Linking subjective social class perception to psychological well-being: The mediating pathway of offline gatherings and the moderating influence of internet use.

Understanding the psychological mechanisms linking subjective social class perception (SSCP) to well-being is critically important in the cu … triggering upward social comparisons that alter how individuals cognitively appraise their offline social interactions. These findings highlight the need to understand how digital media modulate the cognitive and social pathways from social perception to well-being.

Bracing for the worst, but behaving the best: social anxiety, hostility, and behavioral aggression.

Social anxiety is marked by viewing social interactions as competitive, hypervigilance to signs of social threat, and avoidance of interactions that may result in social rejection. Therefore, social anxiety should relate to: (1) greater hostile feelings toward others, (2) heightened perceptions of hostility in others, and (3) relatively low levels of violence and aggression. To date, however, little is known about these relationships. In four independent non-clinical samples (total N=2643), we examined relationships between social anxiety, hostility, and aggression using a range of measures th…

A battery of olfactory-based screens for phenotyping the social and sexual behaviors of mice.

We provide a battery of screens that reflect the social and sexual behavior displayed by both captive and feral mice. Some screens focus on measuring aspects of chemical communication, providing information about whether or not mice will interact and if they do so, predict the nature of the interaction. Other screens measure direct interactions between target mice and same- and opposite-sex conspecifics, providing an indication of the social status and sexual responsiveness, respectively, of target mice. The battery of screens yields a high-throughput bioassay of a mouse's relative social stat

"Not a care home but a political home": How feminist activism influences women's aging.

A central mantra of aging centers on staying socially engaged - a prescription supported by numerous studies reporting how social engagement … r studies of other women-centered organizations, we found evidence that involvement in OFN provided social interaction, as well as physical and cognitive activity, that can enrich well-being in later life. Our analyses, however, revealed that its impact extended beyond social connection: It fostered a sense of purpose through shared political commitments and reframe …

Reunion with a peer partner reduces PVN oxytocin neuron immunoreactivity in socially selective voles.

Friendships-i.e. selective peer relationships-are an important aspect of human behavior, but are rare in rodent species. Meadow voles are seasonally social rodents that form non-reproductive social groups in winter/short day lengths that are selective in nature. Across rodents, oxytocin neurons in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus are typically active during socially salient events, including interaction with novel individuals as well as social separation. To assess whether familiar and novel peer interactions produce different patterns of immunolabeling in a species that f

Inhibition of Nitric Oxide Synthesis Prevents the Effects of Intermittent Social Defeat on Cocaine-Induced Conditioned Place Preference in Male Mice.

We have previously observed that mice exposed to social defeat stress are more sensitive to cocaine in the conditioned place preference (CPP … or 12.5 mg/kg). After the last episode of defeat, mice were tested in the elevated plus maze (EPM), social interaction, object recognition and tail suspension tests. Three weeks later, mice were conditioned with cocaine (1 mg/kg). Stressed mice, irrespective of the treatment received, showed anxiety in the EPM, presented a deficit of social interaction and spent les …

Frontal operculum temporal difference signals and social motor response learning.

Substantial experimental evidence supports the theory that the dopaminergic system codes a phasic (short duration) signal predicting the delivery of primary reinforcers, such as water when thirsty, during Pavlovian learning. This signal is described by the temporal difference (TD) model. Recently, it has been suggested that the human dopaminergic system also codes more complex cognitive goal states, including those required for human social interaction. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with 18 healthy subjects, we tested the hypothesis that TD signals would be present during …

Subtyping social anxiety disorder in developed and developing countries.

BACKGROUND: Although social anxiety disorder (SAD) is classified in the fourth edition of The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV) into generalized and non-generalized subtypes, community surveys in Western countries find no evidence of disjunctions in the dose-response relationship between number of social fears and outcomes to support this distinction. We aimed to determine whether this holds across a broader set of developed and developing countries, and whether subtyping according to number of performance versus interactional fears would be more useful. METHODS: The World Health Org

The Role of Social Deficits in the Link Between Social Gambling Motives and Problem Gambling.

In comparison to other motives for gambling, social motives (e.g., gambling for social interaction) are often suggested to be the least problematic and, in some cases, even a protective factor for problem gambling. This view is consistent with historical distinctions between 'social' versus 'problem' gambling. As a result, little research has attempted to identify the circumstances in which social motives are more likely to be associated with risk of problems. Consistent with self-determination theory, the present study examined whether the relationship between social motives and problem gambl…

Social Homeostasis and Psychoactive Drugs: What Can We Learn From Opioid and Amphetamine Drug Challenge Studies in Humans?

Social disequilibrium, or disrupted social homeostasis, underlies many behavioral disorders, including problematic drug use. One way to study the relationship between drug use and social homeostasis is to determine whether single doses of psychoactive drugs relieve some of the discomfort of social isolation and promote social connection. In this narrative review, we discuss challenges and opportunities in studying the relationship between psychoactive drugs and social homeostasis. Using the examples of opioids and amphetamines, we discuss the evidence that drugs alleviate dysphoria related to

From digital companionship to capability building: reframing conversational artificial intelligence and older adults' psychological wellbeing in active aging.

The rapid diffusion of conversational artificial intelligence (AI) has reshaped the landscape of digital interaction in later life, with gro … proach. It argues that the primary value of conversational AI lies not in its ability to substitute social interaction, but in its potential to expand older adults' cognitive, emotional, social, and digital capabilities. Building on this argument, this paper develops an AI-Augmented Active Aging Framework that explains how conversational AI affordances, responsivene …

Syndemic conditions and quality of life in the PISCIS Cohort of people living with HIV in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PLWH) face structural and psychosocial factors that affect health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We aimed to evaluate how syndemic conditions affected HRQoL in PLWH. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 861 PLWH, to determine whether syndemic conditions (monthly income; sexual satisfaction; depressive symptoms; social role satisfaction; social isolation; cognitive function; nicotine dependence; perception of stigma) have an effect on HRQoL. A linear regression model and measures of Additive Interaction (AI) were used to determine the effe

The Modifying Role of Cortisol in the Sex-Specific Associations of Social Jetlag with Neurobehavioral Problems Among Adolescents: The Shanghai Adolescent Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Social-jetlag is linked to adverse mental health outcomes, though longitudinal evidence in adolescents remains insufficient. The neuroendocrine mechanism underlying this association, particularly the modifying role of cortisol and sex difference, remains uncharacterized. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data were collected from the Shanghai Adolescent Cohort Study (2017-2021), involving 609 students investigated from grade 6 to 9. Levels of neurobehavioral symptoms were evaluated using the Youth Self-Report (YSR). Social-jetlag was assessed using structured questionnaire. Cortisol levels in fin

Effect of age and severity of cognitive dysfunction on spontaneous activity in pet dogs - part 2: social responsiveness.

Changes in social interactions with owners and other dogs are frequently observed in dogs with cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS). The aim of this work was to assess the effect of age and severity of CDS on social responsiveness. This is the second part of a 2-part report on spontaneous activity in pet dogs. A human interaction test and a mirror test were administered at baseline and 6 months later to assess social responses to humans and conspecifics, respectively, to four groups of privately-owned dogs: young (n=9), middle-aged (n=9), cognitively unimpaired aged (n=31), and cognitively imp…
