Social anxiety and fear of negative evaluation: construct validity of the BFNE-II.

The Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale [BFNE; Leary, M. R. (1983). A brief version of the Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale. Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 9, 371-375] is a self-report measure designed to assess fear of negative evaluation, a characteristic feature of social anxiety disorders [Rapee, R. M., & Heimberg, R. G. (1997). A cognitive-behavioral model of anxiety in social phobia. Behaviour Research and Therapy, 35, 741-756]. Recent psychometric assessments have suggested that a 2-factor model is most appropriate, with the first factor comprising the straightforwardl

Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents: factorial invariance and latent mean differences across gender and age in Spanish adolescents.

Little is known about the factorial invariance across gender and age for self-report measures of social anxiety in adolescence. This study examined the factorial invariance and latent mean differences of the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A) across gender and age groups in 1570 Spanish adolescents (54% girls), ranging in age from 14 to 17 years. Equality of factor structures was compared using multi-group confirmatory factor analyses. Measurement invariance for the correlated three-factor model of the SAS-A was found across gender and age samples. Analyses of latent mean differences

Longitudinal test of a multiple domain model of adolescent condom use.

A comprehensive multiple domain model (MDM) to understand condom use in adolescents was proposed and tested using structural equation modeling of data at three time points. The proposed model integrates social psychological theory, demographic and personality factors, social environment, and situational/contextual variables. Adolescents who were sexually active at time 2 (6 months after baseline) and time 3 (1 year after time 2) and completed surveys at all three time points were included in the analyses (N = 511). An iterative process of model testing resulted in a structural equation model t

Stigmas of congenital Zika syndrome: family perspectives.

This article uses a socio-anthropological framework to explore the stigmas around interactions with children born with congenital Zika syndrome caused by the Zika virus epidemic in two Brazilian municipalities. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents and other relatives. We reflected on the search for meaning when having a baby with unexpected body marks, the moral suffering, the societal ableism, the burden of care, and the need for support networks. We concluded that public policies, especially social policies (health, education, and social assistance), are essential for compe

Associations of single parenting and sociodemographic factors with mental health among young adults.

BACKGROUND: The transition to adulthood is a critical period for mental health, yet limited evidence exists on how family structure and sociodemographic contexts are associated with depressive symptoms and psychological distress. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the Spatial Social Networks and Environmental Exposure (SSNE) Project to examine associations between single parenting, sociodemographic characteristics, and mental health outcomes among 2446 young adults in the United States. Mental health was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the Depress

Body proportions for the facilitation of walking, running and flying: the case of partridges.

BACKGROUND: Predation is one of the most important natural selection forces. Prey species can optimize feeding behavior and escape from predators based on mobility conditioned by body proportions. With age, mobility capacity increases and individuals are more efficient in finding resources and safety (e.g., food and refuge). Birds' mobility is driven by the dimensions, of the head and torso, as well as the extremities and flight feathers. To assess the relationship between body traits and to understand how body proportions are organized in wild Red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa), we used b

Community Structure of a Mental Health Internet Support Group: Modularity in User Thread Participation.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the community structure of mental health Internet support groups, quantitatively. A greater understanding of the factors, which lead to user interaction, is needed to explain the design information of these services and future research concerning their utility. OBJECTIVE: A study was conducted to determine the characteristics of users associated with the subgroup community structure of an Internet support group for mental health issues. METHODS: A social network analysis of the Internet support group BlueBoard (blueboard.anu.edu.au) was performed to determin

Navigating crisis: a qualitative exploration of medical social workers' responses to ethical issues during COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Medical social workers' (MedSWs) roles and responsibilities expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic. They experienced larger caseloads, restrictive protocols, new policies, and work outside of their professional scope, despite limited access to resources, support, or hazard compensation. As a result, MedSWs faced complex ethical situations, which they had to address in accordance with the profession's guiding principles. METHODS: We conducted qualitative semi-structured interviews with 54 MedSWs about their professional experiences during the pandemic and used the National Associati

"I wasn't really welcome in that community": A qualitative study of place, intersectional stigma, and health among Black sexual minoritized men in Baltimore.

Social and structural determinants of health are often spatially bound, limiting access to resources that influence health. Where people go and their interactions shape and are shaped by intersectional stigma, with profound potential impacts on health. Yet, further research is needed to understand how place intersects with intersectional stigma to affect people's daily lives and health. To inform place-based HIV prevention and care interventions in Baltimore, we conducted 20 in-depth interviews with Black sexual minoritized men. Interviews explored interrelationships between place, social rela

Association of intermediate health determinants with gestational diabetes self-care: a structural equation modeling approach.

INTRODUCTION: Gestational diabetes is a common problem among pregnant women that can lead to many complications for the mothers and their fetuses. Gestational diabetes self-care can reduce the consequences and outcomes of this disease. Some of the factors related to self-care of gestational diabetes are quality of life, social support, and domestic violence. This study aims to investigate the relationship between quality of life, perceived social support, and domestic violence with gestational diabetes self-care using structural equation modeling. METHOD: This cross-sectional study was conduct

Differences in attentional bias between self-related information and external cues from others in individuals with social anxiety: An event-related potential study.

Individuals with high social anxiety show a more considerable attentional bias toward self-relevant information and outwardly threatening stimuli than do those with low social anxiety. Some studies have investigated the attentional bias between self-relevant information and external social cues in people with high social anxiety but have not reached consistent conclusions. This study used a modified dot-probe task and collected temporal and electroencephalogram responses to three self-other face pairs among 15 people with high social anxiety and 20 people with low social anxiety. Both groups r

Structural Racism and Oral Health Inequities of Black vs. non-Hispanic White Adults in the U.S.

Structural racism negatively affects the health of Black populations in the U.S. Black populations experience a higher burden of oral diseases, such as tooth decay, periodontal disease, and oral and pharyngeal cancers than other racial groups experience. Oral health literature refers to racial inequities in the context of social disadvantage. However, structural racism perpetuates those contributory social disadvantages, such as inadequate access to affordable housing, education, and employment. In addition, in states where nearly 50% of U.S. Black populations reside, there is an inequitable d

Looking through the cracks: vulnerabilities and deprivation in the Brazilian open drug scenes.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine use is increasing worldwide, and Brazil, located along major transatlantic trafficking routes, has experienced widespread availability of low-cost crack, which circulates predominantly in open drug scenes (ODS). ODS are public spaces where drug use, purchase, sale, and social interaction converge. While national surveys have identified these settings as central to crack use, their social, structural, and spatial characteristics remain poorly understood. This study offers a nationwide description of Brazilian ODS, providing empirical evidence that can inform targeted, contex

Scoping 'sex' and 'gender' in rehabilitation: (mis)representations and effects.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have highlighted a large-scale global unmet need for rehabilitation. While sex and gender have been shown to interact with each other and with other social and structural factors to influence health and wellbeing, less is known about how sex and gender shape rehabilitation participation and outcomes within health systems. METHODS: Using an intersectional approach, we examine literature that explores the relationship between sex and/or gender and rehabilitation access, use, adherence, outcomes, and caregiving. Following a comprehensive search, 65 documents met the inclu

Gene-environment interaction: New insights into perceived parenting and social anxiety among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety symptoms (SAS) are among the most common mental health problems during adolescence, and it has been shown that parenting influences the adolescent's level of social anxiety. In addition, it is now widely assumed that most mental health problems, including social anxiety, originate from a complex interplay between genes and environment. However, to date, gene-environment (G × E) interactions studies in the field of social anxiety remain limited. In this study, we have examined how 274 genes involved in different neurotransmission pathways interact with five aspects of

"Housing Is Health Care": Treating Homelessness in Safety-net Hospitals.

As medicine integrates social and structural determinants into health care, some health workers redefine housing as medical treatment. This article discusses how health workers in two U.S. urban safety-net hospitals worked with patients without stable housing. We observed ethnographically how health workers helped patients seek housing in a sharply stratified housing economy. Analyzing in-depth interviews and observations, we show how health workers: (1) understood housing as health care and navigated limits of individual care in a structurally produced housing crisis; and (2) developed and en

Romantic relationships: do socially anxious individuals benefit?

Psychological health and interpersonal functioning mutually influence each other. Social anxiety has a pervasive effect on interpersonal functioning, resulting in smaller social networks, increased likelihood of being single or divorced, and less intimacy in relationships. However, little is known about how relationships affect socially anxious individuals in return. We utilized a structured interview to assess how romantic relationships were perceived as influencing three aspects of psychological health (well-being, social anxiety and comfort in social situations) and whether these patterns d
