Latent profile analysis and predictive factors of learned helplessness among nursing students in clinical practice.

Existing research on learned helplessness among nursing interns often overlooks group heterogeneity and fails to explore its relationships with the clinical learning environment and self-esteem. A convenience sample of 381 nursing interns completed standardized questionnaires assessing their demographic characteristics, learned helplessness, clinical learning environment, and self-esteem. Latent profile analysis revealed three distinct profiles of learned helplessness among the nursing interns: "Low Helplessness-Low Hopelessness" (n = 127, 33.3%), "High Helplessness-Low Hopelessness" (n = 172,

Towards a Conceptual Participatory Framework to Promote Health Literacy in Adolescents by Integrating Self-Determination Theory and Game Design.

Adolescents are heavy users of digital media but often lack critical skills, increasing their vulnerability to harmful online content. The integration of game elements into learning and training offers a promising strategy to support positive behavioural change and strengthen adolescents' skills. This paper describes the development of a conceptual framework for Dress-DIGITARIAN, a serious game aimed at improving health literacy, coping skills, and self-esteem, grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT). The framework was constructed to generate higher-order understanding through a multi-leve

Prioritization of self-associated voices is enhanced by positive prosodic valence: Roles of individual explicit self-esteem in self-bias and positive self-bias.

The self-prioritization effect (SPE) refers to the preferential processing of self-relevant stimuli relative to those linked to others. Recent evidence suggests that even unfamiliar, external voices can elicit an auditory SPE once arbitrarily associated with the self, whereas it remains unclear whether this prioritization is modulated by stimulus valence. Across two experiments, the present study examined the prioritization of self-associated voices and the influence of prosodic valence on its magnitude. Experiment 1 adopted a voice-label matching task in which unfamiliar voices were associate

Feedback, feelings, and function: Interpersonal contexts and body image in adolescent girls' sport.

Participation in sport during adolescence offers numerous physical and psychosocial benefits, yet many girls disengage, often due to body image concerns. Body-related self-conscious emotions-such as shame, guilt, envy, embarrassment, and pride-may influence sport experiences and participation, but little is known about how the interpersonal sport context shapes these emotions. This study examined how 12 dimensions of the interpersonal sport context were associated with body-related self-conscious emotions among adolescent girl athletes, drawing on the tripartite influence model of body image a

Physical Activity and Adolescent Depression: The Moderating Effects of Self-Esteem, Sleep Quality and Social Support in Mental Health Interventions.

Depression among adolescents is a growing concern, with physical activity (PA) potentially playing a protective role. This research investigates the effect of PA on depressive symptoms and examines the moderating effects of self-esteem (SE), sleep quality (SQ) and social support (SS). This research aims to examine the association connecting PA and depression in adolescents, highlighting the roles of SE, SQ and SS in mediating these effects. An organised survey was used in a quantitative investigation design to assemble self-reported details on adolescents aged 13-18 years on PA, SE, SQ and dep

Cerebellum and self-esteem in children and adolescents: the moderating effect of depression.

INTRODUCTION: Self-esteem, a critical determinant of psychological well-being, develops concurrently with brain maturation during childhood and adolescence. Emerging evidence has identified the involvement of the cerebellum in self-related processing and its structural links to self-esteem. Depression, highly prevalent in this developmental period, affects both self-esteem and cerebellar functions, but their interaction remains understudied in pediatric populations. METHODS: A community sample of 103 children and adolescents (mean age = 12.23 years) underwent structural magnetic resonance ima

The Dynamics of Narcissus: Exploring the Covariation of Narcissistic States in Daily Life.

Advanced empirical research and clinical theory suggest that narcissistic personality states fluctuate over time. However, these fluctuations are poorly understood. To address this, we recruited 88 undergraduates to complete baseline measures and respond to smartphone prompts assessing narcissistic states and emotions in daily life seven times a day for 10 days. Narcissistic states were assessed using a state-adapted version of the Super Brief Pathological Narcissism Inventory (SB-PNI). Findings showed that within-person covariation of narcissistic states ranged from -.55 to .52 and was negati

Portrayal of Deaf characters in Korean movies.

Characters in movies have the potential to influence perceptions of how people see themselves. Deaf adolescents who have little opportunity to interact with Deaf peers or family members may be particularly drawn to Deaf people they see in the media. How the media portrays Deaf people may impact Deaf adolescents' self-perceptions of and language preferences. Yet little is known about the ways Deaf people are portrayed in movies, particularly films developed outside of the United States and not in English. In this study, we utilized content analysis to explore the portrayal of Deaf characters in

Associations Between Internalized HIV Stigma and Cognitive Function Among Older Women With HIV.

OBJECTIVES: Internalized HIV stigma refers to the negative beliefs, feelings, and attitudes that people with HIV (PWH) adopt about themselves due to societal HIV stigma. Internalized HIV stigma negatively affects mental health but less is known about this factor on cognitive function in PWH. This study examines associations between internalized HIV stigma and cognition among women aged 50+ with HIV. METHODS: Internalized HIV stigma was measured in the Women's Interagency HIV Study between 2013 and 2015 using the HIV stigma scale (negative self-image subscale). Executive function, processing s

Internalized Binegativity and Alcohol Expectancies Following an Experience of Binegativity: An Experimental Study.

OBJECTIVE: Bisexual individuals consistently report higher levels of alcohol use and are at greater risk for developing alcohol use disorder compared with heterosexual, gay, or lesbian individuals. According to the Minority Stress Model, this disparity may be attributed to bisexual-specific stressors such as experienced binegativity--discrimination or prejudice targeting bisexual identity--and internalized binegativity, or the internal adoption of such stigma. METHOD: The current study tested whether an acute experience of binegativity would influence internalized binegativity and alcohol-rel

Testing the mediating role of self-esteem on the relationship between parenting styles and subjective well-being of adolescents.

This study examines the complex interplay between parenting styles, self-esteem, and subjective well-being among impoverished adolescents in China, a demographic often marginalized in psycho-social research. Given the heightened vulnerability of this population to emotional and developmental challenges, understanding these dynamics is essential for designing effective interventions that address both economic hardship and psychological deprivation. Drawing on a sample of 1,262 adolescents from low-income urban and rural families in Q city, the research employs structural equation modeling to in

Childhood Maltreatment and Complex PTSD: A Systematic Literature Review.

There is established evidence that childhood maltreatment is associated with Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD), although the underlying mechanisms are not still precise. The current study aimed to systematically review empirical studies examining potential psychological factors linking childhood maltreatment to C-PTSD and the gaps in the literature. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses protocol, 19 original studies with a total of n = 1,075 subjects were analyzed. Five mediating processes were identified: (a) Emotional Processing as appr

On the importance of being clear about the level of analysis of interest: An illustration using the case of self-compassion.

OBJECTIVE: Theories about within-person (WP) variation are often tested using between-person (BP) research, despite the well-established fact that results may not generalize across levels of analysis. One possible explanation is vague theories that do not specify which level of analysis is of interest. We illustrate such a case using the construct of self-compassion. The factor structure at the BP level has been highly debated, although the theory is actually concerned with relationships at the WP level. METHOD: Multilevel confirmatory factor analysis was applied to experience-sampling data o

Seeing oneself as an unattractive loser: Similar interpretation and memory biases in adolescents with anorexia nervosa and adolescents with depression or anxiety.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterised by dysfunctional cognitive biases but these have rarely been investigated in adolescents with AN. The present study systematically assessed cognitive biases in adolescents with AN and addressed the questions of content-specificity (i.e., do biases occur only for eating disorder-related information?) and disorder-specificity (i.e., are biases unique to individuals with AN?). METHODS: Cognitive biases on three information processing levels (attention, interpretation, memory) and for two types of information content (eating disorder-related, non-
