAS). RESULTS: MBCT was associated with statistically significant reductions in depression from pre to post treatment. Gains were maintained over time (Group 1, 1-12 months, p = .002; Group 2, 13-24 months, p = .001; Group 3, 25-34 months, p = .04). Depression scores in Group 3 did begin to

Words fail me: the verbal IQ deficit in inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Many chronic illnesses are accompanied by impaired cognitive functioning. In people with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), there is some research to suggest a decrement in verbal IQ (VIQ), when compared to people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and healthy controls. Although this is an important finding, it is necessary to ensure that such deficits are not due to methodological problems such as the failure to take into account pre-morbid functioning. METHODS: A total of 88 people (IBD, N = 29; IBS, N = 29; Controls, N = 30) completed the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intellige

Social anxiety, anxious self-preoccupation, and recall of self-relevant information.

Theoretical and empirical efforts concerning cognitive processes associated with anxiety have typically emphasized either cognitive deficits (i.e., reduced learning, memory, and task performance) or cognitive excesses (i.e., increased self-focused, ruminative thought). To date, evidence of these two types of cognitive processes has primarily been based on different types of sources (i.e., performance measures vs. self-reports), which precludes direct comparisons of the extent to which cognitive deficits and/or excesses characterize anxiety states. The present study attempted to directly compar

[Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy : current status and future applications].

Against the backdrop of dauntingly high prevalence rates of clinical depression and subsequent relapse, Segal, Teasdale and Williams (2002) sought to develop an intervention that would address the long-term sequence of depression. In the past decade, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy has been supported with a robust evidence base, highlighting its efficacy in the short, and long-term follow-up studies. Currently, novel adaptations of this intervention are being developed and piloted with a wide range of clinical issues that share amplified ruminative processes as a core feature of pathology.

Cognitive reactivity mediates the relationship between neuroticism and depression.

Although neuroticism has long been established as an important risk factor for depression, the mechanisms through which this temperamental predisposition translates into the occurrence of symptoms are still relatively unclear. This study investigated cognitive reactivity, i.e. the ease with which particular patterns of negative thinking are reactivated in response to mild low mood, as a potential mediator. Individuals with (N = 98) and without a previous history of depression (N = 83) who had provided neuroticism scores six years previously were assessed for cognitive reactivity and current sy

The role of domain-specific working memory and emotion regulation in the mathematics anxiety-performance relation among upper elementary students.

This study examined the role of domain-specific working memory and emotion regulation in the relation between mathematics anxiety and mathematics performance among 264 upper elementary students (Grades 3-5). Participants completed measures of mathematics testing and learning anxiety, verbal and numerical working memory, cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression, general anxiety, mathematics self-efficacy, and calculation. Results showed that verbal working memory, but not numerical working memory, mediated the relation between mathematics testing anxiety and calculation. Higher verbal work

Examination of the core cognitive components of cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy: an analogue investigation.

We aimed to examine the core elements of cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy that target distressing negative cognitions, cognitive restructuring (CR) and cognitive defusion (CD), respectively. Participants (N=142) recalled a saddening autobiographical event, identified a distressing thought it triggered, and completed a task that induced rumination on these cognitions. They then completed one of four brief interventions that targeted these emotionally charged cognitions: analogue versions of CR and CD, and two control interventions. The personal negative cogniti

Cognitive coping and depressive symptoms in the elderly: a longitudinal study.

The objective of the present longitudinal study was to examine the relationship between cognitive coping strategies and depressive symptoms at old age. At the two and a half year follow-up study, a community sample of 99 people aged 67 years and older filled out a self-report questionnaire comprising the Geriatric Depression Scale, the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire and a negative life events checklist. Cognitive coping strategies seemed to play an important role in relation to depressive symptoms in late life. Elderly persons with more depressive symptoms reported to use acceptanc

Evolutionary explanations of depression and cognitive control dysfunction: A literature review.

Cognitive control dysfunction, including impairments in inhibition, shifting, updating, and the balance between proactive and reactive control, is a robust feature of depression. Although these patterns are well documented, their origins and possible functions remain debated. This narrative review asks whether recurrent depressive cognitive-control profiles can be interpreted, in part, through evolutionary frameworks. Integrating Social Rank Theory, the Analytical Rumination Hypothesis, and Social Bargaining Theory, this review maps depressive control patterns onto putative functions related t

Anger Rumination as a Moderator of the Association between Factor 2 of Psychopathy and Proactive Aggression.

Objective: Scholars have identified psychopathic traits as facilitators of intimate partner violence (IPV). Analyzing anger management strategies might clarify how these personality traits contribute to violence proneness. One potential moderator to consider is the tendency to ruminate about anger (or anger rumination). However, the pattern of association between psychopathic traits and violence proneness differs depending on psychopathy factors and the subtypes of violence expression (reactive or proactive). Therefore, the main objective of this study was to examine whether the two factors of
