The present study examined the effect of trait anxiety on voluntary orienting and inhibitory control responses triggered by averted gaze in emotional faces (fearful, happy, and neutral) in a mixed pro- and anti-saccade task. High- and low-anxious groups did not differ in terms of error rates, but the results showed that high-anxious individuals were slower to initiate a saccade in response to eye-gaze cues for fearful faces, irrespective of whether a pro- or anti-saccade was required. The present results support the Attentional Control Theory (ACT), which proposes that anxiety impairs processi

Vocalizations provide a means of communication with high fidelity and information rate for many species. Diencephalon and brainstem neural circuits have been shown to control mouse vocal production; however, the role of cortical circuits in this process is debatable. Using electrical and optogenetic stimulation, we identified a cortical region in the anterior cingulate cortex in which stimulation elicits ultrasonic vocalizations. Moreover, fiber photometry showed an increase in Ca2+ dynamics preceding vocal initiation, whereas optogenetic suppression in this cortical area caused mice to emit f

BACKGROUND: Researchers have long been interested in identifying objective markers for problem drinking susceptibility informed by the environments in which individuals drink. However, little is known of objective cognitive-behavioral indices relevant to the social contexts in which alcohol is typically consumed. Combining group-based alcohol administration, eye-tracking technology, and longitudinal follow-up over a 2-year span, the current study examined the role of social attention in predicting patterns of problem drinking over time.
METHODS: Young heavy drinkers (N = 246) were randomly as

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition in children can be a consequence of unfavourable socioeconomic conditions. However, some families maintain adequate nutritional status in their children despite living in poverty. The aim of this study was to ascertain whether family-related factors are determinants of stunting in young Mexican children living in extreme poverty, and whether these factors differ between rural or urban contexts.
METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in one rural and one urban extreme poverty level areas in Mexico. Cases comprised stunted children aged between 6 and 23 months. Con

Teenagers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and age-matched controls participated in a dynamic facial affect recognition task within a virtual reality (VR) environment. Participants identified the emotion of a facial expression displayed at varied levels of intensity by a computer generated avatar. The system assessed performance (i.e., accuracy, confidence ratings, response latency, and stimulus discrimination) as well as how participants used their gaze to process facial information using an eye tracker. Participants in both groups were similarly accurate at basic facial affect recognition

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer and its treatment-related adverse effects are harmful to physical, psychological, and social functioning, leading to health-related quality of life (HRQoL) impairment in patients. Many programs have been used with this population for HRQoL improvement; however, few studies have considered the physical, psychological, and social health domains comprehensively, and few have constructed multimodal standard nursing interventions based on specific theories. The purpose of this trial is to examine the effect of a health belief model (HBM)-based multimodal standard nursing p

INTRODUCTION: Social isolation may have adverse effects on incidence and severity of cognitive impairment including subjective cognitive decline (SCD). An increase of environmental variety and social interactions may furthermore reduce progression from SCD to dementia. Research evaluating respective interventions is limited, particularly as regards studies comparing different degrees of social engagement interventions. We thus developed a clinical trial protocol to determine the efficacy of social interventions with different intensities in protecting cognitive function and white matter integr

Accumulating neuroimaging evidence suggests that abnormal functional connectivity of the default mode network (DMN) contributes to the social-cognitive deficits of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Although most previous studies relied on conventional functional connectivity methods, which assume that connectivity patterns remain constant over time, understanding the temporal dynamics of functional connectivity during rest may provide new insights into the dysfunction of the DMN in ASD. In this work, dynamic functional connectivity analysis based on sliding time window correlation was applied to

BACKGROUND: Expectations have an important impact on emotion-pain interactions. Previous studies have primarily focused on the influence of pain-related expectations on perceived pain intensity. However, expectations regarding negative-valence information more broadly may impact perception beyond pain and be altered when pain becomes chronic. The current study aimed to investigate whether patients with chronic pain exhibit alterations in social-emotional expectations beyond pain perception.
METHODS: Thirty-five adults with chronic pain, recruited at the Pain Unit of Hospital del Mar in Barcel

BACKGROUND: Acute stress plays a key role in mental health, and there is a pressing need for accessible, brain-based interventions that strengthen stress regulation by directly targeting the underlying brain mechanisms. We therefore developed a real-time functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)-informed neurofeedback training targeting a prefrontal region involved in cognitive emotion regulation (left lateral prefrontal cortex, PFC) and evaluated its potential to enhance stress regulation using the socially evaluated cold pressor test, an acute stress paradigm that combines physical and s

BACKGROUND: Asthma-related deaths, hospitalizations, and ED visits are more numerous among low-income communities, yet management guidelines overlook this group. Navigators, typically community members trained as health educators and advocates, may improve access to care and asthma outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: In a randomized controlled trial, we study whether Navigators who identify barriers to health-related social needs (at home or with clinical management) lead to improved health in adults with asthma living in low-income areas.
METHODS: Over 18 months patients were followed for patient-reported

Addictive drug exposure is associated with impairments in various cognitive domains. Murine models of drug-induced cognitive impairment have helped to inform research on interventions to attenuate such cognitive diminishment; however, while differences between the drug-induced cognitive impairments exhibited by C57BL/6J and BALB/cJ mice have been observed, they remain unclear. This study measured differences in cognitive behavior performance on the object recognition test (ORT) and social recognition test (SRT) and serum levels of corticosterone (CORT) between C57BL/6J and BALB/cJ mice after 1

Excluding communities in planning and implementing research maximizes internal risks that are otherwise visible and avoidable when there is adequate community consultation. Communities might not meaningfully use research results if majority of the researched people have minimal or no participation in information generation and dissemination. However, effective participation of researched communities in research is key to transferring knowledge to action. Using a qualitative approach, the study identified barriers to, and relevant strategies for improving health research uptake, particularly fo

Use/abuse of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) has in recent years become a topic of great interest. Current discussion addresses whether it must be considered addictive behaviour and if it is a problem that primarily affects adolescents and youth. This study aims to understand the problems that affect people of all ages in controlling the use of these ICTs and whether they are related to mental health problems, stress and difficulties in executive control of behaviour. A survey was administered through social networks and email, using the MULTICAGE-ICT, a questionnaire that ex

Parents and paediatric neurologists need information on the long-term social prognosis of children with cerebral palsy (CP). No large population-based study has been performed on this topic. On 31 December 1999, to find predictors in childhood of subsequent education and employment, 819 participants with CP born between 1965 and 1978 (471 males; mean age 28y 10 mo, SD 4y, range 21 to 35y) in the Danish Cerebral Palsy Registry were compared with 4406 controls without CP born between 1965 and 1978 (2546 males; mean age 28y 10 mo, SD 4y, range 21 to 35y). Diagnostic subtypes of the 819 participan

This study examined the mediating role of motor competence in the association between physical activity (PA) and quality of life (QoL) and the moderating role of age in the indirect relationship between PA and QoL in children with ADHD. Eighty-six children aged 6-12 years old (M age = 8.45, SD = 1.40, 17.4% girls) with the diagnosis of ADHD were recruited in this study. Participants wore a wGT3X-BT accelerometer on their wrist for seven consecutive days to measure PA. Motor competence was measured by the Test of Gross Motor Development-Third Edition (TGMD-3). Quality of life (QoL) was assessed

OBJECTIVE: This study was to explore the main influencing factors of attempted suicide and establish an early warning model, so as to put forward prevention strategies for attempted suicide.
METHOD: Data came from a large-scale case-control epidemiological survey. A sample of 659 serious suicide attempters was randomly recruited from 13 rural counties in China. Each case was matched by a community control for gender, age, and residence location. Face to face interviews were conducted for all the cases and controls with the same structured questionnaire. Univariate logistic regression was appl

BACKGROUND: As countries progress from control of onchocerciasis as a public health problem to elimination of parasite transmission, more evidence on vector-related activities and transmission assessments is needed to inform WHO guidelines and country strategies to achieve the targets of the 2030 Neglected Tropical Disease Roadmap. For vector-borne diseases, entomology plays a critical role in the elimination and verification of transmission based on vector infectivity. The vector control-based Onchocerciasis Control Programme (OCP) in West Africa, 1974-2002, had accumulated relevant experienc
