How does the brain navigate knowledge of social relations? Testing for shared neural mechanisms for shifting attention in space and social knowledge.

How does the human brain support reasoning about social relations (e.g., social status, friendships)? Converging theories suggest that navigating knowledge of social relations may co-opt neural circuitry with evolutionarily older functions (e.g., shifting attention in space). Here, we analyzed multivoxel response patterns of fMRI data to examine the neural mechanisms for shifting attention in knowledge of a social hierarchy. The "directions" in which participants mentally navigated social knowledge were encoded in multivoxel patterns in superior parietal cortex, which also encoded directions o…

Multidimensional Social Isolation and All-Cause Mortality Among Middle-Aged and Older Adults in China: Gender and Rural-Urban Differences.

This study examines whether multidimensional social isolation is associated with all-cause mortality and explores whether these associations vary by gender and rural-urban residence in China. Using nationally representative longitudinal data from 12,686 adults aged 45 and older in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011-2020), we estimated Cox proportional hazards models examining social isolation as structural disconnectedness across five domains: partnership status, contact with parents, contact with children, contact with friends, and social participation. Social isolation

Hearing Aids Reduce Daily-Life Fatigue and Increase Social Activity: A Longitudinal Study.

People with hearing loss experience fatigue, and it is unknown whether this is alleviated by treatment with hearing aids. The objective of this study was to address this issue and to investigate the possible concomitant effect of hearing-aid fitting on activity levels. An intervention group (n = 53) who were due to be fitted with their first-ever hearing aid(s) and a control group (n = 53) who had hearing loss but no change in hearing aid status-completed a battery of self-report outcome measures four times: once before fitting, and at 2 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months post fitting. Social group disparities in the incidence and prognosis of oesophageal cancer.

There are substantial disparities in the incidence and prognosis of oesophageal cancer across social population groups, including sex, race/ethnicity, geographical location and socio-economic status. Both squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus are more common in men than in women, but the male predominance in adenocarcinoma is stronger and less well understood. The varying incidence and prognosis of oesophageal cancer across racial/ethnic groups show distinct patterns by histological type. Individuals residing in rural areas have a higher incidence and worse prognosis tha

Associations influencing quality of life in caregivers of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a stress-process model approach.

BACKGROUND: Caring for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) involves demands that reduce caregivers' quality of life. Although caregiver burden and perceived social support was conceptualized as an independent correlate of quality of life rather than a factor operating primarily through caregiver burden. This study examined these associations within a stress-process framework in which perceived social support was conceptualized as an independent correlate rather than a buffering factor. METHODS: This cross-sectional analytical study included 118 informal caregivers of patients wi

Local social environmental factors are associated with household food insecurity in a longitudinal study of children.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity is a significant public health problem in North America and elsewhere. The prevalence of food insecurity varies by country of residence; within countries, it is strongly associated with household socioeconomic status, but the local environment may also play an important role. In this study, we analyzed secondary data from a population-based survey conducted in Québec, Canada, to determine if five local environmental factors: material and social deprivation, social cohesion, disorder, and living location were associated with changes in household food insecurity over

Social support as a predictor of participation in cardiac rehabilitation after coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

PURPOSE: Cardiac rehabilitation promotes recovery and enhances quality of life after a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), but participation in such rehabilitation is low. The role of social support in promoting participation has been suggested by prior studies, but is not clearly defined. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of social support as an independent predictor of participation in cardiac rehabilitation. METHODS: This study examined 944 patients who underwent first isolated CABG between May 1999 and February 2001, then were followed for 6 months after surgery. Soci

Gender disparities in depression severity and coping among people living with HIV/AIDS in Kolkata, India.

People living with HIV/AIDS (PLH) experience high rates of depression and related psychosocial risk factors that vary by gender. This study examines gender differences in depression severity among antiretroviral therapy (ART) patients (n = 362) from a large government ART clinic in Kolkata, India. Hypotheses for multiple linear regression models were guided by an integrated gendered stress process model focusing on variables reflecting social status (age, partner status), stressors (stigma), and resources (income, social support). Depressive symptoms were assessed with the Hospital Anxiety and…

Factors affecting the physical and mental health of older adults in China: The importance of marital status, child proximity, and gender.

Evidence is accumulating about the association between strong family ties and the emotional and physical welfare of older adults, and researchers have identified negative consequences of being unmarried, being childless, and/or living alone. These associations have been recognized in multiple contexts, including in Asia where living with a spouse and/or grown children has been shown in some studies to improve elderly well-being. Social support, especially family support, is expected to continue to be important where populations are aging and social safety nets are weak. Using longitudinal data

Apathy and Functional Status in Early-Stage Huntington's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Apathy is common in Huntington's disease (HD) and difficult to treat. Multiple recent calls have been made to increase understanding of apathy across the spectrum of HD severity. Functional status is an important outcome in HD trials; however, no consensus currently exists regarding the impact of apathy on functional status in HD. The authors aimed to identify correlates of apathy and effects on functional status in a primarily early-stage HD sample. METHODS: This study included secondary analyses of data from a study of neuropsychiatric symptoms in a clinical HD sample. Spearman c

Person and Environment Factors Supporting Self-Care Performance and Social Participation After Mild Stroke.

Mild stroke survivors seldom receive occupational therapy services as their deficits are assumed to be minor enough to not affect their daily occupations. Yet many mild stroke survivors report deficits in self-care performance and social participation. This study investigates person and environment factors influencing self-care performance and social participation among mild stroke survivors, using the Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP) model. A retrospective cohort analysis of 736 mild stroke survivors was conducted using electronic health records. Person factors included demogr
