Effects of self-assessed chewing ability, tooth loss and serum albumin on mortality in 80-year-old individuals: a 20-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: The association between dental status and mortality in community-dwelling older adults has been documented by several studies. The aim of this study was to analyze the contribution of self-assessed chewing ability, number of remaining teeth and serum albumin levels to mortality and the interactions between the three factors. METHODS: A 20-year follow-up study was conducted with 666 subjects aged 80 years (from 1996 to 2017) who resided in the 8 areas served by one health center in Iwate Prefecture. Health check-ups including physical fitness measurements were conducted at a meetin

Rationale and design of FORTH: a randomised controlled trial assessing the effectiveness of HIV self-testing in increasing HIV testing frequency among gay and bisexual men.

BACKGROUND: Gay and bisexual men (GBM) are a major risk group for HIV acquisition, yet the majority of higher-risk GBM test for HIV less often than recommended (3-6 monthly). HIV self-testing has the potential to increase testing frequency and improve awareness of personal HIV status. HIV self-tests have been approved in some countries, however there are concerns whether self-testing would increase HIV testing frequency enough to compensate for the reduced sensitivity of self-tests in early infection. We describe here a randomised controlled trial to assess the effectiveness of self-testing in

Intravascular ultrasound assessment of acute expansion of the balloon-expandable stent in heavy calcified iliac artery lesions or in lesions resistant to dilation by a self-expanding stent.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the acute stent expansion of a balloon-expandable stent (BES) by intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) in lesions with heavy calcification or in lesions resistant to dilation by a self-expanding stent (SES). METHODS: Primary stent placement using the Express LD was performed for 72 limbs in 56 patients. The BES was deployed both for ostial lesions of the common iliac artery (CIA) in 63 limbs and for additional dilation of an SES using a stent-in-stent maneuver in 9 limbs. Of the CIA ostial lesions, 71% (45 of 63) had heavy calcification. The primary endpoint was an acute ste

Exploring face validity of patient-reported outcomes assessing subjective norms, self-regulation, and illness perceptions in lumbar spinal stenosis: A think aloud study.

Outcome measures are essential in healthcare. This study aimed to use Think Aloud methodology to explore the face validity of three patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs)-the Subjective Norms, Self-Regulation, and Expected Illness Perception questionnaires-among individuals undergoing surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Twelve participants aged 59-88 verbalised their thoughts while completing the questionnaires. Content analysis revealed 96 issues across the 3 PROMs. The Expected Illness Perception and Subjective Norms questionnaires yielded the highest number of problems, particularl

Assessing young Kenyan women's willingness to engage in a peer-delivered HIV self-testing and referral model for PrEP initiation: A qualitative formative research study.

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective for HIV prevention, but uptake remains low, especially among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Kenya. A model in which trained AGYW using PrEP deliver HIV self-tests to their close friends and refer them to PrEP may help increase PrEP uptake in this population. To understand AGYW's potential willingness to engage in such a model, we conducted a qualitative formative study in Kenya. METHOD: We conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews (IDIs) with AGYW (16 to 24 years) in Kiambu County who were determined at risk of HI

Assessing Self-Efficacy and Communication Regarding Sexual Agreements among Men Who Have Sex with Men in the USA: Development and Validation of Two Novel Scales.

HIV disproportionately impacts men who have sex with men (MSM) in the USA. Building upon research on relationship constructs unique to MSM couples' HIV-prevention needs, we developed two new scales measuring sexual agreement self-efficacy (SASE) and importance of sexual agreement communication (ISAC). Following qualitative item development, we used two large independent samples of MSM couples (N1 = 441, N2 = 388) to conduct scale validation. Exploratory factor analyses indicated both SASE and ISAC to be unidimensional with 7 and 5 items (eigenvalues = 5.68 and 3.50), respectively, with strong

Brief 24-item staged assessment of suicidal and non-suicidal self-injury severity in Chinese college students with positive history: Development and initial validation of the STBI24K.

BACKGROUND: Among teenagers and young adults, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is highly prevalent and is closely related to suicide and mental disorders. However, existing assessment tools do not comprehensively cover the four stages of NSSI (idea-gesture-plan-behavior) and have limitations in cultural adaptability, assessment completeness, or clinical practicability. To date, few unified tools can simultaneously assess both suicide and NSSI within a single severity framework. METHODS: Of 2558 participants who completed the initial prescreening, those with a positive history were further asse

Exploring the Self-Efficacy of Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Cross-Sectional Assessment Focusing on a Low-Income, Less-Educated Community of Quetta City, Pakistan.

PURPOSE: Self-efficacy is an individual's belief in their ability to perform a specific task or achieve a desired outcome successfully. Self-efficacy plays a significant role in developing health sensibility in chronic patients. Within this context, low income and lack of education are important social determinants of health, overwhelmingly affecting overall well-being and health outcomes. We therefore conducted this study to establish the self-efficacy profile and identify the predictors of self-efficacy in a low-income, less-educated cohort of diabetes patients in Quetta city, Pakistan. Assessment of knowledge and self-efficacy among health professionals and clinical scientists following the Cameroon HIV/AIDS Research Forum (CAM-HERO 2022) research methodology and bioethics training.

To inform public health policymakers that the generation of local evidence-based knowledge is key. Research capacity in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) to generate medical knowledge is often weak and insufficiently resourced and efforts to tackle these challenges are not standardized. Continuous research training can equip researchers with the required knowledge and research skills, but its effectiveness largely depends on the quality and pertinence of the training methods used. We aim to assess the effectiveness of the Cameroon HIV/AIDS Research Forum (CAM-HERO) 2022 Research Methodol

Significant progress in improving Atorvastatin dissolution rate: Physicochemical characterization and stability assessment of self-dispersible Atorvastatin/Tween 80® nanocrystals formulated through wet milling and freeze-drying.

Atorvastatin (ATV) is a first-line drug for the treatment of hyperlipidemia. This drug presents biopharmaceutical problems, partly due to its low solubility and dissolution rate. In this work, nanocrystals of ATV stabilized with Tween 80® were designed by wet milling. A full factorial design was applied to optimize the process. Additionally, a cryoprotectant agent (maltodextrin, MTX) was identified, which allowed maintaining the properties of the nanocrystals after lyophilization. The storage stability of the nanocrystals was demonstrated for six months in different conditions. The obtained na

Tissue Dielectric Constant (TDC) as an Index of Skin Water in Women With and Without Breast Cancer: Upper Limb Assessment Via a Self-Contained Compact Measurement Device.

Previous work showed tissue dielectric constant (TDC) measurements at 300 MHz useful to evaluate local skin water and then a hand-held compact version provided values similar to the original multi-probe system when assessed in healthy subjects. Our current goals were to use the compact portable device to determine: 1) its utility in assessing agerelated differences between younger healthy women vs. women with breast cancer (BC); 2) upper-arm site differences in women with BC and 3) its utility and limitations of a single measurement vs. averaging triplicate measurements. A total of 84 women we

Design of TOLERANT: phase I/II safety assessment of intranodal administration of HSP70/mB29a self-peptide antigen-loaded autologous tolerogenic dendritic cells in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

INTRODUCTION: In rheumatoid arthritis (RA), immunosuppressive therapies may achieve symptomatic relief, but do not induce long-term, drug-free remission. Meanwhile, the lifelong use of immunosuppressive drugs confers increased risk for malignancy and infections. As such, there is an unmet need for novel treatments that selectively target the pathogenic immune response in RA by inducing tolerance to autoantigens. Autologous cell therapy using antigen-loaded tolerogenic dendritic cells (tolDCs) aims to reinstate autoantigen-specific immunological tolerance in RA and could potentially meet this n
