Exploring the use of smartphone monitoring for young adults with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC): a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Smartphone ecological momentary assessment (Smart EMA) has the potential to address limitations in standardised cross-sectional self-report assessments. Young adults with rare genetic conditions, including Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), may further benefit from Smart EMA as it may help overcome associated cognitive difficulties in self-report and mental health stigma. Framework analysis was used to explore the hypothetical acceptability of the use of Smart EMA in monitoring the daily experiences of young adults with TSC. RESULTS: 14 young adults with TSC (Female = 9, age range 1…

Real-Time Smartphone Monitoring Assessments as a Cognitive Biomarker of Alzheimer Disease: Protocol for a Development Study.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis and monitoring of Alzheimer disease (AD) currently rely on clinician-administered, in-person, and cross-sectional pen-and-paper cognitive assessments. While clinically validated, these measures are time-intensive, infrequently administered, and limited in their ability to detect early, subtle, or short-term cognitive changes. Thus, more frequent, ecologically valid assessments are critical to improving sensitivity to early cognitive impairment and disease progression. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop and pilot a smartphone-based assessment battery that combines …

Cup and Disc Segmentation in Smartphone Handheld Ophthalmoscope Images with a Composite Backbone and Double Decoder Architecture.

Glaucoma is a visual disease that affects millions of people, and early diagnosis can prevent total blindness. One way to diagnose the disease is through fundus image examination, which analyzes the optic disc and cup structures. However, screening programs in primary care are costly and unfeasible. Neural network models have been used to segment optic nerve structures, assisting physicians in this task and reducing fatigue. This work presents a methodology to enhance morphological biomarkers of the optic disc and cup in images obtained by a smartphone coupled to an ophthalmoscope through a de…

DeepMonitoring: a deep learning-based monitoring system for assessing the quality of cornea images captured by smartphones.

Smartphone-based artificial intelligence (AI) diagnostic systems could assist high-risk patients to self-screen for corneal diseases (e.g., keratitis) instead of detecting them in traditional face-to-face medical practices, enabling the patients to proactively identify their own corneal diseases at an early stage. However, AI diagnostic systems have significantly diminished performance in low-quality images which are unavoidable in real-world environments (especially common in patient-recorded images) due to various factors, hindering the implementation of these systems in clinical practice. H…
