Cytoplasmic ERβ Localization and NTS/NTSR1 Expression in Uterine Leiomyosarcoma: An Immunohistochemical Insight.

Uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare and aggressive malignancy with diagnostic challenges, particularly in cases with overlapping histological features with atypical leiomyoma or smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential. We report a comparative immunohistochemical analysis of LMS, leiomyoma, and adjacent myometrium obtained from a 40-year-old woman with discordant pathological diagnoses. LMS tissue showed increased Ki67 and NTS/NTSR1 immunoreactivity together with a distinctive cytoplasmic localization of estrogen receptor beta (ERβ), in contrast to the predominantly nuclear loc…

[Types of myoepithelial cell proliferation in dyshormonal breast dysplasias and benign breast tumors].

Myoepithelial cells (MC) were identified and types and forms of their hyperplasia in dysplasias and bening mammary gland tumors in dog and man were studied by indirect Coons' method using highly purified monospecific antiserum to smooth muscle myosin and by performing alkaline phosphatase test. Operation material from 75 patients and 12 dogs was studied by immunohistochemical method and from 26 persons and 12 dogs by histochemical method. Comparative analysis of immunohistochemical and histochemical identification of MC revealed differences in the results of staining in 7 out of 38 observation

Diffuse Esophageal Leiomyomatosis and the Surgical Challenges Encountered.

Diffuse esophageal leiomyomatosis (DEL) is a rare condition characterized by the growth of multiple benign smooth muscle tumors (leiomyomas) in the esophagus. These tumors can cause obstruction and functional impairment of the esophagus, leading to symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, chest pain, and weight loss. The disease can present with leiomyomas or glomerular nephropathy in other body parts, hearing defects, astigmatism, or myopia (Alport's syndrome). However, isolated cases are also reported in the literature. Surgical management of DEL presents several challenges due to the locatio…

GIST is not all that it seems.

We present a 41-year-old female who was admitted to our hospital with a history of 2-month epigastric pain and vomiting. Physical examination was normal. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed a sessile submucosal tumor with central ulceration in the gastric body-antrum. Biopsies revealed a gastric mucosa without changes. Nevertheless, endoscopic ultrasound-guided biopsies showed interlacing bundles of spindle cells. The immunohistochemical study was negative for CD117 and smooth muscle actin and positive for S100 protein. A CT scan identified a heterogeneous mass in the stomach wall.

Endovascular treatment of sporadic renal angiomyolipoma presenting with Wunderlich syndrome.

Angiomyolipomas are benign renal hamartomas with - fat, smooth muscle, and abnormal blood vessel (tortuous, dysmorphic) components. The risk of hemorrhage is related to size of the tumor, presence of aneurysm, associations with tuberous sclerosis. In this case report we review the case of a 42-year-old woman presenting with acute flank pain and decreased hemoglobin, who was diagnosed with AML with right renal artery pseudo aneurysm on CT. Subsequent coil embolization of feeding vessels and using PVA particles was successfully done. Selective embolization remains a minimally invasive, attractiv

Uterine Lipoleiomyoma Presenting With Pelvic Pain in a Post-Menopausal Woman.

Uterine leiomyomas (fibroids) are the most common tumor of the reproductive system in women between menarche and menopause. Uterine lipoleiomyomas are a rare variant of leiomyoma, consisting of smooth muscle cells admixed with adipocytes. Herein is the case of a 70-year-old female who presented with acute pelvic pain and a palpable pelvic mass. A computed tomography scan of her abdomen and pelvis demonstrated a large, circumscribed, fat and soft tissue density, uterine mass suggestive of a lipoleiomyoma. Histopathology examination of the resected specimen after total abdominal hysterectomy con

Duodenal Leiomyosarcoma Presenting with Gastrointestinal Bleeding and Obstruction: A Case Report.

Duodenal leiomyosarcoma is a rare condition with a poor prognosis. Early diagnosis of duodenal leiomyosarcoma is challenging because it presents with nonspecific symptoms and endoscopic biopsies usually do not enable a definitive diagnosis. Duodenal leiomyosarcomas are diagnosed on the basis of the histopathological identification of a mesenchymal lesion composed of malignant tumor cells that on immunohistochemical examination is positive for smooth muscle actin and desmin. We report the case of a 38-year-old man who presented with gastrointestinal bleeding and obstruction who was diagnosed wi

Leiomyosarcoma of the Inferior Vena Cava Confirmed by Aspiration Biopsy With a Catheter During Digital Subtraction Angiography.

Leiomyosarcoma of the vascular origin is a rare malignant tumor. It originates from the smooth muscle cells of the media with intra- or extraluminal growth, and in most cases it arises in the inferior vena cava. The diagnosis is often delayed because the clinical symptoms of this disease are often nonspecific. Accurate diagnosis of inferior vena cava leiomyosarcoma (IVCLMS) needs histologic confirmation. We report a case of IVCLMS histologically confirmed by aspiration biopsy with a catheter during digital subtraction angiography presenting with pulmonary emboli in a 65-year-old man.

An unusual karyotype in leiomyoma: Case report and literature review.

Vascular leiomyoma are uncommon, clinically benign smooth muscle tumors. Here we report a case of an otherwise typical leiomyoma with unusual cytogenetic changes including t(1;10). Reports from the existing literature suggest that approximately 40-50% of leiomyomas contain nonrandom chromosomal abnormalities of which a subset is tumor specific. t(12;14)(q15;q24) is one of the most common translocations, which occur in approximately 20% of karyotypes. Additional aberrations include del(7)(q22-q32), trisomy 12, and 6p21 rearrangements. Other recurrent abnormalities include monosomy 22, monosomy …

Primary carcinoid tumor arising in a mature teratoma of the kidney: a case report and review of the literature.

Primary carcinoid tumor, especially that arising in a mature teratoma of the kidney, is extremely rare; only 3 cases have been reported in the world literature to date. Because of the rarity of the lesion, its histogenesis and prognosis are unknown. We report a case of primary renal carcinoid tumor occurring in a mature teratoma in a 30-year-old woman. A computed tomographic scan of the abdomen revealed a mass in the left kidney containing dense calcification with minimal contrast enhancement. Histologically, the tumor was composed of trabecular and anastomosing ribbonlike nests, identical to

Tumors of the rat kidney induced by nitrosourea compounds.

Apart from other lesions, 51 renal neoplasms were induced in rats by administration of methylethy-, dimethyl- and phenylmethylnitrosourea. 3 tumors originated from the renal pelvis and were classified as transitional cell papilloma (1) or transitional cell carcinoma (2). 48 neoplasms were considered as "mesenchymal tumors". These growths were regarded as rat kidney specific tumors. They display a wide spectrum of histological structures: spindle cells which are capable to differentiate into smooth muscle cells, fibroblasts, angioblasts, fat cells, and even into cartilage thus forming the typic

Psammomatoid ossifying fibroma in the extraconal space: a case report.

A 24-year-old patient with left eye proptosis and intermittent pain for 5 months was admitted to our hospital. Physical examination revealed neither extra ocular muscle limitations nor visual field defects. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a multicystic mass in the left extraconal space compressing the superior oblique muscle and adjacent frontal lobe. Layered hemorrhage was observed within the lesion in the 1-month follow-up MRI. Dynamic contrast enhanced imaging showed mild increased perfusion of the surrounding peripheral portion. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy showed an increased

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors--definition, clinical, histological, immunohistochemical, and molecular genetic features and differential diagnosis.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. They are defined here as KIT (CD117, stem cell factor receptor)-positive mesenchymal spindle cell or epithelioid neoplasms primary in the GI tract, omentum, and mesentery. GISTs typically present in older individuals and are most common in the stomach (60-70%), followed by small intestine (20-25%), colon and rectum (5%), and esophagus (<5%). Benign tumors outnumber the malignant ones by a wide margin. Approximately 70% of GISTs are positive for CD34, 20-30% are positive for smooth

An ultrastructural pathologist's views on fibroblasts, modified smooth muscle cells, wound healing, stenosing arteriopathies, Kawasaki disease, Dupuytren's contracture, and the stroma of carcinomas.

It wasn't until 1960 that the dense bodies of the peripheral actin arrays of fibroblasts were finally visualized, i.e., stress fibers (SFs). Mistakenly assumed that its SFs turned the fibroblast into a unique cell situated somewhere in a continuum between it and a smooth muscle cell (SMC), it was descriptively named a "myofibroblast" (MF). Automatically, spindle cells with SFs and/or smooth muscle actin by SMA IHC-staining, became MFs, although endothelial cells, pericytes, modified SMCs (mSMC), and myoepithelial cells all contain SFs. An invisible "intermediate" cell was hypothesized to exist

Melanotic PEComa: A Rare But Distinctive Subtype Analyzed in a Series of 7 Cases.

Perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasms (PEComas) are tumors of uncertain cell lineage that show a strong female predominance. Their hallmark is the presence of combined smooth muscle and melanocytic differentiation. In most cases, melanocytic differentiation is detectable only by immunohistochemistry, but there are rare reports of PEComa with extensive melanin accumulation (so-called "melanotic PEComa"). Here we report a clinicopathologic series of 7 melanotic PEComas that occurred across a wide patient age range of 21 to 82 years (median: 41 y) and with a wide anatomic distribution, includin

PEComa of the Adrenal Gland: A Clinicopathologic Series of 7 Cases.

PEComas are a family of mesenchymal neoplasms composed of histologically distinctive perivascular epithelioid cells which demonstrate myomelanocytic differentiation. PEComas of the adrenal gland are very rare and can represent a considerable diagnostic challenge given their morphologic overlap with more common adrenal cortical neoplasms. We present the clinicopathologic features of 7 primary adrenal PEComas. The cohort comprised 5 male and 2 female patients with a median age of 63 years (range: 31 to 71 y). One patient had Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome and another had Lynch syndrome; however, none h

Collagenous fibroma (desmoplastic fibroblastoma): report of four cases and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Collagenous fibroma (desmoplastic fibroblastoma) is poorly recognized and may be mistaken for other benign or even malignant spindle-cell tumors of soft tissue because of the small number of reported cases. DESIGN: Collagenous fibromas resected from four adult women were studied histologically and immunohistochemically. RESULTS: The tumors were well-circumscribed firm masses, measuring from 1.0 to 13.8 cm (mean, 5.5 cm) across the greatest diameter, located in the subcutaneous or deep soft tissue of the shoulder, thigh, back, and neck. Each of the tumors was characterized by a pa

Pathological features and clinical outcomes of hemangioblastoma in the spinal cord of three dogs.

Hemangioblastomas are rare intramedullary vascular tumors. Their biological nature is considered benign, but there is little information in dogs. This report describes histopathological and immunohistochemical features and postoperative clinical courses of three dogs to expand the current knowledge of this tumor. Histopathological examination revealed the proliferation of neoplastic stromal cells with irregularly arranged blood vessels and clusters of lymphocytes. Immunohistochemically, neoplastic stromal cells were immunolabeled for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), neuron specific anti

Oral Leiomyoma in a Pediatric Patient: A Diagnostic Challenge.

A nodular lesion of the tongue incorporates a spectrum of entities from reactive to malignancy. A diagnostic dilemma arises when a nodular, solitary, and firm submucosal mass appears in the oral cavity of a patient. To reach a definitive diagnosis, a crucial investigation protocol needs to be followed. Leiomyomas are benign tumors that rarely occur in the oral cavity. They usually affect patients within the fourth to fifth decades of life. We report a rare case of leiomyoma of the tongue in a 12-year-old child patient. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed the positivity of tumor cells for alp
