Climate seasonality and the health and well-being of older adults in rural Busia and Kilifi Counties, Kenya: SENIORS study - protocol for a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Older adults are particularly vulnerable to climate-related stressors such as extreme heat, food and water insecurity and displacement, all of which can worsen existing health conditions. This is further compounded by age-related physiological changes, pre-existing health conditions and social factors like isolation and limited mobility. With a growing population of older adults in low-income and middle-income countries, their vulnerability to climate change becomes a critical global public health issue and yet is understudied and needs urgent and comprehensive action. This study

Implementation of occupation-centred practice by occupational therapists in acute adult physical settings: A mixed method study in a regional and rural health service.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational therapy is underpinned by the belief that occupation facilitates health and wellbeing. However, evidence suggests that occupational therapists encounter challenges to implementing occupation-centred practice. The aim of this study was to investigate the uptake, acceptability and impact of a workplace intervention designed to enhance occupation-centred practice of occupational therapists in an acute adult physical context. METHODS: A concurrent mixed methods study using a pre-post design was employed. The setting was a regional and rural health service in Queensland.…

High prevalence of unrecognized chronic kidney disease in the Lolland-Falster Health Study: a population-based study in a rural provincial area of Denmark.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects 10-15% globally and is a marked independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Prevalence estimations are essential for public health planning and implementation of CKD treatment strategies. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and stages of CKD in the population-based Lolland-Falster Health Study, set in a rural provincial area with the lowest socioeconomic status in Denmark. Additionally, the study characterized participants with CKD, evaluated the overall disease recognition, including the awareness of CKD and compared it with other common co

Fecal carriage of ESBL-producing E. coli and genetic characterization in rural children and livestock in the Somali region, Ethiopia: a one health approach.

BACKGROUND: The emergence and spread of Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli pose significant challenges for treatment of infections globally. This challenge is exacerbated in sub-Saharan African countries, where the prevalence of ESBL-producing E. coli is high. This, combined with the lack of a strong and supportive healthcare system, leads to increased morbidity and mortality due to treatment failures. Notably, studies in Ethiopia have primarily focused on hospital settings, leaving a gap in understanding ESBL prevalence in rural communities, where human-animal

Prevalence of Dental Caries and Periodontal Disease, Access to Dental Services and Perception of Oral Health in Adolescents and Adults from a Rural Community in Angola.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has a direct impact on the gastrointestinal system, as up to 50% of fecal samples from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients contain detectable viral RNA despite a negative rhino-pharyngeal swab. This finding, together with an intestinal expression of angiotensin conversion enzyme 2 protein, suggests a possible fecal-oral transmission for SARS-CoV-2. Furthermore, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are common in COVID-19 patients including watery diarrhea, vomiting-particularly in children-nausea, and abdominal pain. Path

Assessing the reliability of phone surveys to measure reproductive, maternal and child health knowledge among pregnant women in rural India: a feasibility study.

OBJECTIVES: Efforts to understand the factors influencing the uptake of reproductive, maternal, newborn, child health and nutrition (RMNCH&N) services in high disease burden low-resource settings have often focused on face-to-face surveys or direct observations of service delivery. Increasing access to mobile phones has led to growing interest in phone surveys as a rapid, low-cost alternatives to face-to-face surveys. We assess determinants of RMNCH&N knowledge among pregnant women with access to phones and examine the reliability of alternative modalities of survey delivery. PARTICIPANTS: Wo

Patterns of pesticide usage in agriculture in rural Tanzania call for integrating agricultural and public health practices in managing insecticide-resistance in malaria vectors.

BACKGROUND: Unrestricted use of pesticides in agriculture is likely to increase insecticide resistance in mosquito vectors. Unfortunately, strategies for managing insecticide resistance in agriculture and public health sectors lack integration. This study explored the types and usage of agricultural pesticides, and awareness and management practices among retailers and farmers in Ulanga and Kilombero districts in south-eastern Tanzania, where Anopheles mosquitoes are resistant to pyrethroids. METHODS: An exploratory sequential mixed-methods approach was employed. First, a survey to characteri

The impact on health status in short- and long-terms of a novel and non-orthodox real-world COPD rehabilitation effort in rural India: an appraisal.

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation has been an integral part of management of COPD. Since the implementation of the standard rehabilitation protocol is hardly possible in the rural developing world, aiming to make a feasible alternate effort may be worthwhile. METHODS: COPD patients diagnosed through spirometry were first stabilized with 6 weeks of uniform pharmacotherapy. Subsequently, they were subjected to a curriculum-based intensive single-session intervention with education, bronchial hygiene, and exercise training. The latter involved whole body exercise, pursed lip breathing, and diaphragmati
