Association Between Sinus Membrane Thickness and Membrane Perforation in Lateral Window Sinus Augmentation: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Association between Schneiderian membrane thickness and membrane perforation is examined in lateral window sinus augmentation. METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed records of 551 patients who underwent lateral sinus augmentation at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts, from June 1, 2006 to May 31, 2015. Preoperative cone-beam computed tomography images were analyzed to evaluate possible association among membrane thickness, residual bone height, and membrane perforation. Data were evaluated using Mann-Whitney U test at P <0.05. RESULTS: Total 16

Safe sinus lift: use of acrylic stone trimmer to avoid sinus lining perforation.

Iatrogenic injury to the maxillary sinus membrane is a common complication during direct sinus lift procedures. The most common cause is perforation of the Schneiderian membrane using a tungsten-carbide round bur no.6. We propose a safe technique in which an acrylic stone trimmer is used to create a window in the maxillary antrum thereby minimizing the risk of injury to the delicate sinus membrane.

Implant over implant: an alternative method for solving malpositioned osseointegrated implants at the sinus floor.

An implant was malpositioned and osseointegrated at the maxillary sinus floor with no complications. However, unexpected bone formation over the implant made the implant nonfunctional. Because the patient rejected the removal of the implant, it was left in place while another short implant was placed into the newly formed bone in approximately the same position as the old implant to restore the posterior maxillary tooth. Within 6 months, the new implant over the old asymptomatic implant was functional. Radiographs revealed osseointegration and stable periimplant marginal bone level with no sig

Posterior maxillary sandwich osteotomy combined with sinus grafting with bone morphogenetic protein-2 for alveolar reconstruction for dental implants: report of four cases.

Four patients underwent posterior sandwich osteotomy combined with sinus floor grafting using bone morphogenetic protein-2 and other grafting materials. The patients were treated over a period of 4 years. Two to four implants were placed in each site subsequently. Of the 12 implants placed, none failed. Alveolar crest bone levels appeared to be stable over time, with an average vertical gain of about 5 mm. Overall vertical gain, including the sinus graft, exceeded 13 mm in all patients. The procedure appears to hold promise for combined vertical alveolar defects and prominent pneumatization of

Guided bone regeneration using collagen membranes for sinus augmentation.

We investigated the effect of guided bony regeneration using collagen membranes for sinus augmentation in the first maxillary molars of 18 adult female beagle dogs. The teeth were extracted bilaterally and the sinus floors were lifted with simultaneous implantation. The grafted material composed of a combination of autografts and Bio-oss in a 2:1 ratio. On the experimental side in each dog, collagen membrane was folded at the lateral osteotomy window, at the apex of the implants, and at a certain part of the palatal bone. On the opposite (control) side, the collagen membrane covered the osteot

Management of a Large Schneiderian Membrane Perforation and Repair of the Missing Maxillary Lateral Wall Using a Collagen Barrier Alone in a Patient With Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Sinus floor augmentation (SFA) to aid in implant placement has been shown to be very predictable. A history of membrane perforation or intraoperative Schneiderian membrane perforation (SMP) is one of the most frequent complications of SFA. In this case report, the management of a large preexisting SMP with the aid of a collagen barrier in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is described. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old male presented for retreatment of an endodontically treated maxillary molar (tooth #14). The endodontic consultation r…
