An insertion sequence of 72 nucleotides prepared from a polylinker sequence of plasmid pUC18 was introduced at nucleotide position 702 of the 5' noncoding sequence (742 nucleotides long) of the genome of the Sabin strain of poliovirus type 1 by using an infectious cDNA clone of the virus strain.
