Lymnaea schirazensis, an overlooked snail distorting fascioliasis data: genotype, phenotype, ecology, worldwide spread, susceptibility, applicability.

BACKGROUND: Lymnaeid snails transmit medical and veterinary important trematodiases, mainly fascioliasis. Vector specificity of fasciolid parasites defines disease distribution and characteristics. Different lymnaeid species appear linked to different transmission and epidemiological patterns. Pronounced susceptibility differences to absolute resistance have been described among lymnaeid populations. When assessing disease characteristics in different endemic areas, unexpected results were obtained in studies on lymnaeid susceptibility to Fasciola. We undertook studies to understand this disea

A machine learning system with reinforcement capacity for predicting the fate of an ART embryo.

The aim of this work was to construct a score issued from a machine learning system with self-improvement capacity able to predict the fate of an ART embryo incubated in a time lapse monitoring (TLM) system. A retrospective study was performed. For the training data group, 110 couples were included and, 891 embryos were cultured. For the global setting data group, 201 couples were included, and 1186 embryos were cultured. No image analysis was used; morphokinetic parameters from the first three days of embryo culture were used to perform a logistic regression between the cell number and time.

[Consensus document on healthy lifestyles].

Proteins are a group of macronutrients that are vital to our lives, as they perform various functions, including structural, defensive and catalytic. An intake of 1.0-1.2 g/kg/body weight per day would be sufficient to meet our needs. Carbohydrate requirements constitute 50 % of the total caloric value and should be obtained mainly in the form of complex carbohydrates. In addition, a daily intake of both soluble and insoluble fiber is necessary. Regular consumption of extra virgin olive oil is an effective strategy for the prevention of cardiovascular, metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases.

Cryobiology in human assisted reproductive technology. Would Hippocrates approve?

Recent advances in human cryobiology have been substantially greater than the first slow step from freezing spermatozoa in animals in Italy, published in 1776 to observing motility in frozen-thawed human sperm in 1938(1). Reports on cryopreservation of rabbit oocytes (1947)(1) and births from fertilised frozen-thawed mice oocytes in 1977(1) were soon followed by the first human pregnancy (1983)(1) and birth (1984)1 following transfer of frozen-thawed embryos after in-vitro fertilisation (IVF). Whereas cryopreservation of human sperm and embryos in tertiary level fertility centres is now common

Predictive models of pregnancy based on data from a preconception cohort study.

STUDY QUESTION: Can we derive adequate models to predict the probability of conception among couples actively trying to conceive? SUMMARY ANSWER: Leveraging data collected from female participants in a North American preconception cohort study, we developed models to predict pregnancy with performance of ∼70% in the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Earlier work has focused primarily on identifying individual risk factors for infertility. Several predictive models have been developed in subfertile populations, with relatively low discriminat

Acute high-dose irradiation disrupts cell adhesion and Silk-Ovarioid formation in human primary ovarian cells.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy is a cornerstone of cancer treatment; however, its effects on healthy ovarian somatic cells remain largely unexplored. This study addresses this gap by investigating how human cortical and medullary primary ovarian cells (cPOCs and mPOCs, respectively) respond to acute, high-dose X-ray exposure in vitro. METHODS: Ovarian tissue was obtained from eight patients (aged 23–36 years) undergoing gender-affirming surgery at Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge, Sweden. The tissue was separated into cortex and medulla and dissociated into cPOCs and mPOCs. Monolayer cultu

Advancing palliative medicine training in adolescent and young adult care: a needs assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs), defined as individuals aged 15-39 years, face unique medical, psychosocial, and existential challenges when living with life-limiting illness. Despite evidence supporting early palliative care integration, Canadian adult palliative care curricula lack formalized AYA-specific competencies. Healthcare providers consistently report insufficient preparation in this area. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional needs assessment survey was administered nationally to physicians who completed Canadian adult palliative care residency training between 201

Effects of stressful life events on ART treatment outcomes: a prospective study on the role of individual and personality characteristics and psychological health conditions.

BACKGROUND: Infertility research highlighted that early exposure to stressful life events (SLEs) and childhood adversities are significantly associated not only with women's psychological health, but also with outcomes of assisted reproductive technologies. Nevertheless, there is a lack of studies adopting a multidimensional and transactional approach exploring how early life and family-related stressors potentially influence treatment outcomes through multiple interacting variables. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to test the associations between stressful life events and ART treatment ou

Elevated log uric acid-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (UHR) as a predictor of increased female infertility risk: insights from the NHANES 2013-2020.

BACKGROUND: Infertility is a multifaceted condition influenced by metabolic and biochemical factors. Uric acid (UA) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) may individually affect reproductive health. The UA-to-HDL-C ratio (UHR), an emerging indicator of chronic inflammation and metabolic status, may be associated with infertility because of its connections to metabolic disorders, disrupted reproductive processes, and other related factors. Nevertheless, evidence of the relationship between the UHR and infertility remains limited and controversial. Therefore, potential associations we

Evidence for persistent multilocus genotypes of Biomphalaria pfeifferi in a natural population in Kenya, with implications for transmission of Schistosoma mansoni.

BACKGROUND: Biomphalaria pfeifferi, a predominantly self-fertilizing freshwater snail, is the world's most important intermediate host for Schistosoma mansoni, one of the causative agents of schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease affecting millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa. We sought to determine whether we could identify distinct and persistent lineages of B. pfeifferi within a natural stream habitat in western Kenya, indicative of their asexual descent. We also sought to determine whether infections by S. mansoni or other trematodes were associated with particular lineages. ME

A Comparison of Kenyan Biomphalaria pfeifferi and B. Sudanica as Vectors for Schistosoma mansoni, Including a Discussion of the Need to Better Understand the Effects of Snail Breeding Systems on Transmission.

In Kenya, schistosomes infect an estimated 6 million people with >30 million people at risk of infection. We compared compatibility with, and ability to support and perpetuate, Schistosoma mansoni of Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Biomphalaria sudanica, 2 prominent freshwater snail species involved in schistosomiasis transmission in Kenya. Field-derived B. pfeifferi (from a stream in Mwea, central Kenya) and B. sudanica (from Nawa, Lake Victoria, in western Kenya) were exposed to S. mansoni miracidia isolated from fecal samples of naturally infected humans from Mwea or Nawa. The Netherlands Chlamydia cohort study (NECCST) protocol to assess the risk of late complications following Chlamydia trachomatis infection in women.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) among young women, can result in serious sequelae. Although the course of infection is often asymptomatic, CT may cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), leading to severe complications, such as prolonged time to pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy, and tubal factor subfertility. The risk of and risk factors for complications following CT-infection have not been assessed in a long-term prospective cohort study, the preferred design to define infections and complications adequately. METHODS: In the
