Focus groups for developing a peer mentoring program to improve self-management in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease.

OBJECTIVES: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) presents challenges for self-management in many areas. A peer mentoring program may offer advantages over other forms of self-management interventions because youth may be more receptive to learning self-management skills from a peer than from a parent or professional. The purpose of the present study was to identify themes from focus groups to inform development of a peer mentoring program for improving self-management in pediatric IBD. METHODS: Focus groups were conducted for youth ages 12 to 17, stratified by age (3 groups; n = 14), young adults…

[Eduard Lent (1831-1911): founder and supporter of public health care, social institutions, and physician self-management].

Modern urology owes much to our predecessors. Researchers in the 20th century were able to develop their specialist techniques and their professional independence on the basis of the fundamental studies and measures carried out by their predecessors in the 19th century. As a medical practitioner, Eduard Lent provided pioneering solutions to the three major sociomedical problems of his time, namely wide-spread epidemics like cholera, social inequalities, and lack of organization of the medical profession. His answer are to be found in the organization of public healthcare, establishment of suit

Clinical application of self-expanding metallic stent in the management of acute left-sided colorectal malignant obstruction.

AIM: To summarize our experience with the application of self-expanding metallic stent (SEMS) in the management of acute left-sided colorectal malignant obstruction. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all patients undergoing placement of SEMS between April 2000 and January 2004 was performed. RESULTS: Insertion of SEMS was attempted in 26 patients under fluoroscopic guidance with occasional endoscopic assistance. The sites of lesions were located in splenic flexure of two patients, left colon of seven patients, sigmoid colon of eight patients and rectum of nine patients. The intended u

A mixed methods study to evaluate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a self-managed exercise programme versus usual physiotherapy for chronic rotator cuff disorders: protocol for the SELF study.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder pain is the third most common reason for consultation with a physiotherapist and up to 26% of the general population might be expected to experience an episode at any one time. Disorders of the shoulder muscles and tendons (rotator cuff) are thought to be the commonest cause of this pain. The long-term outcome is frequently poor despite treatment. This means that many patients are exposed to more invasive treatment, e.g. surgery, and/or long-term pain and disability.Patients with this disorder typically receive a course of physiotherapy which might include a range of treat

A qualitative investigation of experiences of care and illness perceptions related to self-management behaviors in chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) requires active self-management to slow progression, yet adherence is often low. To inform intervention development, this qualitative study explored CKD patients' illness perceptions and care experiences, and examined how these factors may interact to shape self-management. METHODS: Eighteen adults with CKD stages 2-5 were recruited from a nephrology clinic and interviewed immediately after routine care encounters. Semi-structured interviews were analyzed using both inductive and deductive reflexive thematic analysis (informed by the Common-Sense Model…

Spatial burden and self-managed safety in peritoneal dialysis: a qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis is promoted for its spatial flexibility compared to in-center hemodialysis. However, this flexibility entails a significant relocation of clinical responsibility, requiring patients to manage infection control and medical logistics within non-institutional settings. While spatial factors-including housing conditions, storage capacity, and environmental cleanliness-are critical to modality sustainability, they are often reduced to logistical metrics in clinical consultations. This study investigates the concrete mechanisms through which patients evaluate and mana
