From coordination to normativity in social tinkering.

The social tinkering model convincingly explains how local coordination processes give rise to shared practices and conventions. However, it remains unclear whether such mechanisms suffice to account for normativity in the strong sense. Using contemporary language models as a comparative case, coordination alone does not appear sufficient to generate normatively binding standards. The transition to normativity likely requires additional conditions - such as public accountability, sanctions, and stable social roles - that merit more explicit integration within the framework.

Climate Change and Its Impact on the Incarcerated Population: A Descriptive Review.

This descriptive review article describes climate change and its detrimental effects on incarcerated populations. Case examples are provided of specific natural disasters and deaths due to overheating temperatures. Because public health and social work aims to improve the health and social welfare of vulnerable populations, the authors explain why climate change should be considered a priority area in both fields. Examples are provided on how to improve conditions for the 2.4 million men, women, and youth who are incarcerated.

Letting go of yesterday: Effect of distraction on post-event processing and anticipatory anxiety in a socially anxious sample.

According to cognitive models, post-event processing (PEP) is a key factor in the maintenance of social anxiety. Given that decreasing PEP can be challenging for socially anxious individuals, it is important to identify potentially useful strategies. Although distraction may help to decrease PEP, the findings have been equivocal. The primary purpose of this study was to examine whether a brief distraction period immediately following a speech would lead to less PEP the next day. The secondary aim was to examine the effect of distraction following an initial speech on anticipatory anxiety for a

Family attitudes and patient social adjustment in a longitudinal study of outpatient schizophrenics receiving low-dose neuroleptics: the family's view.

Adverse effects of neuroleptic medication have led to the attempt to develop alternative strategies for the treatment of schizophrenia, but it is generally conceded that these strategies may have their own negative outcomes in the form of symptom exacerbation, reduced social performance and worsened family interactions. This paper examines the effect of one such strategy, low doses of medication, on the social adjustment of and family response to chronic schizophrenic outpatients. Patients who were randomly assigned to either a low-dose or standard-dose condition were rated by their families o

Patterns of Social Risk Factors and Associations With Health Outcomes: Findings From a Latent Class Analysis.

IntroductionWith growing attention to the role of social factors in shaping health, efforts have emerged to integrate social risk information into population health surveillance and healthcare delivery. However, current approaches to address social risk tend to focus on responding to each risk factor in isolation, overlooking the interconnected nature of multiple social risks that often cluster together.MethodsThis study used latent class analysis to identify profiles of co-occurring social risk using a national sample of 110,028 adults across 17 U.S. states.ResultsThree profiles emerged: Low

Comparison of attention training and cognitive therapy in the treatment of social phobia: a preliminary investigation.

BACKGROUND: Prominent models of social phobia highlight the role played by attentional factors, such as self-focused attention, in the development and maintenance of social phobia. Elevated self-focused attention is associated with increases in self-rated anxiety. Treatments that aim to modify and change attentional processes, specifically self-focused attention, will have a direct effect on social phobia symptoms. Thus, Attention Training targets attentional focus. AIM: The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy of Attention Training in comparison to an established treatment for soc

Social anxiety and vulnerability for problematic drinking in college students: the moderating role of post-event processing.

Socially anxious college students are at increased risk for engaging in problematic drinking (i.e. heavy or risky drinking) behaviors that are associated with the development of an alcohol use disorder. The present study examined whether post-event processing (PEP), repeatedly thinking about and evaluating one's performance in a past social situation, strengthens the association between social anxiety and vulnerability to problematic drinking among college students. Eighty-three college drinkers with high or low social anxiety participated in a social interaction task and were exposed to a man

Generative tension and social risk management surrounding sexualised drug use practice among men who have sex with men in highly stigmatised environments: A qualitative study from Jakarta, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Global policies emphasise the need for tailored interventions to reduce the harms of sexualised drug use (SDU) among men who have sex with men (MSM), including taking account of local risk environments and the influence of social norms, drug and sexual minority stigma, and cultural and political conditions. To help guide the production of local SDU harm reduction interventions, this study aimed to explore the social and structural conditions that shape the practice of, and response to, SDU by MSM in Jakarta, Indonesia. METHODS: Informed by an interactionism theoretical perspective

Social Stressors and Health Among Older Transgender and Gender Diverse Veterans.

Purpose: Health disparities in transgender and gender diverse (TGD) veterans compared with cisgender veterans have been documented. However, there is a paucity of literature focused on older TGD veterans. We assessed health conditions and social stressors in older TGD veterans compared with matched cisgender veterans. Methods: Using gender identity disorder diagnosis codes, we identified 1244 TGD veterans (65+ years of age) receiving care in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) from 2006 to 2018. These TGD veterans were then matched to 3732 cisgender veterans based on age, VHA site, and da

Disability and dignity-enabling home environments.

In Canada where long-term care is primarily oriented to elderly persons and affordable accessible housing is limited, younger disabled adults may be living in circumstances that do not meet their health needs and contribute to their social exclusion. The purpose of this study was to undertake an ethical analysis of what constitute an 'adequate' home environment for adults with significant mobility disabilities. An integrated design was used that combined qualitative interviews with normative ethical analysis in an iterative process. Twenty interviews with 19 participants were conducted in Onta

Multi-dimensional social frailty index for predicting disability and mortality in community-dwelling older adults: JAGES cohort.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We explored the association between a constructed multi-dimensional social frailty index and incidence of disability and all-cause mortality among community-dwelling older adults, examining its prognostic validity. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We obtained data from the 2016 Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES), surveying community-dwelling individuals aged ≥65 years, not certified as requiring long-term care, at baseline. The analytical sample comprised 73,472 participants (mean age, 73.7 years; 53.4% women) from 18 municipalities across 10 prefectures in J

Social Prescribing and the Welfare State.

Current public policy does not create the conditions people need to be healthy. In this context, social prescribing, which identifies unmet needs in clinical care and links individuals to community-based resources that help meet those needs, can help mitigate the health consequences of poor public policy. This is important, and social prescribing programs should be expanded. However, social prescribing does not fundamentally reconfigure the power relations and distributive institutions that create the problems in the first place. On the other hand, the welfare state, by publicly providing nece

Estrogen and oxytocin receptors interplay in the medial amygdala to rapidly facilitate social recognition.

The estrogen, 17β-estradiol (E2), rapidly facilitates social recognition in various regions of the social brain network. The medial amygdala (MeA) is heavily involved in the processing of social cues and expresses the three main estrogen receptors (ER): ERα, ERβ, and G Protein-Coupled ER (GPER). All ERs, as well as oxytocin and its receptor (OTR) in the MeA are crucial for social recognition in female mice, suggesting an interplay between ERs and OTR in the rapid facilitation of this social behavior. Here, we demonstrate an interplay between E2 and the three ERs (ERα, ERβ, GPER) with OTR in th

Constitutive depletion of brain serotonin differentially affects rats' social and cognitive abilities.

Central serotonin appears a promising transdiagnostic marker of psychiatric disorders and a modulator of some of their key behavioral symptoms. In adult male Tph2 -/- rats, constitutively lacking central serotonin, we tested individual's cognitive, social and non-social abilities and characterized group's social organization under classical and ethological testing conditions. Using unsupervised machine learning, we identified the functions most dependent on serotonin. Although serotonin depletion did not affect cognitive performances in classical testing, in the home-cage it induced compulsive

Implications of Social and Material Deprivation for Changes in Health of Older People.

Objective: We use the panel structure of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) data for 14 countries to examine the implications of material and social deprivation for health deterioration in old age and mortality. Method: To minimize the potential endogeneity bias, we examine the relationship between deprivation and changes in health rather than levels of health. We include a substantial set of fixed "initial conditions," and extend the controls with health measures, as observed at the initial period. Results: The results of the probit regression suggest a strong and s

Mentalizing from self and friend perspectives: Relations between inter-brain neural similarity, affective similarity and social anxiety symptoms.

Social interactions are dynamic and complex, relying on tracking variation in your own and your partner's affective and mental states. Being "in-sync" neurally and building a shared consensus can mark successful social interactions. In addition, social anxiety can impact social experiences. We used a novel, naturalistic paradigm to investigate relations between inter-brain neural similarity within mentalizing regions, affective similarity, and social anxiety symptoms. Undergraduate student friend pairs (N = 34, 85% White, 65% Women) engaged in a social interaction while videos captured from th

Unequal ageing: the quality of life of senior citizens in the EU before and after COVID-19. A multidimensional approach.

INTRODUCTION: The ageing population presents a significant demographic and socio-economic challenge for the European Union (EU). Declining fertility rates, coupled with increasing life expectancy, have led to a growing proportion of older individuals within the population, raising concerns about their quality of life. This study aims to assess the quality of life for seniors across EU countries in the years 2015, 2019, and 2022, with a particular focus on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The research seeks to answer the following question: How has the quality of life among seniors in the E

Virtual food exposure with positive mood induction or social support to reduce food anxiety in anorexia nervosa: A feasibility study.

OBJECTIVE: Aversive emotions toward food and the consequences of eating are at the core of anorexia nervosa. Exposure therapy is effective to reduce anxiety and avoidance toward feared stimuli. Based on the inhibitory learning framework, this study examined the feasibility to induce social support or positive mood to enhance the impact of a single session virtual food exposure on food-related anxiety in anorexia nervosa. METHOD: One hundred and forty-five patients were randomized to: (1) virtual food exposure (i.e., baseline condition), (2) virtual food exposure plus positive mood induction (

The impact of panic expectancy and social demand on agoraphobic avoidance.

The relationship between panic expectancy, social demand and agoraphobic avoidance was investigated in a group of 48 panic disorder subjects. Subjects were observed surreptitiously while completing a naturalistic behavioral avoidance task (BAT) involving either a high or low social challenge task. Subjects in the high social challenge task avoided more compared to subjects in the low social challenge task. Prediction of panic made before entering the situation and type of social challenge condition (high/low) were the only variables that accounted for significant amounts of unique variance in
